2 /77 3.0 Trump said to have improvised his first calls with world leaders as president-elect (19.99/22) Donald Trump had no State Department briefing materials in front of him during his first calls with world leaders as president- elect, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The materials are standard practice for the president or president-elect in order to avoid any diplomatic hiccups in their dealings with foreign leaders.

The report painted Trump's improvised calls as largely the result of his unorganized transition team, which has seen two big shakeups in the last seven days — first on Friday, when New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was replaced by Vice-President elect Mike Pence to lead the team, and again on Tuesday, when Pence ordered that all lobbyists on the team step down.

RELATED: Donald Trump's transition team

The Times claimed that "prominent American allies" such as the UK and Israel have been "scrambling to figure out how and when to contact Mr. Trump," a report Trump denied in a series of tweets on Wednesday morning.

"I have received and taken calls from many foreign leaders despite what the failing New York Times said," Trump tweeted.

"Russia, UK, China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and more. I am always available to them. The New York Times is just upset that they looked like fools in their coverage of me. "

Trump did not respond to the Times' report that those calls broke with tradition by being largely improvised, however.

The apparently off-the-cuff calls were not the only unorthodox aspect of Trump's post-election transition. On Wednesday, Trump left Trump Tower for the first time in days without his press pool to have dinner at the 21 Club a few blocks away, according to The Associated Press.

"The movement was a surprise given that Trump's campaign had already called a 'lid' — a signal to journalists that he would not be venturing out for the rest of the day," the AP reported. "The practice is meant to ensure that journalists are on hand to witness, on behalf of the public, the activities of the president or president-elect, rather than relying on secondhand accounts. "

The Huffington Post , meanwhile, reported that six days after the election, the Obama administration still had not received a signed memorandum from Pence that would formally begin the transition of power.

"That document still hadn't arrived by 4:30 p.m. [on Tuesday], and only later in the evening did a White House official confirm it had been received. The official noted that the language signed by Pence was identical to a memo signed by Christie, making the holdup all the more peculiar. 3 /77 1.0 Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford's secret affair was nearly discovered by Mark Hamill (13.99/22) Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford's 'intense,' three- month secret affair on the 1976 London set of Star Wars was nearly discovered by their co- star Mark Hamill. According to People 's excerpt from her third memoir The Princess Diarist, Luke Skywalker himself unexpectedly dropped by the married father-of-two's apartment. 'It was about eleven in the morning. Clearly I hadn’t just dropped by for brunch, as no scones or eggs were in evidence,' the 60-year-old actress - who was 19 at the time - wrote in her tell-all. Scroll down for video 'Harrison took my hand and pronounced solemnly, "We're engaged. " It was mocking the suggestion that there was anything going on; therefore, it couldn't be true.' The 65-year-old Daytime Emmy nominee - who was 24 at the time - was either unable to use his Jedi mind tricks or he remained discreet about his castmates' tryst. 'My affair with Harrison was a very long one-night stand. I was relieved when it ended. I didn't approve of myself,' Carrie wrote. 'He didn't abuse the situation - he wouldn't have hurt me, especially once he understood that I was inexperienced. It seemed to take its natural course.' After their romance on the weekends ended, the 74-year-old Oscar nominee - then 34 - called Carrie 'smart' and said she had the 'eyes of a doe and the balls of a samurai.' When Fisher sent Ford an advanced draft of her 272-page tome - hitting shelves November 22 - he jokingly responded: 'Lawyer!' 'Harrison's very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time. How much longer could I wait?' the NY Times Bestseller told People on Tuesday. 'I didn't say anything to anybody for years but it's not like anyone's deeply affected by it anymore.' The Bright Lights star added: 'As far as I know the only time he cheated on any one of his three wives was with me. And maybe he didn't think that counted all that much because of how short I am.' Back in 2005, the National Enquirer reported that Harrison's first wife Mary Marquardt - whom he divorced in 1979 - was 'in the advanced stages of multiple sclerosis.' And as for reports Carrie called Ford 'bad in bed' she tweeted Tuesday: 'I would never talk about how someone was in any furniture - chair, bed, coffee table or otherwise.' Last year, the on and off-screen lovers locked lips in front of 6K-strong Star Wars fans packed into Comic-Con's historic Hall H. The duo had just reprised their roles as regal rebel Princess Leia and cynical smuggler Han Solo in Episode VII - The Force Awakens. The daughter of Debbie Reynolds went on to marry 12- time Grammy winner Paul Simon in 1977, but they divorced in 1983. Fisher - who's inseparable from her French Bulldog Gary - is the mother of Scream Queens' Billie Catherine Lourd with CAA co-chairman Bryan Lourd. The two-time Emmy nominee continues her portrayal of General Leia Organa - without her handsome Han Solo - in Star Wars: Episode VIII due out December 15, 2017. Meanwhile, Harrison - now a twice-divorced father-of-five - has been married to Supergirl star Calista Flockhart since 2010. Ford will continue playing Rick Deckard in Ridley Scott's sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 - due out October 6, 2017 - alongside Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, and Robin Wright.

4 /77 3.4 Ricky Martin confirms his engagement to Syrian artist boyfriend, Jwan Yosef (6.42/22) Ricky Martin is looking for love no more! The Latin signer announced on "The Ellen Degeneres" show on Tuesday that he is engaged to his boyfriend of more than a year, Jwan Yosef.

The "Livin La Vida Loca" singer said that he was the one who proposed to his boyfriend and admitted that was he was really nervous when he popped the question.

"I proposed. I was really nervous," Martin explained. "I got on my knees, and I took out the little velvet pouch and instead of saying, 'Would you marry me?' I said, 'I got you something!' Bad. " Despite his accidental faux pas, Martin powered through the proposal.

"I said, 'I want to spend my life with you,' and he said, 'What is the question?'" he recalled laughing. "It was very beautiful and then 30 minutes after, I said, 'Wait, did you say yes?'"

Martin, who is the dad of 8-year-old twin sons Mateo and Valentino, said that the whole family gets along great.

The two met through Martin's love for Syrian-born and Swedish-raised, Yosef's art.

"I saw his art and I went crazy because I really love what he does. Really original. And I contacted him and then I collected him," Martin told Ellen.

Martin hasn't been shy about his love, either. He regularly posts about his love on his social media accounts and the duo recently returned from a vacation and posted a hot snap from the time away.

Martin will have to move fast on the wedding planning. Martin also dropped the big news that he will begin a Las Vegas residency at the Monte Carlo soon.

5 /77 (4.43/22) 0.9 Yoko Ono Fights Back Against Trump In Song I pity past generations who didn’t have access to Yoko Ono’s beautiful music at the tap of a touchpad. Back in the old days, people who wanted to enjoy such soothing sounds had to go to a record store or burn down an animal shelter.

In order to capture all the subtle nuances and powerful emotion in the following a cappella anti-Trump protest song, I encourage you to turn up your volume full-blast. Make sure the neighbors can hear. It’s the only way we’re going to change things.

Dear Friends, I would like to share this message with you as my response to @realDonaldTrump love, yoko pic.twitter.com/s1BqfUgfLr

— Yoko Ono (@yokoono) November 11, 2016

Thank you, Yoko. Thank you, modern technology. Thank you, gift of hearing.

In addition to its obvious artistic merit, this is a powerful political statement. Who knows, maybe this is the way to stop Trump. After all, it’s how she stopped the Beatles.

I can’t remember… has Yoko ever given us her musical reaction to Obama’s presidency? She wants to give peace a chance, and yet a lot of people have died in Obama’s wars. Apparently, it doesn’t matter because he isn’t a Republican.

Sometimes karma is instant. Sometimes it takes a while. In this case, it’s been eight long years.

Ocean, who rarely grants interviews, told the New York Times that despite having won two Grammys in 2013, he's not interested this time around.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance," he said. "It just doesn't seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down. "

Ocean pointed to the fact that only a few African Americans have ever won the Grammy Album of the Year award.

"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated," he said. "I'd rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience. "

In October, West took a moment out of his concert while in Oakland to say he would boycott the Grammys if Ocean's album wasn't nominated.

"The album I listened to the most this year is Frank Ocean's album," West said. "I tell you what, if his album's not nominated in no categories, I'm not showing up to the Grammys. "

He then asks Curry and others to verify that his mouth is empty, which they do. He then somehow produces a third frog.

