The referee tosses a coin and the team that wins the toss, decides whether to attack or defend in the first ADG contest. The teams receive an additional substitution. The referee meets separately with the teams and records their five attackers. The attacker receives the ball at the ADG mark, which is 32 yards from the goal line. Having seen the attacker, the opposition field their defender. eTh defender and goalkeeper must be at least 10 yards from the ball until it is in play. Half the field is in play. The attacker kicks off and has 20 seconds to try and score a goal. The contest will end if any of the following occur: • A goal is scored • The ball goes out of play • The goalkeeper controls the ball with their hands inside the penalty area • The 20 seconds elapses • The attacker commits a foul If the defender or goalkeeper commits a foul, the attacker is awarded a penalty kick, and the 20 second time period is disregarded for the remainder of that contest. -
COMPETITIVE BALANCE in VEIKKAUSLIIGA and LIIGA Roope
COMPETITIVE BALANCE IN VEIKKAUSLIIGA AND LIIGA Roope Töllikkö Master’s Thesis Sport and Exercise Promotion Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences University of Jyväskylä 2020 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences TÖLLIKKÖ, ROOPE: Competitive balance in Veikkausliiga and Liiga ABSTRACT Master’s Thesis, 77 pages Social Sciences of Sport 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since the nominal paper by Simon Rottenberg in 1956, in which he discussed the notion of competitive balance for the first time, the theory has been a backbone in team sport economics. However, recent empirical evidence shows a clear trend of decrease in the levels of competitive balance across different leagues and sports around the world. A clear gap in the evidence exists in the Finnish sporting context and therefore this thesis aims to determine the current levels of competitive balance in Veikkausliiga and Liiga and how these levels have evolved throughout the last 30 years (1990-2019). The theoretical framework of this thesis can be traced to Simon Rottenberg’s theory of competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome, which is widely considered as the kick-start for team sport economics. The theory states that in order for a sport league to thrive, to attract spectators and thus be more profitable, the teams must be of approximately similar strength. Dominance, or in other words, a monopoly position of one or a few teams would harm the league, the main product itself. In order to measure the levels of competitive balance in the two leagues, a series of widely established measurement methods were used. The tools included the Herfindahl-Index, Gini Coefficient, standard deviation and historical winning percentages. -

Globalization and the Concentration of Money and Success in European Football
Financial Inequality among Firms: Globalization and the Concentration of Money and Success in European Football Stefan Leggey Steffen L¨ohrz June 14, 2019 Abstract Football has an enormous following in Europe with more than 100 million fans in the big five European markets alone and numerous more across the continent. It is also in- sightful from an economics point of view. At the core, it represents a market in which all firms compete domestically and a small subset of them sells its products and services on an international market as well. Furthermore, football is characterized by workers of dif- ferent skill level, the best of which are highly mobile across countries. In the present study, we examine two features of this market. Using a novel data set, we first document the large and increasing financial inequality among European football clubs. Subsequently, we show how strongly the inequality in financial means correlates with clubs' performance and results. (e-mail: steff[email protected]) 1 Introduction Football is more popular than any other sport in the world. According to Nielsen, more than forty percent of people 16 or older in major population centers around the world consider themselves interested or highly interested in following football.1 However, football is not only interesting for fans but also for economists. -

Two years ago, Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. • There have been seven previous UEFA Champions League finals between clubs from the same country, all since 2000. Real Madrid were victorious in all-Spanish affairs in 2000 (Valencia), 2014 and 2016 (both Atlético de Madrid) while AC Milan beat fellow Italian side Juventus on penalties in 2003 and Bayern München overcame Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 all-German final. • City are the ninth English club to appear in a European Cup final, more than any other country; Italy and Germany are next on the list with six each. -

The Dutch side are guaranteed to finish third, while Rosenborg's ambition for Matchday 6 will be to provide an encore of last season, when they also lost their first five group games, before avoiding a whitewash with a 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig in their final fixture. Previous meetings • The Matchday 2 encounter in Trondheim resulted in a 4-1 victory for PSV, with 20-year-old Donyell Malen scoring twice for the visitors as they equalled their biggest margin of victory in a UEFA Europa League group stage match. • PSV had also won both of the clubs' two previous encounters, in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League group stage, a 2-1 victory in Trondheim preceding a 1-0 home success two weeks later. • That home win over Rosenborg is the only one PSV have managed in three games against Norwegian opponents in Eindhoven. -

First one is to provide an extensive theory basis of European club football in the field of sports economics. The second objective is to further study the connection between financial performance and sporting success in European club football. The study especially seeks answers if financially successful clubs do well also in the field and vice versa. Motivational factor behind the study is UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations, and the study aims to reveal their impact on the connection between clubs’ financial and sporting performance. Data and methodology The sample consists of 690 observations of 139 different clubs that have played in top-five leagues (English Premier League, German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, Italian Serie A and Spanish La Liga) between years 2008 and 2016. Financial data consists of revenues and operating profit, and it’s restricted through public availability. Sporting success is measured by domestic league positions.
