Saturday, April 22, 2017 NORTH CANTERBURY’S BEST READ COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER Sooner is better

As many of our readers will be aware, NZ Post has changed its rural delivery from the beginning of April. This would have meant a sig- nificant portion of our readers wouldn’t get their weekend edition of the Northern Outlook until Monday. As a solution, we’re changing our publication and delivery day to ensure none of our community miss out. From May 5, the Northern Out- look Saturday edition will become a Friday edition. Our midweek edition will still have all the action from the week- end, including sport coverage, and start off the week with local news and photos, wonderful recipes and health advice from our columnists, as well as our Prop- erty Outlook liftout with hun- dreds of homes for sale plus the weekend’s Open Homes. The Friday edition will bring you all the news, views and images from around the region, and the bumper list of what’s happening over the weekend so The Women’s Section of RSA prepare the poppies ahead of the street appeal. EMMA DANGERFIELD/FAIRFAX NZ you can plan, prepare and be informed - a day early! To kick off our new day with a bang, we’re going to be tackling one of the biggest issues facing the region - traffic and the dreaded Prepping the poppies commute. The Bowranda patio roof is constructed of powder coated aluminium and stainless steel xings to ensure it will withstand coastal conditions. Eliminates 99% of UV whilst maintaining ambient light. The Government’s announcement of a $2 billion package to address the pay inequity in the predominantly female aged care sector has been welcomed by Grey Power North Canterbury. President Miles Jackson said the package would address a long standing underpayment for people who work in the aged care sector. ‘‘This is demanding and diffi- cult work, usually and tradition- ally – but not exclusively – undertaken by women,’’ Jackson said. ‘‘There was never any justifi- cation for people in this essential role to be so poorly paid.’’ The package will see more than 55,000 workers receive a minimum pay rise of $4 an hour, going up as much as $7 an hour in some cases. Thirteen bridges in the Hurunui district have been ranked as high priority for detailed investi- gation following post-earthquake inspections by Opus and Fulton Hogan. A report to the Hurunui District Council (HDC) said the bridges suffered significant damage in the November 14 quakes. The report also detailed 25 bridges having suffered minor damage and 11 having received less than minor damage, or not ‘‘visually damaged at all’’. The rankings would dictate the timeline for further investigations into the repair work. HDC infrastructure services and assets man- ager David Edge said the primary focus after the earthquake was to provide access to all roads in the district as soon as possible. ‘‘Especially if there were any cases of com- munity isolation as a result of there being no alternative access/exit route available.’’ The bridges which suffered higher levels of damage would have weight and speed restrictions on them until fully assessed, and possible remedial works undertaken, Edge said. The ‘‘rough order’’ of repair costs for the bridges was $7.2 million. ‘‘To get the bridges back up to scratch will require forbearance, prudent assessments, invest- ment commitment, procurement, quality control and an element of relief from any further natural disasters.’’ The cost would include investigation, assess- ment, remedial design, contracts, tendering and physical work, Edge said. ‘‘Any works identified that may require bridge closures will be done in engagement and consul- tation with affected property owners and stakeholders for most appropriate timing of these works. Where any proposed remedial bridge clos- ure exceeds a reasonable closure time period, then an alternative ford crossing will be considered for ongoing access, if physically practical,’’ he said. The physical work was targeted to start this year and run through to 2019, subject to New Zea- land Transport Agency approval and funding. The bridges on the Inland Road from Red Post Corner up to Kaikoura SH1 and including the Waiau River Bridge are covered by the North Can- terbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery alliance.

The owners of the earthquake- damaged Hurunui Hotel are at their wits end and say the historic building needs a fairy godmother. The hotel, which has a category one heritage rating, was red stickered shortly after last November’s Kaikoura earth- quake. JONATHAN LEASK

The Rangiora High School 1st XV will take plenty of positives from their pre-season efforts as they head into UC Championship rugby competition next week. Their last pre-season match was their first at home and they ran out 24-5 winners over Central Southland College. Although they completed four wins from five preseason fixtures, there is still plenty of work to be done. With a dominant scrum and line out, RHS made a strong start to lead 10-0 in the opening quarter. Hooker Josh Duckworth peeled off the back of a maul to score untouched before halfback Del rio MacIntosh scored from a ruck. The early signs were positive, playing with width and accuracy to constantly stretch the visitors. The second quarter got messy as basic errors and poor execution crept into the RHS game, thwarting a series of promising attacks, resulting in the need for some strong defense. The stop-start nature didn’t allow the hosts dominant forward pack any continuity, proving frus- trating to players and spectators Rangiora High School’s Angus Fletcher comes into contact against Central Southland College in Rangiora.
