Peter Schoenke Chairman Fantasy Sports Trade Association 600 North Lake Shore Drive Chicago, IL 60611 To the Massachusetts Office of The Attorney General about the proposed regulations for Daily Fantasy Sports Contest Operators: The Fantasy Sports Trade Association welcomes this opportunity to submit feedback on the proposed regulations for the Daily Fantasy Sports industry. It's an important set of regulations not just for daily fantasy sports companies, but also for the entire fantasy sports industry. Since 1998, the FSTA has been the leading representative of the fantasy sports industry. The FSTA represents over 300 member companies, which provide fantasy sports games and software used by virtually all of the 57 million players in North America. The FSTA's members include such major media companies as ESPN, CBS, Yahoo!, NBC, NFL.com, NASCAR Digitial Media and FOX Sports, content and data companies such as USA Today, RotoWire, RotoGrinders, Sportradar US and STATS, long-standing contest and league management companies such as Head2Head Sports, RealTime Fantasy Sports, the Fantasy Football Players Championship, MyFantasyLeague and almost every major daily fantasy sports contest company, including FanDuel, DraftKings, FantasyAces and FantasyDraft. First of all, we'd like to thank you for your approach to working with our industry. Fantasy sports have grown rapidly in popularity the past twenty years fueled by technological innovation that doesn't often fit with centuries old laws. Daily fantasy sports in particular have boomed the last few years along with the growth of mobile devices. That growth has brought our industry new challenges. We look forward to working with you to solve these issues and hope it will be a model for other states across the country to follow. -

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY the Reality of Fantasy Sports
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY The Reality of Fantasy Sports: Transforming Fan Culture in the Digital Age A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of Media, Technology and Society By Ben Shields EVANSTON, ILLINOIS June 2008 2 © Copyright by Ben Shields 2008 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT The Reality of Fantasy Sports: Transforming Fan Culture in the Digital Age Ben Shields This dissertation analyzes the transformation of fantasy sports from a deviant, outside- the-mainstream fan culture to a billion-dollar industry that comprises almost 20 million North American participants. Fantasy sports are games in which participants adopt the simultaneous roles of owner, general manager, and coach of their own teams of real athletes and compete in leagues against other fantasy teams with the individual statistical performance of athletes determining the outcome of the match and league standings over a season. Through an analysis of how fantasy sports institutions are co-opting an existing fan culture, the dissertation seeks to contribute to an emerging body of scholarship on the communication dynamic between fans and media institutions in the digital age. In order to understand this cultural shift within the context of fantasy sports, it focuses on three research questions: What is the history of fantasy sports? Why do fantasy sports stimulate avid and engaged fan behaviors? How do fantasy sports institutions communicate with fantasy sports fan cultures? The methodology employed in this study combines both an ethnographic approach and textual analysis. Personal interviews were conducted with fifteen decision makers from fantasy sports companies such as SportsBuff, Rotowire, Fantasy Auctioneer, Mock Draft Central, Grogan’s Fantasy Football, CBS Sportsline, and ESPN. -

EXAMINING THE LEGALIZATION OF DAILY FANTASY SPORTS By Mark Dourmashkin Technology has undoubtedly changed the way fantasy sports are delivered to the consumer.1 Through the creation and development of fantasy sports over the past decades, the fantasy sports industry has changed the way people watch and enjoy sports.2 The idea of fantasy sports began in the 1920s and grew in the early 1960s when the first fantasy football league was created.3 Nearly twenty years later, the first official fantasy league was created in 1980, and the creators of the league referred to the fantasy as ―real life.‖4 At the time, the game was simple because newspaper box scores were the only resource fantasy leagues had to keep track of statistics.5 With the emergence of the Internet and computers to the general public in the mid-1990s, new technology allowed fantasy sports to connect to millions of people around the United States.6 Online resources exposed fantasy users to an unlimited wealth of material to research player statistics and create fantasy 1 Ben Klayman, Technology spurs growth of fantasy sports, REUTERS (Sept. -

The Historical Development and Marketing of Fantasy Sports Leagues
Fantasy Sports Leagues The Journal of SPORT, 2013, 2(2), 185-215 © Kent State University The Historical Development and Marketing of Fantasy Sports Leagues Rick Burton Syracuse University Kevin Hall Syracuse University Rodney Paul Syracuse University Abstract By 2013, fantasy sports leagues (and games) were entered into and played by more than an estimated 32-million people (Dwyer, 2013) across American and Canada, and produced a projected economic impact of $3.1-billion dollars annually (Fantasy Sports Trade Association, 2012). This work seeks to explain both the historical growth and cultural transitions of in-home sport gaming in the United States as well as the technological evolution that drove the appeal of modern ‘fantasy sports’ and continued enhancement of professional league avidity by developing stronger brand allegiances for leagues such as Major League Baseball (MLB) or the National Football League (NFL). From a historical standpoint, the term ‘Fantasy League’ didn’t garner popularity until the 1980s, but the concept of fantasy sports gaming can be traced back to the mid-1860s with a simple wooden tabletop contraption that simulated outcome elements of a baseball game (Cooper, 1995). Over the next 150 years, technological and social developments in the areas of in-home re-creation and networked gaming have caused fantasy sports to re-shape sports media coverage, sports marketing (particularly of sports data), fan avidity, technology engagement and general sport discussion. The impact of these fan-based developments might prove significant and increasingly leagues like the NFL have been forced to ask whether the at-home experience of following professional football (including the owning and managing of fantasy football league teams) is reaching a point where it could replace attending NFL games in person. -

Daily Fantasy Sports Leagues: Do You Have the Skill to Win at These Games of Chance?
\\jciprod01\productn\N\NVG\5-2\NVG204.txt unknown Seq: 1 27-MAY-15 13:44 DAILY FANTASY SPORTS LEAGUES: DO YOU HAVE THE SKILL TO WIN AT THESE GAMES OF CHANCE? Michael Trippiedi* INTRODUCTION Week three of the National Football League season just ended with the completion of the Monday night game. Jack has now witnessed his fantasy team get crushed for the third straight week, and there is no hope in sight that things will change. His number one pick in the draft is already out for the season, having torn his ACL in week two. His second and third round picks have been utter disasters, with one of them already having been benched. There is virtually no hope for Jack’s team to rebound this year. However, Jack loves fantasy football. It makes the games more interesting for him. He can watch any game involving players on his fantasy roster and root like he would for his favorite team. However, when your fantasy team is not competitive, all of that goes right out the door. Jack begins to surf the web for fantasy tips on how he might be able to save his fantasy season, but in the process he finds a handful of links for web- sites running “daily” fantasy (or “weekly,” in the case of football) leagues. Intrigued, Jack clicks on the links and loves what he finds; he can play a “daily” league every Sunday, complete with a new draft and all new players. He no longer has to stress about his roster composition, bye-week pickups, and season-long injuries to his best players.