8 /77 0.0 Gilmore Girls on Netflix: 5 things you need to know

(2.06/22) On November 25, just after midnight on the West Coast, Netflix will release all four episodes of , the highly anticipated revival of the WB series , which ran from 2000 to 2007. consists of four 90- minute episodes, each covering a single season, beginning with “Winter” and ending with “Fall.” It’s helmed by , who created the show and ran the first six seasons of the seven-season broadcast run. To whet your appetite, we’re offering you a few tidbits about what you can expect from the revival. We can’t tell you anything major, like The Final Four Words, but we have five minor spoilers for you below. Stop reading now if you want to go into the revival completely cold. We’ll publish a full review of closer to the release date. obsessives will recall that in season seven — the only season not run by Amy Sherman-Palladino — Stars Hollow suddenly acquired a bar called K. C.’s. It’s where Jackson and Christopher went to “bond,” and where Lorelai sang “I Will Always Love You” to Luke on karaoke night. K. C.’s was functional, but it lacked the aggressive quirk of the rest of Stars Hollow: It’s a pretty standard, generic bar, without a single colorful character to its name. Sherman-Palladino is having none of this colorless lack of quirk. In , we learn that there is only one bar in all of Stars Hollow, and it’s not K. C.’s. It’s called The Secret Bar, and it has, to quote Babette, color coming out of its yin-yang. One of the burning questions fans had after the end of the broadcast series was, of course, what happened to Luke and Lorelai. They were engaged all of the sixth season but never made it to the altar, and after they spent season seven estranged and barely talking, all the finale had to offer as hope for the future was a single, ambiguous kiss. So Luke and Lorelai shippers breathed a sigh of relief back in April, when. But in the first episode, “Winter,” Luke and Lorelai are happily committed to one another, living together, but not married or engaged — a state of affairs on which Emily Gilmore, as always, has strong opinions. The brilliant Edward Herrmann , so it’s always been clear that would have to find some way to deal with Richard Gilmore’s absence. Just how it planned to do so wasn’t quite so clear, but now we know that as “Winter” begins, Richard has been dead for four months, and our main characters are beginning to emerge from the first stages of their grief. That doesn’t mean we don’t see Richard’s funeral, though. It’s shown in flashbacks. And speaking of those flashbacks… has always had a flexible relationship with time. There are a lot of weeks with multiple Friday nights so that Rory and Lorelai can have multiple Friday night dinners with Emily and Richard; the timeline of Rory and Lorelai’s life before the show begins skitters wildly around so that in some episodes they’ve lived in Stars Hollow since Rory was 6 and in some since she was 12. Time follows story beats on , not the other way around, and it’s no surprise that follows suit. But handles the pacing very differently than the show did in its broadcast run. Instead of covering a few weeks in 45 minutes, every episode of covers three months in 90 minutes, so it has to develop an entirely new vocabulary for how to express the passage of time and how to keep character beats on track. So we get flashbacks, which is a convention that the show only tried its hand at once over the course of the broadcast run; we skip whole weeks at a time and cover other weeks in minute detail. The effect is jarring — it’s just not the way usually feels — but not necessarily unpleasant. , and boy can you see it on. The video is of higher quality than it ever was. The tiny little WB backlot that serves as Stars Hollow has never looked so well-dressed. The soundtrack features expensive and iconic music. And there are multiple enormous production numbers that show off showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino’s theatrical roots, with elaborate lighting, costuming, and choreography. If you ever thought really needed a few more dance numbers, has you covered. ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival: Netflix Really Wants You to Sutton Foster, Jeanine Watch the Gilmore Girls Tesori on the Musical Revival With Your Mom variety.com feeds.adweek.com

12 /77 (1.15/22) 1.1 Port Huron rapper moves back to Michigan A hip-hop artist that attended Port Huron High School has recently moved back to Michigan to pursue his music career in his home state.

Shawn Anderson, better known as Substance, grew up in Port Huron where he first discovered his passion for turning words into art.

“I graduated from Port Huron High School in 2002,” Anderson said. “During high school I was really big into writing poetry and short stories and that gradually turned in to writing lyrics.”

For Anderson, music and lyrics were a way to add art into the world in the way he was able to. He loves painting, but isn’t a painter. So music was his way of adding to the layers of art.

“Music is a way for me to create art,” he said. “It’s not just music or rapping, but something someone can related to and will touch people deeply on another level," he said.

And one of his songs is something that many locals to the Blue Water Area can related to.

Anderson, 32, now lives in Belleville since moving back to Michigan from Arizona, but he still considers Port Huron home.

In his song “Stomping Grounds,” he raps: “There’s nothing like home…PH (sic) versus everybody.”

He said while he has traveled and lived many places, Port Huron is still his stomping ground.

The song is on his most recent album, “Outta sight outta mind,” that was released two months ago.

Some tracks are dreamy formulas with smooth rap overlays, while others are more classic compilations.

While anyone can head to his bandcamp.com site to listen to or purchase the songs, Anderson said he won’t have any local shows until the start of the New Year. In the meantime, Anderson will be working on new music projects and collaborating with other artists to produce more music in the future.

14 /77 2.2 Inside the £59 MILLION wedding of Indian tycoon Janardhana Reddy's daughter (1.03/22) Images have appeared of the lavish £59million wedding of an Indian tycoon's daughter which has rocked the poverty- stricken country. Former politician-turned-mining boss Gali Janardhan Reddy has taken over a royal palace and flown in Brazilian dancers to celebrate the wedding of his daughter as the country reels from a cash crisis. Up to 50,000 people are expected at the sprawling Bangalore Palace, a mock Tudor castle in southern India, to celebrate in a Hindu ceremony today. Local media criticised the extravagance at a time when many Indians are struggling to find the cash to eat after the government's shock move to pull high-value notes out of circulation in a bid to tackle tax evasion. Scroll down for video The lavish bash is said to have cost businessmen and ex-state minister Reddy an estimated 5bn rupees - which is equivalent to £59million or $74million. Video footage obtained by MailOnline shows dozens of dancers on stage moving to booming music. Guests are gathered in front of the stage akin to a concert with many holding up their phones to take videos and photos. Part of the ceremony was also filmed as adoring guests watch the couple get married. The wedding invitations arrived in a gold-plated box, containing a card setting out details of the affair, and with an LED screen fitted into the lid. The video that plays on the screen shows Reddy's daughter Brahmani wearing a series of fancy gowns, while her fiancé Rajeev Reddy is flanked by five white horses. Meanwhile, Janardhan Reddy and his wife lip-sync to a song that was composed especially for the wedding. The wedding kicked off just days after the Indian government announced an overnight ban on 500 and 1,000 rupee notes in a crackdown on illegal cash holding. The government scrapped the two notes, making redundant the vast majority of currency that Indians use on a daily basis in the country's largely cash-based economy. The move has hit low-income Indians hard, including traders and ordinary savers who rely on the cash economy. Many have been standing in long queues at banks to deposit expired money and exchange notes for smaller denominations, and frustration in the country is widespread. Weddings in India are often opulent affairs, and it is not unusual for payments for services to be made in cash. Mr Reddy reportedly said he had mortgaged properties in Bangalore and Singapore to fund the celebration, and had made all payments six months ago, when the planning started. The main event of the almost-week-long celebration will be held today at sprawling venue the Bangalore Palace. Preparations for the event began months in advance, and eight Bollywood directors were reportedly hired to create sets resembling ancient Hindu temples, to form a backdrop to the ceremonies. Guests will be ferried about in luxury bullock carts and fed in a purpose-built village inside the grounds, while 3,000 bouncers and 300 policemen will ensure the event is secure, with the help of sniffer dogs and bomb squads. His political opponents also used it as an opportunity to question whether the prime minister's crackdown on illegal 'black money' would include elites. Mr Reddy was a former member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka, the state which has Bangalore as its capital. He recently spent three years in jail on corruption charges, which he denies, but was freed on bail last year.

"After discovering a mysterious photo album and meeting a handsome stranger, Amélie realizes that helping others is easier than participating in a romantic story of her own. "

19 /77 (1.02/22) 6.2 Marilyn Monroe dress could sell for $3M The beige, rhinestone- encrusted dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy is being sold by Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles on November 17.

Created by Hollywood costume designer Jean Louis, the dress sold for $1.27 million at a Christie's auction in 1999, making it the most expensive personal item of clothing ever to be sold at auction.

It's estimated to sell for up to $3 million this time around.

"(How much it will sell for) is a difficult thing to predict, but we feel it will sell for more than double of its current estimate," said Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions. "It's truly the most important artifact of Marilyn's career that could ever be sold. "

A sound investment

Monroe wore the famous dress at a 45th birthday celebration for Kennedy held at New York's Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962.

It's said the dress was so tight that she had to be sewn into it before getting on stage to sing "Happy Birthday. "

The auction will also include a number of other personal items of Monroe's, including a used tube of lipstick, jewelry, cigarettes and several other dresses, which are also expected to attract significant interest.

It's a trend not limited to her personal items, with Monroe's movie outfits also attracting huge premiums.

The white dress Monroe famously wore over a grate in "The Seven Year Itch" sold for $4.6 million in 2011, making it the most expensive dress ever sold at auction, a record it still holds today .

"In the world of investing, Marilyn Monroe has proven to be a blue chip when it comes to a secure asset," Julien said.

"Her values only continue to increase in time as it becomes more difficult to obtain items from her life or career. Also, as other markets continue to increase like Asia and Russia with technology, the fan and collector base for her items will only get stronger. "

23 /77 1.4 Jewish leaders question Schumer's push for Ellison Contact WND (0.01/22) (FREEBEACON) — Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N. Y) is facing criticism from Jewish leaders in New York over his endorsement of Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) to head the Democratic National Committee.

Schumer was pushed to support Ellison, a vocal critic of Israel, by the far- left wing of the Democratic Party. Protestors went to Schumer’s Washington, D. C., office this week calling for him to give up his leadership role to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was endorsed by Ellison during the Democratic primary.

Members of New York’s Jewish community are questioning why Schumer would push for Ellison, who has voiced his belief that Israel is an apartheid state, to have an increased role in the party, according to a CBS New York report. China pushes global Internet rules Contact WND wnd.com

24 /77 4.3 Smokey Robinson to get prestigious honor for songwriting (0.01/22) WASHINGTON, D. C. — There are plenty of reasons Smokey Robinson has remained a favorite through the years — that distinctive feathery voice, the silky stage presence, the unflappably cool demeanor.

But tonight he'll receive one of the nation's most prestigious music honors as the focus turns to the skill at the heart of it all: his songwriting.

The Detroit native will become the ninth recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, awarded by the Library of Congress to distinguish composers whose lifetime work has served “as a vehicle of musical expression and cultural understanding.”

Samuel L. Jackson will host a celebratory concert at the 2,500-seat DAR Constitution Hall, where an eclectic slate of performers — including CeeLo Green, Joe Walsh, Corinne Bailey Rae and Kip Moore — will interpret some of Robinson’s most-loved tunes. The show will be taped for nationwide broadcast Feb. 10 on PBS stations.

In honoring Robinson, the Gershwin committee is making it clear: His body of work stands among the greatest of our time. He joins a winners list that has included Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Carole King and fellow Motown giant Stevie Wonder, all honored in the name of the Gershwin brothers, the songwriting duo who helped set the course for 20th Century American music.

Recipients are chosen by the Library of Congress with input from a board of music scholars and industry professionals.

“I can’t even tell you how I feel,” Robinson said to the Free Press during a Tuesday visit to the Library of Congress. “It's surreal, it’s wonderful, it’s unbelievable. I’m being mentioned in the same breath as the Gershwins for songwriting? Wow. That’s something I never expected, that’s for sure.”

