Born in Milwaukee, Wis, Pettis began his martial arts training at the age of five and was highly influenced by his father, who pushed Pettis to train hard every day. In 2003, Pettis’ father was killed in a house robbery, which led Pettis to set the goal of becoming a professional fighter to make his father proud. The 27-year-old made his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) debut in 2007, and after going undefeated in his first eight fights as a pro, he signed with World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). Pettis enjoyed a successful WEC career, ultimately winning the belt in 2010 and going down as the last lightweight champion in WEC history. After the WEC merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Pettis would again work his way back to a title shot, once again capturing gold as the current UFC lightweight champion. Before he became a professional fighter, Pettis went to the fire academy where worked as a P.O.C fire fighter and martial arts instructor.
