TRAFFIC AND SAFETY Colonel By and Seneca pedestrian crossing is finally happening!

Work underway at the corner of Colonel By and Seneca for the construction of a signalized pedestrian crossing of Colonel By. PHOTO BY KATHY KRYWICKI

By Sue Neill

You may have noticed significant roadworks underway at the corner of Colonel By and Seneca. Since 2016, the OSCA Traffic and Safety Committee has been in active discussions and negotiation with the City, the Councillor(s) and the NCC about the need for the residents of Old Ottawa South to have a place to safely cross Colonel By Drive. Once an agreement was reached that there was indeed a need for some sort of crossing, the design details changed many times and the project was on life support more than a few times. But in the fall of 2019, we were finally assured by the City that the construction would proceed and that the budget was firm. Well, the shovels are finally in the ground and the construction of a half signalized crossing of Colonel By has started, and is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2020. There will be speed limit reductions on Colonel By Drive for the approaches. There will be a photo of the crossing in use in the fall issue of the OSCAR! Stay tuned.

Missing queens, fraudulent honey, and other beekeeping woes many hives throughout West Quebec. This parasite, which at first doesn’t sound so bad, (it is “small” after all) spoils honey through its excrement. Quebec was previously considered to be free of this pest, but now it’s a race against the clock to find all of the colonies that came through this supplier and try to contain this issue. Yikes. And yuck – their particular form of destruction apparently creates quite the mess to clean up.

Giant Asian Hornets In case you missed it – Giant Asian Hornets have made it to North America. According to Wikipedia, the Washington State Department of Agriculture has launched a ‘full-scale hunt’ for these large wasps who are intensely predatory towards bees and other large insects. My hope is that they have trouble surviving in our climate. My worry is that they won’t.

TRAVEL plans to travel to a little-known but Irish Decameron fascinating outpost of Irish culture. Shortly after it was founded in 1607, the college became renowned for scholarship, most particularly the Annals of the Four Masters, a compendium of early Irish history that has framed how we think of the Gaelic and medieval past.
