HYH Re Redneck Revolution.Pub Redneck Revolution Country music singer Gretchen Wilson brought her Redneck Revolution Tour to Washing- ton, D.C. recently. And, except for the 25,000 fans at an all-day music festival, the political establishment paid her little notice. Big mistake. Wilson’s lyrics reflect a tidal wave of emotion running like a riptide below the surface of public debate. Her song "Politically Uncorrect" captures the feelings of millions of blue collar workers all across North America. She starts with: I'm for the low man on the totem pole And I'm for the underdog God bless his soul And I'm for the guys still pulling third shift And the single mom raisin’ her kids I'm for the preachers who stay on their knees And I'm for the sinner who finally believes And I’m for the farmer with dirt on his hands And the soldiers who fight for this land Wilson's final refrain goes like this: Nothing wrong with the Bible Nothing wrong with the flag Nothing wrong with the working man, me and Ol' Hag We're just some of many who can't get no respect Politically uncorrect, Politically uncorrect. Think of those lyrics next time a Washington or Ottawa politician or pundit issues another polished sound bite. This single mom from Pocahontas, Illinois is making history. With an eighth grade educa- tion and years of tending bar at Big O's on the outskirts of her hometown, Gretchen Wil- son’s first album, “Here for the Party,” proved to be a quadruple platinum recording. Little wonder. There's some down home wisdom in her lyrics. #57 English 06/26/06 .

STAND BY YOUR MAN, REDNECK WOMAN: TOWARDS A HISTORICAL VIEW OF COUNTRY MUSIC GENDER ROLES by CENATE PRUITT Under the Direction of Wendy S. Simonds ABSTRACT Country music, considered a uniquely American musical genre, has been relatively under-researched compared to rock and rap music. This thesis proposes research into the topic of country music, specifically the ways which country music songs portray gender. The thesis uses Billboard chart data to determine commercially successful songs, and performs a content analysis on the lyrics of these songs. I will select songs from a fifty year period ranging from 1955 to 2005, so as to allow for a longitudinal study of potential changes in

"I LOVE THIS BAR": WORKING CLASS EXPRESSION THROUGH KARAOKE SONG SELECTION Mark T. Gerolami A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2007 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Steven Cornelius ii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis probes the meaning and processes of karaoke song selection at Whiskey Dick’s, a working-class bar in Bowling Green, Ohio. Through research, observations, and interviews conducted from 2005 to 2006, it examines how working-class identity manifests itself in karaoke song selection. As part of positioning the author into the study, I introduce my own background and discuss my history with both karaoke music and working-class culture. An analysis of a single night at Whiskey Dick’s creates a framework for specific observations and gives the reader greater context, while the lengthy enthnography provides for more generalized observations. In interviews and discussions with the singers I attempt to uncover the meaning behind each song selected, discovering how conscious singers are of their choices. For some participants my research eventually impacted how they pick songs thus raising issues of intrusion by the ethnomusicologist. I examine several of the most popular songs at Whiskey Dick’s and analyze the lyrics of each, focusing on class representation within the lyrics. In addition, the difficulties of speaking about music and our musical preferences are explored and discussed in reference to the singers at Whiskey Dick’s. iii This thesis is dedicated to everyone who enjoys making music a part of life.
