    A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the nationalQuick stage, the Facts Manhattanville and College Athletic Contents Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2011-12 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport in 2012-13, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2011-12 and two Valiant squads (men’s soccer and men’s golf) made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the third straight title and seventh in 11 seasons for men’s golf. In addition, the men’s hockey, men’s golf and women’s hockey teams all received national rankings over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2011-12 as well, led by All-America selections Eros Olazabal (men’s soccer) and Dan Fiorito (baseball). Manhattanville also boasted three Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 47 combined All-Conference honorees. In recent years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well.

We are excited about our format because it is designed to provide a Development Opportunity at every stage of the Assessment. The first two phases will be a Skills Assessment of each player/goaltender to ensure the teams are balanced. Phase 3 will be a combination of Games and Practices. The program offered (Combine) is more than just a week-end of scrimmages. The Combine will provide the opportunity for each player to Learn, Develop, and interact with the actual Newmarket Staff. Therefore providing multiple development opportunities to display skills and ultimately have the chance to earn a roster spot to play for the Newmarket Hurricanes. While last Tuesday's deadline came and went with other York Region teams bolstering their rosters for the postseason, Aurora has resigned to miss the playoffs for the first time in six seasons by acquiring cash and some potential for the future. The resulting team of call-ups and younger players fell to both the North York Rangers and Oakville Blades over the weekend, with the Tigers still searching for their first win of the New Year. With both the Rangers and Blades destined for the playoffs with seeding implications on the line, the Rangers first shutout the Tigers at the Aurora Community Centre by a score of 4 ? 0. Forcing goaltender Brayden Lachance to face 54 shots in the game, North York's Ture Linden continued his torrid scoring pace by beating Lachance three times, finishing a natural hat trick just under a minute into the third period. Noah Robinson rounded out the scoring just two minutes later, while Aurora managed just sixteen shots in total on the North York net. The Blades, tops in the OJHL's South division and the second highest scoring team in the conference, disposed of the Tigers the following day 5 ? 2 at the ACC. Oakville scored twice on the powerplay, with the Tigers combining for 31 penalty minutes in the game.

The Junior A hockey club has hired former Newfoundland Growlers defenceman Robert Powers, of the East Coast Hockey League, as the team's new assistant coach this past week. Head coach Jim Wells Jr. says the local team was looking to bolster defence. ?Because we knew the strength of our current staff, I was looking for somebody who had played the position of defence,? he says. ?I was looking for somebody who was university educated and had recently played at the university, NCAA level. I was looking for somebody who was also younger.? The 25-year-old Powers has spent the past two years in the ECHL. Previously, the Ajax native attended Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, playing at the NCAA level. Powers, also brings quite the Ontario Junior Hockey League resume to the table. He spent three years in the OJHL with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Stouffville Spirit and the Toronto Patriots, winning the RBC Cup and the Dudley Hewitt Cup with the Patriots in 2013-2014. Team owner Jim Thomson says he believes Wells has filled a necessary void within the organization that has been vacant since he purchased the club. ?In the five years I've had the team, I've never had a guy that actually played pro defence to teach the defenceman,? says Thomson.
