June 18, 2018, Issue 606 Inside View: CMT Music Awards Two weeks ago, CMT GM Frank Tanki noted the network’s larger CMA Fest footprint (CAW 6/4) – one that CMT Music Awards viewers may have noticed extended to the show itself. With multiple offsite performances and a venue home unaffected (sadly) by the hockey playoffs, this year’s event focused on new music and earned stable audience numbers (CAT 6/7). CMT VP/Music Events Margaret Comeaux walked Country Aircheck through putting the show together. Connecticut REALTORS, iHeartMedia and WTNH News 8 are teaming up to help reduce that staggering number. Today marks the start of a multi-month campaign to raise money and build awareness surrounding Connecticut’s opioid crisis. The campaign will air on all media platforms including television, radio, digital and social media. The highlight of the campaign will be a concert headlined by Academy of Country Music & Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Keith Urban titled “A Concert for Recovery” at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, November 17th. “CT REALTORS is committed to bettering our communities,“ said Dan Keune, 2019 President, CT REALTORS. “Whether it’s through disaster relief, food drives or volunteer efforts, our members are there. We are honored to partner with iHeartMedia and WTNH News 8 for this important effort to help reduce the stigma of opioid use disorder.” Michael Barbaro, Chair of the CT REALTORS Opioid Awareness Work Group, added, “Our hope is so much bigger than this concert. We want to make a significant impact in the way people view opioid use disorder, and remove the stigma directed at those who suffer from addiction. We can’t stay on the sidelines while so many people in our communities are suffering.” Specifics of the campaign will include public service announcements presented by local and national celebrities that speak to those seeking options and information on recovery, newscast stories and radio interviews that highlight individuals impacted by Connecticut’s opioid crisis and their road to recovery and a one-hour special television broadcast that includes highlights from Keith Urban’s “A Concert for Recovery”.

As always, our goal is to provide information and to foster change for the better in a manner that is entertaining, instructive and stimulating. The ACBL Board of Directors is testing a new appeals process at NABCs in 1999 and 2000 in which a Committee (called a Panel) comprised of pre-selected top Directors will hear appeals at NABCs from non-NABC+ events (including side games, regional events and restricted NABC events). Appeals from NABC+ events will continue to be heard by the National Appeals Committees (NAC). We will review both types of cases as we always have traditional Committee cases. Panelists were sent all cases and invited to comment on and rate each Director ruling and Panel/Committee decision. Not every panelist will comment on every case.

  • Glossary of Bridge Terms
GLOSSARY OF BRIDGE TERMS Alert When your partner makes a conventional bid you must alert this to the opponents by knocking the table (or displaying the ‘Alert’ card if using bidding boxes). Auction Another term for the bidding. Avoidance An attempt to prevent a particular defender from regaining the lead. Balanced A hand containing no void, no singleton and not more than one Hand doubleton. Barrier When planning your opener's rebid, imagine a ‘barrier’ just above your first suit at the next level up. A new suit rebid below the barrier shows 12-15 points (occasionally 16 or 17 points after a 1 level response when opener doesn’t have enough for a jump shift). A new suit rebid above the barrier that isn’t a jump shift shows 16-19 points (also known as a reverse). Blocked A suit is blocked if there is a high card in the short hand that prevents the suit from being cashed. A player will often aim to unblock the suit. Break The way in which the defenders’ cards in a particular suit are divided between their two hands. For example, a 4-2 break indicates that with 6 cards in a suit missing, one defender has 4 cards of the suit and his partner has 2 cards. Also referred to as split. Cash Playing a card that is certain to win the trick. This card is known as a master. Clear a suit Knocking out the opponents’ last stopper in a suit, after which it will be possible to cash one’s tricks in the suit.

For many years he has been planning to assemble an in-depth study of all known card play techniques and their classification. The only thing he lacked was time for the project; now, having recently retired, he has accom- plished his ambitious task. It has been my privilege to follow its progress and watch the book take shape. A book such as this should not to be put into a beginner’s hands, but it should become a well-thumbed reference source for all players who want to improve their game.