Robinson was a freshly minted Northern High School graduate when he linked up with Berry Gordy Jr. in 1958, and he remained by the Motown founder's side as the rudimentary family start-up grew into one of the world’s preeminent music operations. ► Related: Eye-popping rare photos help Motown book put new spin on classic story ►Book excerpt: 'Motown: The Sound of Young America' ► Related: Motown songwriter Robert Bateman dies at 80

"I wasn’t thinking about being here with the Gershwin award and all of that," Robinson said. "I was a teenager. I was getting a chance for my music to be heard. I could write this music, and this man was going to put my music out. "

On Tuesday, the two old friends were together again, upbeat and bright-eyed as they browsed items handpicked by curators from the Library of Congress archives. There were original pressings of vinyl records by Detroit acts such as Andre Williams, the Diablos and Barrett Strong; decades-old Detroit property books opened to maps placing Northern High and the original Hitsville headquarters; the original manuscript of the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess.”

At one point, Robinson summoned Gordy with a “Berry! Berry!” There on a table sat the original hand-sketched sheet music for their dual composition “I Cry” — Robinson’s first copyrighted song, mailed to the U. S. Copyright Office for registration in summer 1958.

After some close inspection and banter, it was settled that the ink work was Gordy’s. After all, he pointed out, he still writes his “B’s” the same way.

“It’s good to know somebody keeps that stuff … and puts it in a place where it can be kept forever and will always be there,” Robinson said later of the Library of Congress mission. “That’s just so incredible to me first of all as a person, but as a songwriter — to think that my music can be around forever, and people are storing and saving it and I don’t even know it.”

Robinson’s recording of “I Cry” with the Miracles failed to take off in '58. But it was the start of what became a vast and towering songwriting legacy. In addition to the material he penned for the Miracles (“The Tracks of My Tears,” “Shop Around,” “Going to a Go-Go”) and his solo career (“Being With You,” “Cruisin’”), he crafted a host of gems made famous by others — from Mary Wells’ “My Guy” to the Temptations’ “My Girl.”

His work has melded sugar-sweetened melodies with lyrics that are often poetically playful but coursing with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity, never afraid to explore the vulnerabilities of romantic love. It was enough to land him the enduring label (rightly or wrongly attributed to Bob Dylan) of “America’s greatest living poet.”

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden grew up with Motown music as a Chicago teenager in the ‘60s. Robinson’s repertoire, she said, resonates with the era of the Gershwins, when great songs became standards and the songwriter was king.

“His songs have that kind of quality,” she said. “There’s something about a songwriter who can create a memory in your mind with the music.”

Tonight's tribute at DAR Constitution Hall has its own built-in significance, Hayden pointed out: It's the venue where black opera singer Marian Anderson was famously barred from performing in 1939 because of her race.

At 76, Robinson remains busy, touring regularly and now tending to Skinphonic, a line of cosmetic products launched this summer with his wife, Frances Robinson, and described as "skin-healing products for people of color. " They're named, fittingly enough, after a pair of Robinson tunes. The women's line is "My Girl"; the men's is "Get Ready. " It's been seven years since he released an album of new material, but he said Tuesday that he's continuously writing, and is "anxious to get into the studio and record some of it. "

Robinson is likely to get a big kick out of tonight's concert. He has long said that few things are more satisfying than hearing his songs covered by others. When a song can be pulled off in all manner of approaches and styles, that's a testament to what he set out to achieve in the first place: to create something that can live on through the ages.

Surrounded by family and friends this week in D. C., it's been a chance for Robinson to reflect and take stock. Asked how he hopes to be remembered by history, he put the pieces in place.

"The Gershwin Award is part of the answer to that question," he said. "Because if I’m being even mentioned in the same breath with the Gershwins — whose music is everlasting — then that’s a crowning achievement for me as a songwriter. I want to be Beethoven, man. I want to be Bach, Chopin.

"Five hundred years from now, they’ll still be playing Smokey Robinson music: If possible, that’s what I want to be. So this is the first step. "

26 /77 2.6 Deep faith: Deep Ellum update brings more restaurants, bars, hope Following an impromptu tour of a new restaurant- filled project in Deep Ellum, developer Chuck Hixson dropped subtle hints that he's ready to move beyond the neighborhood's spotted history.

"I'm not going to talk about the past, I'm not going to talk about the concerns or the past," said Hixson, vice president of Westdale Real Estate Investment and Management.

On this sun-drenched morning, the pansies were in bloom and Hixson was busy exchanging smiles and handshakes with city officials and restaurateurs at a ribbon cutting for the latest development planted in Deep Ellum.

The project, Westdale's 2800 Deep Ellum, represents a mixture of city funds, developer determination, and neighborhood resilience as the community east of downtown Dallas labors toward its latest rebirth.

"We are surrounded by success," said Hixson, noting the burst of development in downtown and East Dallas. "And there will be success in this location as well. We think it's going to be successful in the future because of the new things that are happening and the [nearby] mass employment base. If you manage it smartly it's going to be a success. "

The development, which is still in its formative stage, carved nine new spaces from five existing buildings, some of them 80 years old. All are in the 2800 block of either Elm or Main streets near the corner of Malcolm X Boulevard. The total project measures 30,000 square feet.

Seven spaces already have been leased to barkeeps and restaurateurs including Cindy and Jim Hughes, owners of the popular Bread Winners chain.

Among the first locations to open will be:

-- Hide Bar (2816 Elm Street): Expected to open by early 2017, Hide will "use technology like centrifuges and vaporizers to create clear, clean cocktails and will feature ... small plates, salads, and sandwiches," according to a release from City Hall.

-- Harlowe MXM (2823 Main Street): Expected to open by late February, the Hughes' latest project will feature a seafood-inspired menu of "casual, approachable food, with a twist, for the everyday person," said Adam Kovac, executive research and development chef. The 3,200- square-foot restaurant also will have a 2,000 square foot ground-level patio facing Malcolm X and a rooftop patio with sweeping views of downtown. Across the project's central courtyard, the Hughes plan to open the bar Trick Pony, with a spirits menu that will vary throughout the year.

-- Baker and Company (2820 Elm Street): Expected to open early in 2017, the bar/restaurant will feature small plates and old-fashioned cocktails. Guests will enjoy jazz music and a 1920's theme.

-- The Table (2826 Elm Street): The first expansion of a brand launched late last year in Flower Mound, the restaurant will offer American cuisine with global influences. It also will feature craft and "pre-prohibition style" cocktails, as well as new and old-world wines and beers on tap. It's expected to open by mid-March.

The 2800 Deep Ellum offerings are among 16 spots either recently opened in the storied neighborhood or coming soon, according to the Deep Ellum Foundation.

If Deep Ellum was a cat, the life count would surely be in the double digits by now. With history and landmarks dating back to the 1800s, the renovated warehouse district has been a draw for art and music lovers since the 1920s. Sushi and tattoo parlors are equally at home and the late- night scene has given Dallas a decidedly big-city vibe.

But the area has seen its fortunes rise and fall as development moved north of downtown and fear of crime kept suburbanites and some city folks away.

Like Hixson, the latest crop of entrepreneurs is looking past old blemishes. "We've always loved Deep Ellum, before it went through it's, you know, transition," said Cindy Hughes, as guests at the event munched on Bread Winners baked goods and stepped gingerly across still-dirt floors. "So we're coming back to it from when we were younger, and enjoying all the development and all of the revitalization of the buildings. "

She said the couple was drawn by the commitment of companies like Westdale.

"People that have a love for this area are putting a lot of money into it to make it a good entertainment area for the entire city," she added. "What Westdale is doing down here is very, very good for the whole area. "

Westdale spent 15 years headquartered in Deep Ellum before moving closer to Uptown about 5 years ago, Hixson said. It's now the largest property owner in Deep Ellum, and is partnering with StreetLights Residential to build a 17-story apartment tower just south of Baylor Medical Center. The Case Building, at 3131 Main Street, is expected to open in May.

Hixson sees 2800 Deep Ellum as a public/private partnership.

"All of the underground sewer and water utility pipes that were a hundred years old were all torn out and replaced with brand new ones," said Hixson. "That alone is a massive endeavor. "

That part of the endeavor, along with improvements to the pedestrian walkways, was funded with $1.6 million in TIF (Tax Increment Financing) dollars from the city.

Hixson estimates the total cost of the project at more than $8 million, not counting funds each restaurant operator will spend to get their locations ready for showtime.

Dallas City Council member Adam Medrano, whose District 2, includes Deep Ellum, offered kudos to the developers for coming up with a vision for the neighborhood while "keeping it Deep Ellum. "

"You hear the buzz again in Deep Ellum and we're excited about it down at City Hall," he said.

The incoming restaurateurs think the improved lighting in the district and the increased police presence will help the neighborhood avoid some of the pitfalls of the past.

Hixson sees the area's improvement also as a function of more personal involvement from leading property owners, including Westdale, Madison Partners, the investment group 42 Real Estate, which has purchased more than a dozen Deep Ellum properties, and members of the property owning Cass family.

Ray Skradzinski is the former executive sous chef at Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck, perched atop Reunion Tower. Now he's chef and co-owner, along with partner Bruce Wills, of the 3,300 square foot Deep Ellum setting of Table.

As workers in hard hats continued crafting restaurant interiors, Skradzinski talked about the view of Deep Ellum from his vantage point.

"We've been looking around at a lot of different spots to open up another restaurant," he said. "We really want to hit downtown. Through all the areas we looked at, we really liked Deep Ellum for all it had to offer: the crowd that was coming here, everything that's happening here, the renovations, the new restaurants. "I've been in Dallas six years and I remember when it was pretty much empty. [Now] it has more of an Uptown feel, but with that cool, kind of Deep Ellum feel. It's got its own feel.

"So many people are moving to Dallas," he added. "I just think it's a really good place for us to put in a [near] downtown spot.... I'm really confident. I think it will do really well. "

29 /77 1.1 BET sends Obama off in style with star-studded concert With President Obama ’s admirers now looking on his departure with an extra jolt of nostalgia, BET did its best to send him off in style. On Tuesday night, the network aired a tribute concert from the White House lawn. “BET Presents: Love & Happiness: An Obama Celebration” honored the nation’s first black president in his last months in office, lightening the mood a bit for those who wish he didn’t have to go.

