Sather, who is the 22nd head men’s basketball coach at Northern State, is a 1996 graduate of NSU. Sather has compiled an 126-78 record while at Northern. In 2016-17 the Wolves finished tied for second in the overall league standings with Southwest Minnesota State, finishing 22-8 overall and 17-5 in the NSIC. Three Wolves garnered All-NSIC honors as Logan Doyle was named the NSIC Newcomer of the year and to the NSIC first team, and Ian Smith and Mack Arvidson were named to the NSIC second team. Northern State junior DJ Pollard was named the NSIC Elite 18 recipient holding the top GPA from the NSIC Championships with a 3.96 mark. In his sixth season at the helm Sather landed two on the All-NSIC second team in senior Skye Warwick and junior Darin Peterka. The Wolves also tallied an upset victory over then No. 1 Augustana 90-81. The Sather File In 2014-15 he led the Wolves to their first NCAA Regional appearance since the 2008-09 season. As an assistant for the Wolves in the early years of his career, Sather was a part of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) regular season championships and NSU’s first ever NSIC Tournament Championship.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1996 from Northern State University, he served as physical education teacher and assistant boys’ basketball coach at Sidney High School in Nebraska from 1996-1997. The following year he was a graduate assistant at Wayne State College while he earned his master’s degree in sports administration.

Originally from Princeton, Minn., Sather had a stellar career collegiate career as a Wolf from 1990-1994. He was team captain for the NSU when they earned back-to-back national runner-up finishes in 1993 and 1994.

Sather resides in Aberdeen with his wife Kelsie and their two children, Sam and Becca. Michael Cooper Student Assistant Michael Cooper enters his third season with the Northern State University men’s basketball team in 2017-18 as a student assistant. A native of Monticello, Minn., Cooper directly assists the coaching staff with game preparation, film and video breakdown, player development and statistical analysis.

He is pursuing a bachelors degree in Biology with an emphasis in biotechnology at Northern State.

Sundance Wicks Associate Head Coach Sundance Wicks enters his second season with the Wolves men’s basketball team in 2017-18. Wicks returned to the NSU sidelines after spending the 2015-16 season with the University of San Francisco Dons. In his first season back, the Wolves posted a 22-8 record overall and 17-5 mark finishing tied for second in the league overall standings. SDSU transfer Logan Doyle was named the NSIC Newcomer of the year, while Ian Smith and Mack Arvidson were named to the NSIC second team. Coach Wicks emphasized defense throughout his first season with the Wolves, leading the team to a league leading marks in percentage defense (.443) and rebounding margin (+7.4).

Since his time as a Northern State student-athlete from 1999-2003, Wicks has held assistant coaching positions at NSU, Colorado (2006-07), Northern Illinois (2007-11), and most recently San Francisco. In his season with the Dons, San Francisco finished fifth in the West Coast Conference behind the likes of Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga and BYU. USF tallied a 15-15 record overall and 8-10 record in the difficult WCC.

From 2011-15, Wicks worked tirelessly in launching the Arizona Basketball Academy. He built APBA from the ground up and served as a skill instructor and program director based out of Gilbert, Arizona. Prior to launching the Arizona Power Basketball Academy, Wicks spent five months training NBA Pre-Draft prospects at the Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas. His draft class trainees included Kawhi Leonard (), Alec Burks (Utah Jazz), Isaiah Thomas (), Xavier Silas (Northern Illinois), Jon Diebler (Ohio State), Malcom Lee (UCLA), and Jordan Williams (Maryland).

Wicks began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant under the legendary Don Meyer for two seasons (2004-06). During his tenure, he helped the Wolves reach the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 in 2005-06. He then joined the Colorado staff for one season (2006-07) as an assistant coach before moving onto Northern Illinois, where he served for four seasons (2007-11) under head coach Ricardo Patton. With the Buffalos and the Huskies, Wicks played an instrumental role in the development of Xavier Silas, who earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 2010-11 after leading the MAC in scoring with a 22.3 point per game average.

An outstanding collegiate player with the Wolves, Wicks ended his four-year collegiate career as the 25th all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,174 points and helped the NSU to back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles in 2002 and 2003. A 2-time All-NSIC first team selection, Wicks started every game (105) in his career and was also a 2-time all-conference academic honoree. Wicks remains a member of the NSU record books sitting 29th all-time in scoring (1,174) and 10th all-time in rebounding (665). Wicks was also a member of the Northern State track and field team competing in the 400-meter hurdles, where he was a 2-time All-NSIC performer. As a senior he was honored with the Northern State Clark Swisher Award.

Following his collegiate career, Wicks played professionally in Sweden’s top division for one year with the Sodertalje Kings, leading the team in both scoring (18.0) and rebounding (8.0). He helped the Kings reach the semifinals of the Swedish Cup and was the only American listed in the top-20 of every statistical category at the end of the season.

Wicks is a 2003 and 2006 graduate of Northern State University with a bachelor’s degree in international business and master’s degree in health, physical education, and coaching. Brad Christenson Assistant Coach Brad “BC” Christenson begins his 26th year as an assistant coach for the Northern State men’s basketball team in 2017-18. During his previous 25 years he has worked with head coaches Bob Olson, Don Meyer and current Wolves head coach Paul Sather. With BC’s help NSU has seen a tremendous amount of success including eight conference championships, two conference tournament championships, nine NCAA Regional Tournaments, three NCAA Regional Finals, one NCAA Elite Eight and three NAIA National Tournaments where the Wolves made the Final Four all three years finishing as the National Runners-up twice. Christenson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration (1989) and Master’s degree in professional accountancy (1990) from the University of South Dakota. He received his teacher certification from NSU in 1993. In addition to his duties at Northern, Christenson has also been a math teacher at Aberdeen Central for the past 24 years. He and his wife Ashley reside in Aberdeen with their daughters Nora and Savi.

Zach Horstman Graduate Assistant Coach Zach Horstman enters his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Wolves in 2017-18. Horstman is a graduate of South Dakota State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. As a member of the Jackrabbit basketball sqaud, he appaeared in 106 games. Horstman tallied 347 career points, while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor, 31.4 percent from the arch, and 68.4 percent from the foul line. He is a native of Winner, S.D. where he was a 4-year All-Big Dakota Conference selection and the 2011 South Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year. He was also honored as the co-Mr. Basketball and the Argus Leader Player of the Year.
