Garden and Grounds The Old Rectory sits well in its 2 acres of garden and grounds which include formal areas of lawn, herbaceous borders with mature trees, plants and shrubs. Coach House Coach House Situation The Old Rectory occupies an edge of village position within Brightwalton, a rural village high on the Berkshire Downs in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within a Conservation Area. The village is positioned 12 miles north of Newbury and 6 miles to the south of Wantage and has a well-run primary school which has been running for some 60 years. There is also the Church of All Saints which dates back to the Domesday (1086) but was almost completely rebuilt in 1861 in a gothic Revival style possibly under the guidance of George Edmund Street. The property is well located for communications, being only 7 miles to the north of Junction 13 of the M4, 7.5 miles to the A34 and 12 miles to the south west of Didcot which provides a fast and regular train service to London Paddington taking approximately 45 minutes. Oxford is 21 miles by car. The larger commercial centres of Swindon, Oxford and Reading are all within easy commuting distance and the local market towns of Hungerford, Wantage and Newbury provide excellent day to day facilities including, a Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis in the latter town. The village of Chaddleworth is approximately 1.5 miles away and has a farm shop and public house. The surrounding downland provides excellent opportunities for riding and walking with a number of footpaths and bridleways in the immediate area. All distances and times are approximate.     September 2011 News & You County First Aid Training On Sunday 11th September, eleven members and club leaders from our clubs attended ABC medical services to take part in their Emergency First Aid course. We all had great fun taking part in the course as it means not only are we able to be first aiders within our clubs but also first aiders in our places of work. We spent the day looking at what we would do if there was an accident so we learnt all about resuscitation, bleeding, shock etc. It was a really good day and now we all feel confident about doing first aid if ever it is needed. A big thank you must go to Biddy for organising the day. If you are interested in doing a first aid course too please let your club chairman know. Plans for the 2011/12 Year Book are underway!     Account of Purley on Thames My Purley Grandparents by Tom Farmer R200370 2/6/2017 This series of articles was published in Purley Parish News between June 1989 and January 1990 My mother's parents, Charles and Mary Ann Heath, came to live in Purley towards the end of the last century. They live first in a thatched cottage opposite the present shops in Purley Rise but soon moved to a semi-detached cottage in the Street which at one time with its neighbour looked as though it was going to derelict but have both been well restored and turned into one cottage. They came from the small village of Brightwalton on the Berkshire downs about half way between Newbury and Wantage, also a semi-detached cottage called the "pit" built into a disused chalk pit, a typical two up and two down, like their new home. Grandad was a farm labourer and Gran had been in service like so many couples in the country at that time. In that cottage they had eight children - Florence (my mother), Thomas, Arthur, Charles, Alice, Andrew, Sarah and william, although my mother was out at work when the last was born. As far as I know they had all left home when they came to Purley, Grandad to work in the same job for Mr Saunders whose farm was at the bottom of New Hill. My parents kept a small general shop in West Reading and, when as a small child my mother said my grandmother was coming to see us, I thought she meant my father's mother (who was widowed and lived with us for a part of the year).