“There will be no twerking tonight,” Obama said.” At least not by me. I don't know about Usher.

However, many top soul, hip-hop and R&B acts did perform, including Usher, Common, Janelle Monáe, the Roots and De La Soul. Among the highlights: Common and Yolanda Adams performing the Oscar-winning “Glory” with an extra, yearning edge.

Obama seemed to acknowledge the melancholy of the occasion.

“It's with a little bit of bittersweetness that this is our final musical evening as president and first lady,” he said.

But in dark times, he added, music can spark hope and optimism.

“It's a mirror to who we are, and a reminder of who we can be. That's what American music's all about.”

31 /77 1.7 Tinder adds transgender and nonconforming options Tinder, the popular dating app, has updated its options to allow users to choose transgender or gender- nonconforming identities.

The move, part of a push against persistent harassment against transgender people on the service, was hailed by community advocates as an important example for other social media services.

Executives became aware of the harassment problem seven months ago, according to Tinder CEO Sean Rad. He said the abuse took two main forms: transgender users being verbally attacked by people they matched with, and transgender users being reported as abusive themselves by people “on the merits of who they were and not necessarily what they were saying or doing.”

Those abuse reports meant that transgender people were often blocked from the service by the site’s algorithm. “If you’re reported a certain number of times, you’re in the penalty box,” he said.

The move to let transgender users identify themselves as such is meant to let them “interact with people who are more accepting of who they are,” Rad said.

The company has taken other steps, too, including training its staff in how to deal with reports of harassment of transgender people.

The company previously allowed users to pick from one of two genders — either man or woman — but will now let them choose from almost 40 options, including Transgender Woman, Transgender Man, Transmasculine, Two-Spirit, Neutrois, Non-Binary and Other. If none of those fit, users can write in their own.

The update, released this week, was designed in consultation with transgender community leaders and other prominent transgender people, including activists Andrea James and Nick Adams and several entertainers connected to the award-winning Amazon show “Transparent,” like actress Trace Lysette , musician Our Lady J and Zackary Drucker , a producer on the show.

“Gender categories are expanding,” said Drucker, who called the update a reflection of changing social attitudes toward transgender people. “We are a part of the world, and we date.”

Drucker and James said they hoped the update would make it easier and safer for transgender people to look for love. Transgender people face far higher rates of violence than the general population, in particular transgender women of color, and James said that in romantic situations “there’s a stereotype that we are trying to deceive people.”

“Dating for trans people is generally safer via an app like Tinder,” James said. “I find it much safer to make connections online versus having a stranger approach me in a cafe or bar.”

Drucker said “disclosing one’s trans status is always stressful” because of the fear of rejection or violence. That is why some people prefer to come out as transgender via text message rather than face-to-face, she said.

“Creating a safe space where a person can swipe right or left, seems like a hassle-free and safe method of allowing trans people to exist without being shamed for their difference,” Drucker said.

Rad said the “least visible but most impactful” element of the update was one he hoped could also be used to crack down on other forms of harassment on the service, especially the sexual harassment of women. He described that goal as “ending locker room talk.”

“We completely rewrote and reworked our entire user moderation algorithm and tools,” he said. “We’re now more than ever able to detect harassment and prioritize the queue and inquiries about harassment and react very quickly to ban users who are being harassing.”

The push against harassment on Tinder comes as other social media services have struggled to respond to abuse. Twitter, in particular, has been increasingly criticized by users as a den of anti-Semitic, racist and misogynist abuse.

Drucker called the months-long project of responding to Tinder’s problem of harassment against transgender people “an example of inclusion” and said she hoped it would serve as a model for other technology companies.

Tinder is the world’s most popular dating app — it bills itself more chastely as an app “for meeting new people” — and says that 26 million new matches are made each day, for a total of 20 billion matches since it launched in 2012. As such, Rad said he thought the company had a responsibility to shield its users from vitriol.

“Part of the problem is a lot of tech platforms try to stay out of complex issues because they don’t want to alienate any of their users,” Rad said. “For us it’s very important to come in and particularly now given what’s going on in the world, with all the division in the world, it’s particularly important to step in and make a statement of inclusivity and acceptance.”

34 /77 3.1 Shaquille O’Neal dances the hora at a Jewish wedding Let’s face it: at 7-foot-1 and 350 pounds, Shaq is built to dunk. But dancing? Well, you may be surprised: This past weekend, at a Jewish wedding in Miami, the former NBA star danced the hora.

The guests of newlyweds Blair Markowitz and Corey Salter look ecstatic in a video of the momentous event, published Tuesday by TMZ. The groom’s father, Jamie Salter, works with Shaq through the Authentic Brands Group, which owns and manages his intellectual property. As the band sings “Moshiach! Moshiach!” Shaq and seemingly diminutive guests dance in a small circle, beaming. At one point, a man in a white dress shirt gives the Diesel a big hug.

Unfortunately, as TMZ points out, we didn’t learn how many Jews it takes to lift one Shaquille O’Neal — reportedly, efforts to lift him in a chair failed miserably.

35 /77 3.4 Bar Replacing World of Beer on Eighth Avenue Plans Super Bowl-Timed Opening CHELSEA — A bar and restaurant serving up “higher-end” comfort food plans to open in time to throw a Super Bowl party for the neighborhood, its owner said.

The Chelsea Bell is moving into a space at 316 Eighth Ave., between West 25th and West 26th streets, that housed a short-lived World of Beer outpost , owner Brendan Donoghue said. Though Donoghue also operates John Sullivan’s Bar and Grill and Jack Doyle’s Pub and Restaurant — both Irish pubs — on West 35th Street, the bar will focus more on “American bar comfort food,” he said. “We’re Irish-owned, but we’re not necessarily becoming an Irish bar,” he said.

The bar will more closely resemble watering holes like Jasper’s Taphouse and Kitchen and Alfie’s Bar and Kitchen in Hell’s Kitchen, serving “higher-end appetizers,” sandwiches, salads and other entrees, he said.

Televisions throughout the bar will broadcast sporting events including the Super Bowl if the restaurant opens in January as planned, he said.

Until recently, World of Beer had signs hanging in its window saying it planned to reopen after it closed in March , but Donoghue said he was finalizing the lease for the space this week.

World of Beer did not immediately respond to request for comment on Wednesday.

The Chelsea Bell will serve up craft beers, American beers, Irish beers and mixed drinks, Donoghue said.

“It’s just going to have a fun feel,” he said. “We’re really targeting people in the neighborhood.”

36 /77 0.9 Jill Bass is serenaded by Florida students dressed in pink after beating breast cancer A heartwarming video has captured the moment a Florida teacher was serenaded by her young students – all dressed in pink – when she returned to school after beating breast cancer. Jill Bass, a third-grade teacher at the Rowlett Academy for Arts and Communication in Bradenton, came back to work on Monday after five weeks off to recover from surgery. The 35-year-old was led from her classroom to the school’s courtyard by students under the pretense of taking a class picture. But instead, she was greeted with a sea of pink – the rest of the school, parents, friends, family and her four-year- old son Nathan – who waved pink pom-poms and waved signs before bursting into a rendition of Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song.’ The song, which has become an anthem for those battling cancer, was already one of her favorite songs but has now taken on a new meaning. ‘I was overwhelmed with tears in my eyes and I just couldn’t believe it,’ Bass told Inside Edition. She added: ‘I like the song anyway, and it has such a personal meaning now, even more so than it ever did before. ‘Almost every time I was at chemo, I would listen to that song just to kind of get me through.’ The idea was thought up by Linda Sheldon, another teacher at the school, who executed her plan with her colleagues. ‘She’s a pretty private person, so when we came up with this I wasn’t sure how she’d react, but it was perfect,’ she told the Bradenton Herald. Bass, who has worked at Rowlett Academy for 13 years, said that support is an integral part of the school’s culture. Nine-year-old Jade Campbell, one of her students agrees. ‘I think that our school is a very supporting school,’ she told the Herald. Bass said she’d noticed changes to her right breast in early 2015, but she ignored it. She was diagnosed in May. Knowing that she’d miss the end of the last school year and the beginning of this year for her treatments, she’d written a letter to the parents of her pupils. They were incredibly supportive, she said, and some of them made up the crowd welcoming Bass back to school. Bass says she is now cancer-free, but will have to continue undergoing chemotherapy treatments once a week. ‘The worst of it is behind me,’ she told the Herald.

37 /77 6.7 USM fundraising brings in $1.5 million in donations In a burst of successful fundraising, the University of Southern Maine has raised $1.5 million since school began, including a $600,000 gift earmarked for music student scholarships.

“It’s more than the money,” said USM President Glenn Cummings, noting that the college exceeded their $1 million goal for the 80-day fundraising campaign. “It means USM is back.”

The $600,000 is from The Bingham Trust, a private $50 million trust associated with William Bingham II, a Bethel resident who died in 1955. In September, the Bingham Trust gave $600,000 to the Portland Symphony Orchestra to pay musicians and for music education in Portland schools.

Cummings announced the $1 million fundraising effort in late August.

At the time, he announced a $500,000 gift from the Boyne Foundation to an existing scholarship program for nursing students. The foundation was created by Philip J. Boyne, a Houlton native and oral surgeon who later was a researcher and faculty member of the Loma Linda School of Dentistry in California.

On Wednesday, officials said the $1.5 million was raised from a total of 583 donors, mostly alumni.

The Bingham Trust was particularly interested in donating to the USM Music program to create endowed scholarships, in part because William Bingham II played violin.

Alan Kaschub, director of the USM School of Music, said the department has doubled its freshman class to 60 students and added three faculty members in the last year. The scholarships will range from $1,000 to $10,000 over four years, and USM will award between $25,000 and $30,000 per year, starting next year.

“I feel this incredible momentum this year,” Kaschub said. “This investment from the Bingham Trust is just what we need.”

