CHANGE TO THE SCHOOL DAY Diary Dates 2015/2016 As you know, we are currently going through a period of consultation about a change to the school day which September Thursday 3rd Staff Training Day will result in less movement around the Academy and longer lessons. We know from our curriculum Friday 4th Staff Training Day modelling that this will also result in fewer shared classes, and that longer lessons will enable us to give more depth to students’ learning. Monday 7th First Day of Term Years 7 & 12

Crucially, from September the school day will start at 8.30am with lesson 1. Therefore, it is vitally important Tuesday 8th First Day of Term Years 8, 9, 10, 11 & 13 that all children arrive on site by 8.25am so that their learning will commence at 8.30am. If your child is Thursday 17th Year 11 Achievement Evening punctual regularly then there is nothing to worry about. However, if your child does not arrive on time their learning will be affected by their lateness. Therefore, I am urging all students to be on the premises by Thursday 24th Key Stage 3 Welcome Evening 8.25am at the latest so that there can be an immediate start to learning at 8.30am.

Students were maintaining 100% attendance this academic year. Keep up the good work! able to secure an insight from a real life business organisation observing Marketing and Human Resources. Students also received rewards for being on or above the Academy target of 95%, and the most improved attendance. If any students have any ideas for future rewards please let me know. They were provided with the opportunity to absorb material about the importance of good customer services for a successful business. This assisted the students to become more equipped for studying their Medical Appointments assignment Unit 4 Principle of Customer Service. A reminder to Parents/Carers that medical appointments should be made out of school hours where possible. We do appreciate that this is sometimes difficult and would ask that students only take the necessary time out of school, not A special thank you to Mr Aruna and Ms Ram who also accompanied the Business students, supporting the whole day. Medical evidence will be requested for all students. them in their learning and development throughout the day! Punctuality Please ensure that your child arrives on time for school. Students need to be on the Academy premises by 8.25am so that they will not be late to registration at 8.30am. Students who arrive late will be required to do a 20 minute detention on the same day, failure to attend will result in a 2 hour detention with their Achievement Leader on a Friday afternoon. If your child has a detention already and is late it will be rolled over for the next available day.

Being frequently late for school adds up to lost learning: Arriving 5 minutes late every day adds up to over 3 days lost each year Arriving 15 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 2 weeks a year Arriving 30 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 19 days a year

Attendance & Persistent Absentees The Academy attendance target is 95%; any students below this will be monitored and if they drop below 85% All Saints Academy will need medical evidence to be able to approve any absence. Medical evidence can be any one of the following: copy of an appointment card/letter, a note from the GP/Practice Nurse giving reason for absence, a copy of a prescription made out to the student, or any other suitable documentary evidence. A decision on whether or not to authorise the absence will be made by the Academy.

To give you an example of how your child’s attendance can be affected please see the facts below: 20 days off per school year = 90% attendance

90% attendance = 4 whole weeks off school 90% attendance in Years 7– 11 means half a year off school

90% attendance for your child throughout Primary and means they will have missed a whole year of school in their education

Absence

All Absences should be reported at the earliest possible convenience on each day of absence, by calling 01582 619700 and selecting Option 2.

Please be aware if the Academy has not been advised of student absence there is every likely hood that Lucy Anson- Golding (Education Welfare Officer) will carry out a door knock and visit the family home.

Holidays during term time

Lucy Anson-Golding is supporting the Academy in the use of Fixed Penalty Notices where parents/carers take students out of the Academy for a holiday.

Penalty Notice fines for holidays in term time are £60 per parent per child if paid within 21 days and £120 if paid between 22 and 28 days.

May I thank you for your continued support in ensuring that attendance at All Saints Academy continues to improve. You may be aware that the Government recently introduced Pupil Premium. This is an additional funding stream for disadvantaged students which aims to raise attainment and close the gap between them and their peers. It is payable to students who:

 are entitled to or are in receipt of free school meals, or have been in the last six years  are children of service personnel  are children designated as ‘looked after’

The funding is directed specially at these students and may be used for items such as 1 to 1 or small group tuition, revision guides, help with costs for educational visit, equipment, uniform etc. The process of funding support is discreet and students in receipt of it are not singled out in any way.

Who is eligible for Free School Meals? If you think that you as a parent/carer are eligible to apply for FSMs for your child, or if you are not sure, you may wish to contact the Central Bedfordshire Council Customer Services Helpdesk on 0300 300 8000 and a member of the team will be able to advise you. When calling, it will help if you have your National Insurance number to hand - in this way you will be able to register for Free School Meals immediately should you be eligible to do so.

In order to be entitled to claim FSMs a parent/carer must be claiming one of the following benefits:

 Income support; or  Income Based Job Seekers Allowance; or  Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (this benefit was introduced from 27 October 2008); or  Child Tax Credit, but who are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and whose annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) does not exceed £16,190; or  Support under part VI of the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999; or  Guarantee element of State Pension Credit

If you think that your child may be eligible for Free School Meals and/or Pupil Premium and you would like more information, please get in touch with me.

Yours sincerely

The day involved teamwork and communication skills in groups and this gave students from different year groups a chance to get to know each other. The following weeks we started in the small swimming pool at Dunstable Leisure Centre and we gradually worked our way up to 1.8 Metres, this was a massive jump for a lot of people as they were nervous about getting in to the swimming pool at first! The course was really good fun and we learned lots including all the swimming techniques. On the last week we had a challenge in the main pool, followed by a massive party and everybody played water netball and also some water polo. On the last day we had a further session with Ian Rose which involved judo and communicational skills and teamwork. Judo was very good because we got taught everything that we need to know so we can now use the judo skills safely and with confidence. Overall, I think the whole course has been a great experience, working with Mr Conway, Mr Russell and Ian Rose. I think that both my technique and my confidence in swimming have improved as a result. Year 11 Prom was, as ever, a huge success and our Year 11s turned out in all their finery to celebrate the end of their time in KS4. Staff and students danced the night away at Bury, , until the early hours of the morning until it was time to say final goodbyes. The number of students this year far exceded any previous year and it was fantastic to see so many staff and students turning out to celebrate their success. Once again, behaviour was impeccable and the venue staff made a point of telling us that.

We wish all of our students the very best and look forward to seeing some of them return for Sixth Form next year.
