All international students (except U.S. citizens, Permanent Residents, and those holding visas which allow them to study in the U.S.) accepted into the Washington Semester Certificate Program must apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa. Students from institutions that have formal affiliations with the Washington Semester Program will apply for DS-2019s to obtain their J-1 exchange visas; all other students will apply for 1-20s to obtain their F-1 student visas.

Please note that we cannot guarantee the availability of internships in specific fields. International students are not eligible to work in the executive branch of government, i.e., the , , or the State Department. However, Congress, the judicial branch, and other agencies and associations are open to international students. Program faculty members have information regarding a variety of opportunities in legislative and nongovernmental offices in Washington. They will gladly share this information with students and assist them in making initial contacts when the semester begins. Access to the program's internship database is provided to each student approximately five weeks before their arrival in Washington.

In compliance with the student Right-To-Know Act, American University publishes annual reports which disclose information about the athletic programs and campus security. The campus security report included campus crime statistics and is publishes annually by September 1. A copy may be obtained by calling (202) 885-2525. The athletic reports include athlete participation and graduation rates and are published annually by October 15.