38 /77 2.9 Orpheum Theater's 'Jambalaya, the Musical' will explore Cajun culture The unique culture of Bayou Country will strut its spicy stuff at the Orpheum Theater when the stage musical, "Jambalaya," unfurls on stage in a show created by an impressive roster of talent, including Grammy and Emmy Award winners. The musical opens its New Orleans run on Nov. 30, with performances continuing Dec. 1-3 and 21-23.

The plot is described as a "coming- of-age" tale, and a "story about love, between a girl and a boy, a man and his grandson, and a community and its love for its rich heritage and culture. "

Set in present-day Cajun country, the bayou-side tale gives audiences a peek into the Cajun culture that is fast disappearing, a world where an elder, "Boudreaux," dreams that today's youth will carry on the folkways of one of the most unique cultures of the United States.

Boudreaux's 22-year-old grandson "T" has his sights set on becoming a Nashville songwriter, and is skeptical of anything "Cajun. " He wants to leave the Bayou behind for bigger, better things. The show aims to take audiences on a ride through this multi-generational examination of the question we all face: staying put, versus moving on.

Jackie Lyle, director of marketing for "Jambalaya," said a comment made by a cast member at the production's September 8 workshop performance in Lafayette truly encapsulates the essence of the show: "It's about us. "

"This show is not a caricature, even though it's fun," Lyle said.

"It's got everything from a really fun ragtime-ish piece called 'Goin' Fishin' to hip hop, to ballads and more. "

Of course, the show will also include the region's indigenous musical styles -- Cajun and zydeco -- as local favorite Chubby Carrier, and his band, will heat things up onstage. Lyle called the show "the missing element for tourists visiting New Orleans, and is the perfect introduction of south Louisiana life for musical theater audiences. "

She added that "investors from entertainment powerhouses" attended the show's workshop and "were as impressed as I was by the reception of the audience. "

Written, directed and choreographed by Nancy Gregory -- who has developed, written and directed projects ranging from Super Bowl halftime shows to music videos to Broadway productions -- "Jambalaya" features a production slate with bonafide chops.

Grammy Award-winner and Music Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Barry, known for Billboard hits including "Chapel of Love" and "Leader of the Pack," created most of the show's music. Musical contributions also came from Grammy-winning music producer Clarence Jey, and native Louisianian and vocalist Josef Gordon.

Musical director Kennard Ramsey has film credits ranging from work on "Lincoln Heights" to "The X Files. "

Sets were designed by Lafayette native and Emmy-winner Joe Stewart, whose work has been seen on the television series "Friends," "The Ellen Degeneres Show," "Two and a Half Men" and more. Set building is by Matthew Whittle, lighting is by Brian Schneider, costumes by Neysha Perry, and stage management is by Kylen Wijayasuriya.

In a cultural landscape some would say is disappearing before our eyes, "Jambalaya, the Musical" asks the question: Should young Cajuns leave to find success elsewhere, or should they stay put in the warm embrace of a familiar culture?

The show is 90 minutes in length, with no intermission. Performances dates are Nov. 30 and Dec. 1-3 and 21-23 at 8 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre, 129 Roosevelt Way, New Orleans. Ticket prices range from $24.95 to $64.95 and are available for purchase by visiting Orpheumnola.com or by calling the box office at 504.274.4870.

39 /77 4.3 Concert review: With fan-favorites and new songs, Ani DiFranco brought a message of political might Singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco has enjoyed a loyal following in Portland since the 1990s, when her albums such as “Dilate” and “Like I Said: Songs 1990-91” were dorm room staples across the Northeast and beyond. Any time she returns in a high-profile gig, it’s a cause for celebration. In the wake of the recent election, it’s bigger than that.

Her fan base is likely about 99 percent liberal, with a 1 percent margin for error. And so, in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory last week and the threat it may pose women’s rights, the concert was part comfort food, part catharsis, and part call to action.

WHAT: Ani DiFranco

WHERE: State Theatre REVIEWED: Nov. 15, 2016

If you share DiFranco’s political beliefs, it can be a cynical time. But there is no time for cynicism in her music or performance. She played a brisk set full of fan-favorites old and new, and came across like she always has: beaming with joy, working the stage like a coiled spring, letting words flow in an acrobatic cadence, flashing dexterous guitar skill that was underrated even when she was at her mainstream peak.

She’s fallen out of favor in the music press in part by staying around too long, but also by adhering to parameters that are rarely considered cool — abject sincerity, unapologetic political content, a sometimes uncomfortable directness — despite the fact that she’s influenced everything from 1990s emo to modern indie-rock, succeeded as a DIY businesswomen in the pre-Internet era, and married punk-rock and personal folk in ways that still resound. There was never anyone like her before, and there still isn’t anyone like her.

She tackles subjects that are more rare in music than one might think, such as devoted friendship, sharing with the crowd one of her finest such songs in “If He Tries Anything,” before a request for unity in “Subdivision” and the showstopping crescendo of “Swan Dive.” For older fans, the once-intense personal attachment to songs such as “Anticipate” conjured emotional experiences in concert, like seeing a photograph of yourself in an old haircut, but her songs are somehow both time-specific and evergreen. She performed a spoken word piece written so long ago that it contains the word “stewardesses,” yet its message about America’s historical fusion of activism and patriotism felt as pointed as ever.

Those 1990s fans have grown up. Many have had children, and DiFranco spoke of her own daughter. But this was not a nostalgia tour. In spite of being ignored by contemporary music media, younger audiences seem to have found her; perhaps her music is still a rite of passage for some. The audience still skews feminine to an overwhelming degree, even moreso than it did in the 1990s, but it made for a highly agreeable, relaxing, effervescent environment. In an era when the term “safe spaces” has become part of mainstream lexicon, this concert embodied the concept. There is something uncommonly moving about seeing three generations of women who are out-of-their-mind excited to hear a song such as the rousing “Shameless.”

During one of many breaks in the music to discuss politics, DiFranco opined about how she doesn’t like the fact that voting is framed as “making your voice heard.” She sees it as something that has nothing to do with ego. “I’m not expressing myself,” she said. “I’m being accountable to the collective.” Despite the personal nature of many of her songs, it’s clear that she takes the same approach to playing an acoustic guitar and singing on stage.

40 /77 1.5 Google now lets G Suite customers make custom templates for Docs, Sheets, and Slides Google today is announcing a new capability for organizations that pay for its G Suite cloud service portfolio, which includes the likes of Gmail and Google Docs. Now it will be possible for approved customers to add customized templates for Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Google introduced templates for those apps last year. Now, G Suite customers will be able to add their own in a category that’s separate from the standard-issue templates.

“With these customizable templates, your teams can focus less on formatting and more on driving impact and sharing success,” G Suite product manager Brian Levee wrote in a blog post. Certain types of G Suite customers — those that subscribe to G Suite for Business and G Suite for Education editions — can only allow templates to be rolled out to all end users after they have been approved., Levee wrote.

Google looked to partners to add templates to Docs, Sheets, and Slides earlier this year. Today’s enhancement could make the cloud applications less anonymous.

People have been able to make custom templates in Microsoft’s Office applications for many years. Now Google is making it easy to deploy templates across organizations.

G Suite was previously known as Google Apps for Work.

41 /77 2.3 Piers Morgan labels X Factor's Honey G 'grotesque and diabolical' She told her haters to 'back down or get smacked down' last week. And controversial X Factor contestant Honey G looked defiant as she arrived at rehearsals at Studio 54 in London on Wednesday, in light of fresh criticism from Piers Morgan. The rapper, 35 - real name Anna Georgette Gilford - looked in typically high spirits, in spite of the Good Morning Britain host, 51, branding her 'grotesque' and 'diabolical'. Scroll down for video The aspiring musician was comfortably clad in a zipped grey hooded jacket, Adidas joggers and thick black padded jacket. Honey carried her essentials in an oversized sports bag, while donning her trademark shades and cap. Working the camera with a series of animated poses, the divisive act looked as if she didn't have a care in the world despite Piers' views on her. Speaking to Digital Spy this week, Piers said: 'She is uniquely diabolical. I have never seen a worse act on The X Factor or any talent show! 'If I had been on that panel, I would have buzzed her off in about three seconds. The fact that she is still there is grotesque. She is showing no sign of improvement.' Piers also said he wanted to give the judges a 'reality check' and felt the need to come in as a 'guest judge' to help give her the boot. The emerging star has divided the nation, with some X Factor fans even hailing her as the hot favourite to win the series. The north London native was showered with praise after her Sunday night rendition of Bee Gees' Staying Alive. 'You are genius. You give it a 100 per cent', head judge Simon Cowell gushed. 'I never heard you complain or whinge. 'You are the most unique contestant I've ever had on this show!' Honey dodged the bottom two yet again on Sunday, while popular act Sam Lavery was given the boot, leaving fans raging. However, Sam stuck up for her fellow contestant on ITV's This Morning on Monday, confessing to Rylan Clarke: 'She works really hard.' Meanwhile, the outspoken contestant isn't taking any prisoners as she recently took a swipe at Little Mix's Jesy Nelson. Jesy branded Honey 'an actress' earlier in the week, and the wannabe rapper retaliated by telling The Sun: 'These people saying this sort of stuff they don’t know who they’re messing with. Back down or get smacked down.' Earlier this week, she told GetWestLondon that her critics should 'get their facts right' and that she comes from a musical family. 'Anyone who is saying I am a joke don't know I have a 2:1 degree in music technology and production. 'I come from a musical background. People haven't done their homework on me.' She has also been sure to remind people that the likes of 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg have backed her.

