Swimming is New Zealand’s second most popular recreational activity with 1 million New Zealanders choosing swimming as their preferred activity (Sport NZ 2013/14 Active New Zealand Survey). Our vision is to inspire enjoyment, excellence and pride in swimming by all New Zealanders. Our mission is to grow and strengthen swimming by providing services to the members of Swimming New Zealand, supporters and the general public. With strong leadership and governance from our Board and Management Team and with the tireless dedication of our passionate staff, we deliver our vision. Swimming New Zealand provides advice and leadership to the New Zealand community on all matters pertaining to swimming. Our activities can be separated into three specific areas: education, competitive swimming and high performance. He Hītori o te Māori ki ngā Taumāhekeheke o te Ao A history of Māori competing at the Olympic Games The Olympics are spread over three sections: Summer Olympic Games – starting in 1896 at Athens, Greece Winter Olympics Games – starting in 1924 at Chamonix, France Paralympic Games – starting in 1960 at Rome, Italy E ngā mātāwaka o te motu, tenā Koutou katoa. Māori to date have won a total of fifteen gold medals, eight silver medals and six bronze medals. At the Rio Māori had 43 athletes in the Summer Olympics (21.6%) and 7 Officials, 4 Māori in the Rio Paralympics, and 2 Maori representing Australia in the Summer Olympics. -