43 /77 0.0 Country music parody shows Vladimir Putin as alpha male and Trump as his sidekick A hilarious new video believed to be from Russia portrays strongman Vladimir Putin as the unmistakable leader in his relationship with Donald Trump. Packed with clips of the Kremlin tsar's macho stunts, its lyrics warn: 'Don't you ever try to mess with Mr Putin, he might just try and whip your ass.' Entitled Rootin' Tootin' Putin, it has gone viral on the internet, offering a wacky but possibly prescient glimpse into the 'friendship' between the leaders of the two Cold War superpowers. Scroll down for video Trump is shown dancing with glamorous women, and wrestling a man to the ground, but appears to be the subservient figure in the relationship. Especially so in the final shot when Putin leans over to ruffle the president-to-be's bouffant hair. The lyrics make clear Putin is the 'solid man' with 'balls' who 'fights bears and demons with just bare hands'. The 2 minute 53 second video is interspersed with action man Putin in his macho pursuits of fishing, paragliding, swimming butterfly in a Siberian river, playing ice hockey, and flooring a judo foe. Putin and Trump are shown together in the Russian's leader's private gym at his Sochi residence - with Putin, 64, portrayed as more virile than Trump, 70. The can-do Russian leader is also shown stroking a leopard and playing the piano, and implies that Americans should be jealous of Russia's president. The lyrics read: 'One good old boy out there deserve some respect. Rootin' Tootin' Putin rolling down the highway in a shiny black Mercedes Benz. 'Don't you ever try to mess with Mr Putin. He might just whip your ass. 'Yeah Rootin' Tootin' Putin. It was his country standing strong when it calls. 'He don't bend down, the guy got some balls.' It hit the web after the US president-elect and Putin held their first telephone talks. Some Hillary Clinton supporters have accused Putin of interfering in the US election, by deploying his Red Army of hackers to reveal her emails. There are also claims that contacts between Putin's circle and Trump's team before the election went far deeper than has been acknowledged. The video opens with a campaign clip from Trump demanding an end to the icy relations between Washington and Moscow under Barack Obama. 'Wouldn't it be great if we actually got along with Russia?' he asked. 'am I wrong in saying that? Wouldn't it be great?' The author of the Rootin' Tootin' Putin video was revealed today as young Trump lookalike Rodin Yudanov, 30, a Moscow musician. He calls the viral video 'my modest vocal and instrumental debut' and claims he has an American collaborator who wishes 'to remain anonymous'. But in one online posting he expresses thanks to American singer Charles Register. Yudanov trained as a sound engineer at Litovchin Institute of TV and Radio Broadcasting.

In addition, Doute stopped dating James Kennedy, and she’s finally finding her place in a new world. Last year, Kristen met Brian Carter, and the two have been dating for about a year and a half. They have an apartment in Los Angeles, and Doute revealed that she loves being in a relationship where things are equal. In her previous relationship, Kristen would pay for everything, and James would treat her like a credit card. 48 /77 3.7 Le Pen says "world peace" would gain from a Trump-Putin- Le Pen trio PARIS, Nov 16 (Reuters) - French far-right party leader Marine Le Pen said on Wednesday that her election as president next year would form a trio of world leaders with U. S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin that "would be good for world peace. " Inaugurating her campaign headquarters for France's 2017 election, just less than two km (one mile) away from the Elysee presidential palace, Le Pen said the premises were "a stopover on the way to (her) final destination down the road. " Anti-Europe and anti-immigration, the 48-year-old Le Pen was the only French political leader who backed Trump in the U. S. election. Her National Front party has been buoyed by his victory and that of Britain's vote to leave the European Union, hoping to ride a similar anti-establishment wave in France to victory in next year's poll. "There is a worldwide movement. A worldwide movement which rejects unchecked globalisation, destructive ultra-liberalism... the elimination of nation states, the disappearance of borders," Le Pen told reporters. "The forces at work in these various elections are ideas, forces which could bring about my election as the president of France next May. " Opinion polls see Le Pen making it to the second round of the April and May presidential election but losing that run-off to a mainstream candidate from the centre-right. But pollsters' failure to predict Trump's win or Britain's vote in June to leave the EU have cast doubt on how reliable election predictions are. Asked if she would be next to prove pollsters wrong and form a trio of leaders with Russia's Putin, who has drawn fire from European leaders for backing the Syrian government against Western-backed rebels in Aleppo, and Trump, who like her has tapped anti-immigrant sentiment to gain popularity, Le Pen told reporters: "That would be good for world peace. " "If I am president, France would have good relations with Russia," she said. Le Pen says she would re-instate border-checks with France's neighbours and hold a referendum to take the country out of the Eu. Her campaign poster, unveiled on Wednesday, shows a symbol of a blue rose with the words "Marine President. " The campaign's slogan is: "In the name of the people. " In a move to soften the image of the party, once ruled by her maverick father Jean-Marie Le Pen, and try to broaden its appeal beyond grassroots supporters, the party's name did not figure on the poster nor did the trademark flame logo or even her family name. 50 /77 1.1 In galaxy far away, Princess Leia and Han Solo had real-life romance NEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters) - A long time ago, and in a galaxy far, far away, actress Carrie Fisher had an affair with her "Star Wars" co-star Harrison Ford, she said. Fisher spilled her 40-year secret to People magazine this week while promoting her memoir, "The Princess Diarist," which goes on sale on Tuesday. The book is based on Fisher's diaries from the time and is billed as telling behind-the-scene stories of the first "Star Wars" movie. Fisher said the three-month affair started, and ended, during the filming in 1976 of "Star Wars: A New Hope," in which she played Princess Leia to Ford's romantic, maverick hero Han Solo. "It was so intense," Fisher, now 60, told People on Tuesday. "It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend. " Harrison, who at the time was married to his first wife, Mary Marquadt, did not respond to requests for comment. Fisher said the "Indiana Jones" actor, who is known for guarding his personal life, had received an advance draft of her book. Fisher and Ford reprised their roles last year for the new blockbuster movie "Star Wars: The Force Awakens. " Back in 1976, Fisher said the pair spent their first night together following a birthday party for "Star Wars" creator and director George Lucas. She was 19, and Ford was 33. "I looked over at Harrison," she wrote in the memoir, according to excerpts published by People. "A hero's face - a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow. "How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me? I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind. " Fisher said she had never spoken of the affair for 40 years but felt the time for secrecy was over. "Harrison's very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time," she told People. "How much longer could I wait? " (Reporting by Jill Serjeant; Editing by Lisa Von Ahn)

51 /77 3.1 Agreement calls for dam removal, fish passage on Presumpscot in Westbrook Sappi Fine Paper has agreed to remove dams and improve fish passage along the Presumpscot River in Westbrook under an agreement between the manufacturer, conservation organizations and federal agencies. The agreement, which is still subject to final approval from regulators as well as Sappi’s board of directors, will reopen a stretch of river in one of Maine’s most heavily populated areas.

The proposal calls for removing spillways or headwalls on either side of an island at Upper Saccarappa Falls and installation of a fish-passage system around the Lower Saccarappa Falls. The changes are aimed at improving access to the upper river for sea-run fish such as river herring, American shad and Atlantic salmon.

As part of the agreement, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will modify the fish passage requirements at the next four upstream dams owned by Sappi. Federal licensing for two of the upper dams has been extended as part of the negotiations.

Parties to the agreement include Sappi, USFWS, the Maine Department of Marine Resources, Friends of the Presumpscot River, Conservation Law Foundation and the city of Westbrook.

“After engaging in three years of negotiations with Sappi, other parties and our partner Conservation Law Foundation, this settlement agreement will result in vast improvements for our river,” Michael Shaughnessy, president of Friends of the Presumpscot River, said in a statement. “It is an agreement we can all be very proud of. When the dams are removed and fish passage finally constructed, we will have a wonderful result for the river and for the people who live in the Presumpscot’s watershed.”

52 /77 2.6 Watch: Anna Kendrick sings Sondheim’s most exhausted survival anthem, “I’m Still Here” Traditionally, whenever Anna Kendrick hits on a press tour, she and fellow musical theater obsessive Stephen Colbert will nerd out about Stephen Sondheim and then sing some show tunes together. But when Kendrick visited on Tuesday to promote her new book, , Colbert explained that he hadn’t had a chance to learn a song to sing with her. “I’ve been a little busy in a mild panic about the election,” he said. “2016’s been kind of a bitch,” Kendrick agreed. So she went solo with one of Sondheim’s classic diva songs: “I’m Still Here,” from. The song is about surviving America in the first half of the 20th century — bread lines, the red scare, and so on — and at the end, the singer concludes that the best she can say for herself is that she’s still alive. ; so did , and Barbra Streisand liked it so much that she had Sondheim write her . “I’m Still Here” is at once rebellious and hopeful and cynical and exhausted, which makes it a perfect fit for the feelings many progressives have in the wake of the election. “It just makes me feel empowered,” Kendrick said, “and like we’ve been through it but we can get through it.” And when she sings, “I got through all of last year, and I’m here,” it feels like one of the most hopeful things you can say at the end of 2016.

54 /77 5.9 Bluegrass music is part of Mooresville church’s program Shearer Presbyterian Church in Mooresville has an event for you -- if you’re a fan of bluegrass music. The first Saturday night of every month, except December and July, at 7 p.m. the church presents Mooresville Bluegrass.

The free, family-friendly show doesn’t allow cussing or drinking, but encourages foot stomping to the bluegrass beat -- after a short gospel lesson. Church Elder David Christian took an idea he saw at another church in South Carolina and tweaked it to fit his church.

Even though the events have led to only a few regular visitors coming to Sunday morning worship, Pastor Steve Stout said, “We want it to be a community function, an outreach to invite others to attend our church.”

“We’re kind of a redneck church, a country church, started by the president of Davidson College ... in 1880,” he said.

Each Bluegrass event draws 100-175 people, with about one third being church members, Stout said.

The church has about 150 regular members and Stout would like for people to know, “If you like bluegrass, here is a nice, friendly place to come. Even if you don’t like bluegrass, this is a nice, friendly place to come.”

For each performance Christian mans the sound mixer and light controls. On Nov. 5 Christian played a gospel message on the projection screen before the Woods Family Tradition band took the stage.

The Statesville band plays bluegrass, gospel and country music. They recorded their first CD in Jan. 2015. They started the recent show with familiar songs, then added some of their original songs.

Mackenzie Wood left the stage as her husband Jason Wood, Jason’s father Mike, Jason’s uncle Bobby, and banjo player Chris Bryant performed “No More Goodbyes,” which was written by Mike.

Later Mackenzie would be the star as they sang her song, “The Likes Of You,” a comical bluegrass offering about her daddy's attitude towards boys who wanted to date her and her sister. Mixed between the songs were jokes and banter among the musicians.

The group also performed country songs including “Once A Day” and “Coat of Many Colors.” The concert also included bluegrass gospel -- “Let Me Tell You About Jesus, He Loves Us So. The Mooresville Bluegrass event, started in January 2016 and will continue with Darin Martin on Jan. 7 of 2017.

“We have a waiting list of about 30 bands, so each band will only get to play here once every few years,” Christian said.

57 /77 57 /77 1.5 Top figure at pioneering Chinese financial magazine resigns from corporate roles Wang Boming, the man who helped launch the mainland’s stock market in the early 1990s and went on to run one of the country’s most influential financial magazines for nearly two decades, has resigned from his corporate positions. The Hong Kong- listed SEEC Media Group, which owns the investigative magazine , confirmed yesterday Wang had resigned as a chairman and executive director of the company due to his “other business engagements”. He is still listed as editor-in-chief on the masthead of the magazine’s most recent issue. Wang’s departure, along with the silencing of several outspoken mainland media outlets recently, could be a sign of an increasinglyinsulatedChinese society, according to Hu Xingdou, an economics professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology. “ magazine played a very important role in China by providing lots of independent reporting ... Some... might have hurt vested interest groups in the past,” Hu said. The changes in the magazine’s staff “may be connected to China’s increasing reluctance to accept foreign things such as media independence, especially in social governance”, he said. Wang, the son of a former deputy foreign minister, was part of a pro-reform group that was instrumental in creating the Stock Exchange Executive Council in the 1980s. Many of his colleagues from that time went on to become key decision-makers, including Wang Qishan, now the Communist Party’s discipline tsar. After the United States and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic ties in 1979, Wang was among a privileged few mainlanders to study in the US. He studied finance at Columbia University and was working at the New York Stock Exchange on Black Monday, the October 19 crash in 1987. One day in 1988, Wang and Gao Xiqing, a lawyer in New York who became deputy chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, were talking in front of the New York Federal Reserve Bank and decided to return to the mainland to launch its stock exchange, mainland reports said. Wang went on to found in 1992 and in 1998. With Hu Shuli, one of the most respected journalists in the country, overseeing the newsroom, quickly won fame with a series of investigative reports about corporate fraud and misuse of power. It became a flagship publication with wide social influence. Hu Shuli continued to push media boundaries, which put her at odds with the publisher. She eventually quit , taking most of its newsroom staff with her to launch magazine in 2009. The SEEC remains influential with strong networks in business and the public sector. Frequent guests of the Caijing annual conference include top policymakers such as central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan.

58 /77 0.0 Quick tips: Finding a job in the cannabis industry With Proposition 64’s passage and an expected explosion in the cannabis industry in California, you may be considering a career change to work at a dispensary , with a marijuana grower or in one of the many industries that will be serving cannabis-related businesses.

Here’s some advice from Julie LaCroix, a career counselor based in Newport Beach, and Juliet Murphy, an executive career coach in Tustin.

• Educate yourself on the legislation and regulations that impact the industry and stay up to date on changes.

• Join a professional association such as the National Cannabis Industry Association or Women Grow .

• Treat it as a legitimate industry. For managers, that might mean using traditional employment sites to recruit. For workers, that means being professional.

• Don’t get in it for the money. As with any job, there has to be a passion there, either for medical marijuana itself or for the particular career you’re pursuing in the industry.

• Focus on developing skills and relationships and providing value to your employer rather than simply knowing the product and market. These will transfer if the volatile industry flips or if you decide to move away from marijuana down the road.

• Be aware of the stigma, and how working in the industry might impact your status in the larger workforce. If status is something you value, that might be problematic due to the stigma that still exists over the marijuana industry.

• But don’t let fear of that stigma stop you if you’re passionate about this industry. Many other industries – from alcohol to mortgage banks – also carry some stigmas. But people manage to move in and out of these industries every day.

• Realize that industry experience is a bonus, but bringing the right skill set is more important. So even if you’ve never worked in marijuana, your experience as an account manager or security guard can apply.

60 /77 2.1 In valedictory speech, Obama takes note of values he sought in office On a farewell trip to Europe, Obama tried to reassure allies that core U. S. priorities, including a commitment to the NATO military alliance, would continue under Trump, despite the New York businessman's campaign trail statements that called that commitment into question.

Obama portrayed the United States as an example of democracies prizing the peaceful transfer of power, even when ideas between the incoming and outgoing leaders are opposed.

"The next American president and I could not be more different," he said to an audience in Athens. "We have very different points of view, but American democracy is bigger than any one person. "

Obama took care of some local business in his speech. He urged creditors to help Greece dig out of its mountain of debt and called on young people to stay in the country to spur its economic recovery.

But his broader message extended beyond Athens.

Step-by-step, Obama listed the values of U. S. democracy that he and fellow Democrats in the United States have accused Trump of violating during his presidential campaign, an implicit call on his successor to change course.

In the same way that democracies are based on the peaceful resolution of disagreements within society, so cooperation is the best way to resolve conflicts with nations, he said.

"That's how with diplomacy we were able to shut down Iran's nuclear weapons program without firing a shot (and) with diplomacy the United States opened relations with Cuba," Obama said, referring to two important milestones of his presidency.

He noted how U. S. democracy had evolved to provide rights to women, African Americans, people with disabilities, and the gay community.

Trump has been criticized for his attitudes toward women and for making fun of a disabled reporter. He has pledged to ban Muslims temporarily from entering the United States and to deport undocumented immigrants who are living in the country illegally.

Democracy is why the United States welcomes "people of all races, and all religions and all backgrounds and immigrants who strive to give their children a better life," Obama said.

"Our democracies show that we are stronger than terrorists, fundamentalists and absolutists, who can't tolerate difference.

"Democracy is stronger than organizations like ISIS," he said, using one of the names for Islamic State.

"Because our democracies are inclusive, we are able to welcome people, and refugees in need, to our countries. And nowhere have we seen that compassion more evident than here in Greece," he said, referring to the Greek response to Europe's migrant crisis.

Obama highlighted the importance of a free press to expose injustice. Trump banned certain news outlets from his campaign events for writing stories he did not like. The Obama administration has been criticized for its record on press freedom as well, particularly for prosecuting government sources who leak information to journalists.

In his speech, Obama highlighted the importance of an independent judiciary to uphold the rule of law. During his campaign, Trump accused a U. S. judge of not being able to be impartial because of his Mexican heritage.

Obama also noted that elections hold leaders accountable.

"Any action by a president or any result of an election or any legislation that is proven flawed can be corrected through the process of democracy," he said. (Additional reporting by Renee Maltezou and Karolina Tagaris and Michele Kambas in Athens Editing by Jeremy Gaunt)

62 /77 2.4 EXCLUSIVE: Ja Rule explains why he's ready to move on from music after his next album By: Gibson Johns

Ja Rule is almost ready to put his music career to rest. The iconic rapper revealed earlier this year that his next album, Coup de Grâce -- which literally means "final blow" -- will be his last. Though his musical output has slowed over the last decade or so, the Queens native's announcement still came as a shock to the hip-hop community. After all, this is a man who had scored three No. 1 records and five other Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, in addition to two No. 1 albums. His collaborations with Ashanti ("Mesmerize," "Always On Time") and J. Lo (the Murder Remixes of "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny"), which mixed his signature rasp with their smooth vocals, are bonafide classics.

So, what gives? Is Ja Rule really about to ride off into the sunset at the age of 40 and call it quits? Not quite.

SEE ALSO: Hilary Duff talks 'Younger,' her music career and pleasing her eager fans

When I caught up with Ja Rule exclusively on the set of his commercial for Foot Locker's annual Week of Greatness campaign, he was clear to point out that his career itself is nowhere done -- he's just channeling his creative energy in directions other than music. Once he realized that other artists has taken his spot as radio's go-to rapper, Ja Rule made a major realization that changed how he thought about himself and the potential of his career.

Similarly to Jay-Z and Diddy, instead of simply making music, Ja Rule wants to "push the culture [of hip-hop] forward" in ways that go beyond just beats and rhymes: He wants to invent and invest and "change the world. " That, he says, is how you solidify your legacy.

In his spot for Foot Locker, Ja Rule references "sustained greatness" and says that "one minute you're on top of the world, and the next it's all gone. " And, though he's hit a few bumps in the road, Ja Rule is making his way back to the top of the world. He should know -- he's already been there.

I talked to Ja Rule in between takes of his commercial shoot to talk about his nearly two-decade career, his eighth and final album, his Week of Greatness campaign, and what he has planned outside of music.

Check out the premiere of Ja Rule's Foot Locker commercial and my full conversation with Ja Rule below:

See photos of Ja Rule throughout his career:

You're on a break from filming your commercial for Foot Locker in which you sort of poke fun at yourself. What did you think of the spot's concept when they first approached you about it?

When it came to the idea, I went over the script and thought it was brilliant. People are scared to tackle and touch these kinds of commercials sometimes, because it's poking fun of yourself. But if you can't make fun of yourself then what's the point? I really enjoyed the script and said I would definitely be part of it. The commercial is promoting Foot Locker's Week of Greatness, an annual shopping initiative. What does the Week of Greatness mean to you?

My take on it is that it's about being great and sustaining greatness over a long period of time, which is very tough to do. In this business you go through ups and downs, heartaches and whatever, but it's all about -- as they say in football when you're a running back -- you've got to keep your feet moving. So, when those roadblocks come, it's up to you as an individual to have tunnel vision and see past them and know how to navigate through them to get to that goal. For me, as an artist, that's been my challenge throughout my career: How do I reinvent myself, while keeping the greatness that I had when I started?

When I got the spot, I said, "This is perfect, because I have a lot of great things going on now, and this would be a perfect time to poke fun at my career. "

And Foot Locker is known for these kind of light-hearted, self-referential commercials. It must be fun to be part of that legacy.

Absolutely. I'm doing this slot with these other two greats, [Tom Brady and Carmelo Anthony], as well. It's all fun.

You mentioned the ups and downs of your career, which have all been leading to your next album, which you've said is going to be your last. What's the status on that project?

I'm working on it, but I'm not in a rush. It's so funny: I invented something, and I want to do my whole album with my new invention to show the world how great this invention actually is. I'll have my invention in February, so I'm probably going to start start working on the album around then. I've got about three or four songs that I've done already.

The album is called Coup de Grâce. Anybody that knows me knows that I like having titles that are a little different, from Venni Vetti Vecci to Coup de Grâce. I think it's a full circle for me. The meaning of Coup de Grâce is "final blow," and this is my last album. Venni Vetti Vecci was "he came, he saw, he conquered," so that was kind of like my intro. That's the full circle.

Definitely, and that circle started in 1999 and into the early 2000s when you had this incredible string of hits from "Mesmerize" and "Always On Time" with Ashanti to the Murder Remixes of "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" with Jennifer Lopez, as well as "Put It On Me," among others. What are some moments that really stick out to you from that time in your career?

You know, everyone always asks me that question, and I always tell them, you know, I forget some of the things I've done between the beginning and now. And I'm talking about the things that people think you could never forget: The accolades, which album or singles went No. 1. I forget that stuff! It's cool, because it shows that those things are not the most important to me. The most important thing about what I do as an artist, for me, is the creativity of it all. It's being able to take something that sparked in my brain and put it out into the world and seeing that fans share the same happiness that I did when I thought of it.

For them to also have a feeling, now, of nostalgia when they hear these records and for the songs to bring them back to a time when they were younger and having a good time, that's what it's all about. That's why we do what we do. For me, it's all about the journey: That's what you never forget. You'll never forget those times when it was five of us sleeping in a hotel room with two beds and all of us in the studio that was no bigger than the front of this bus and rhyming over a microphone with a stocking over it. Those are things I never forget, because that's the journey. It's that hard work that makes it all worth it.

Me and [DMX] talk about this a lot: Artists came up behind us and didn't really have to go through that struggle with us -- though they probably went through their own struggles -- but when they got with us and our team, and we had already gone through our struggles and our things, it kind of felt like smooth sailing for other artists. They got their own rooms and five-star treatment straight out the gate. Again, I'm sure they had their own struggles that I just didn't get to witness. We all have our stories.

You've talked about that creative output continuing, but not necessarily in the direction of music. Why do you think your creative focus has shifted so much towards endeavors outside of music?

I'm more into creating things that are gonna further my legacy. I can't make records forever and be looked upon as one of the greatest artists in the game. People look at Jay and Diddy and they look at the contributions they've made to hip-hop: It's not just about the actual songs and the music -- which was also great -- but it's also about the contributions they've made to hip-hop that have continued to push the culture forward. I think those things are very important.

I'm in the midst of creating and bringing other exciting things to the world and to the culture, so that's fun for me now. I'm forty years old, and I enjoy sitting with a team of guys who are very smart and putting together different things that I feel are going to change the world.

It must be nice to have that option to go in whatever direction you choose. You've already built and sustained the platform, so now you have a choice of what to do with it at this point in your career.

It's cool. It doesn't hurt to be able to have that luxury to be able to go and do other things while still being able to feed your family. That was the one thing that made me say, "I want to do other things besides music. "

This whole commercial is about exactly that: Sustaining greatness. Music is subjective: You don't have to like Ja Rule, you don't have to like Jay-Z, you don't have to like Beyonce. You do like them, but you don't have to. And when you think about tech or Instagram or Twitter, everybody uses them and they like them because they aren't things that you judge. They're useful to you so you use them. That intrigued me more, you know?

It's like the commercial says: One day you're on top of the world, and the next [ Snaps fingers ] just like that people are like, "Well, I don't like Ja Rule anymore! " You're like, "What the f-ck did I do? " I decided at that moment -- when that happened to me and people were not in favor of Ja Rule just because some a--hole says to not like me anymore -- I said, "You know what? As much as I love music, I can't base my livelihood and how I feed my family and my children on a business that is so subjective. " So, I set out to do a couple of other things and invested in a few companies. I understand that this can't last forever.

64 /77 3.2 A guided tour of 10 'Hallelujah' Leonard Cohen covers NEW YORK (AP) — A happy Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen. The Canadian chanteur's most famous song bubbled into the collective conscious after he died Nov. 7 at 82. Of course, Cohen did it best, having spent five years on multiple drafts before its debut in 1984, but which artist among more than 300 covers deserves props? Our Top 10: _____ JEFF BUCKLEY Buckley's death by drowning at 27 lends a mournful legacy to his trance-like "Hallelujah" as he delicately plays electric guitar. He didn't copy Cohen's original dirge. In haunting falsetto, Buckley drew out the H word comprising the chorus longer than most could even attempt, and he shouts it angrily at the end of a video version that casts him in shadowy close ups. Like Cohen's "Hallelujah" on his album "Various Positions," Buckley's cover was not an instant hit. Buckley put it on his one and only full album, "Grace," in 1994. He released it as a single in 1997. This "Hallelujah" has made it onto several lists of all-time great songs. _____ JOHN CALE He did it at the piano — for the first time in 1991 on a Cohen tribute album. It took on a life of its own as the one to cover. Buckley was inspired by Cale, who reportedly asked Cohen to provide him with the lyrics after hearing Cohen sing it live using words Cohen had never put on a record. For his trouble, Cale received 15 pages by fax. Cohen himself was moved to vibe on Cale's slant when he toured in 2008-09. Full throated, sticking to a simple, consistent chord structure, Cale sings and plays as accessible balladeer, neither scary nor chanty. Where did hope go? Right here. _____ ALEXANDRA BURKE She belted it as a goddess in a sparkly gold dress during her winning season on the U. K. version of "The X Factor" in 2008. Some Buckley fans criticized the show's version as too commercial. Say what? She nailed it. Yes, it's mainstream and she took it to church, but she had the chops and used them. Perhaps the chorus of backup singers in white, palms turned up to the heavens, was a bit much. _____ ED SHEERAN It was 2011. It was the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. There was a mic echo that could have been made to order for Sheeran's slow, slightly mournful "Hallelujah. " His natural, slight rasp helped, too. He kept it simple, save one attempt at the end to go full Buckley with a dramatically drawn-out note. Sheeran didn't quite make it, his voice breaking, but it's part of the charm because, well, it's Ed Sheeran. _____ K. D. LANG Sometimes, "Hallelujah" owns the performer. No way for k.d. lang, Cohen's fellow Canadian. She earned a standing O at the 2005 Juno Awards in Winnipeg for the song. Starting next to a piano, accompanied by a string orchestra, she paced the stage barefoot. Midway, her hallelujahs were fit and strong, then she'd pull back, almost speaking the word. At other times, she bent into the chorus, opening up her voice to its deepest depths. Defiantly, lang forms a "hand gun" with two fingers and a thumb as she sang one verse: "All I ever learned from love is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya. " The song became a lang crowd pleaser at special events. _____ JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND MATT MORRIS You had me at Justin at the piano, in hipster hat. The fact is, dude can sing. As can his duet partner and fellow Mickey Mouse alum Morris at the 2010 "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon for survivors of that year's earthquake there. Charlie Sexton and Dave Preston were on guitars and Jon Powers was on drums. They take it slow, sweet and sometimes somber. Timberlake deftly changes registers as he extends a hallelujah to close. _____ JON BON JOVI The band finished up the North American leg of their Lost Highway Tour at Madison Square Garden. Jon plays rock god on "Hallelujah," bearing his chest in short rolled shirt sleeves, reaching for the crowd as he emotes with his hands. He looks skyward, tightly grasping the mic accompanied by a violin. At another point he extends his arms into a cross. And he, too, reaches for his finger gun at "outdrew ya. " _____ RUFUS WAINWRIGHT In the annals of bizarro "Hallelujah" renditions, Wainwright led a chorus of 1,500 singers invited in June to a huge old generating station in Toronto as part of the Luminato Festival. It was a Choir! Choir! Choir! session. What, you ask, is that? It's an open-participation choir in Toronto. Anyhoo, there was Wainwright, who had done "Hallelujah" before, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, standing on a stage in front of the mass of choir people. Some wore little paper birthday hats and most held paper sheets of lyrics handed out. The crowd swayed. They oohed at the right times, led by a choir director. It was strangely but compellingly epic. _____ REGINA SPEKTOR She sounds like the ultimate anguished angel in a 2005 version. Her voice swoops from whispers to laments as she duets with deep, mournful strings. _____ BOB DYLAN He sang it in classic gravelly Dylan fashion in 1988 in Cohen's hometown of Montreal. He spit out "What's it to ya" and got in some nice prolonged hallelujahs, with tight electric guitar and a grateful crowd at the Montreal Forum. Cohen said in a 1985 interview that he sang bits of "Hallelujah" to Dylan after a Paris concert and he especially liked this verse: "And even though it all went wrong I stand before the Lord of song With nothing on my lips but hallelujah. "

65 /77 65 /77 2.0 Kate Middleton Reportedly ‘Delighted’ About Prince Harry’s New Love, Harry Calls For Respect Of Relationship Prince Harry Confirms He Is Dating Meghan Markle as He Defends Her from Racist, Sexis https://t.co/eQnbdJqtE5

— Becky Messer (@MesserBecky) November 16, 2016

The Duchess is reported to be “thrilled” over the blossoming relationship, according to a royal source.

“Kate is thrilled that Harry has finally found a girlfriend who looks like being a keeper.”

Even though there has been talk about a rivalry between Kate and Meghan, sources state that the Duchess actually makes quite a good role model for Markle in regard to handling the media attention that comes when dating royalty. It’s being reported that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge likely spent time finally with Harry and Meghan over the past weekend while the foursome visited London for Remembrance Day events.

— EntertainmentTonight (@etnow) November 14, 2016

Although Kate and William reside in Norfolk, when they visit London, they stay at Kensington Palace as well which would have allowed for the perfect opportunity for the two couples to bond after the events of the day. Sources share that although there was speculation that the new couple had met William and Kate prior to the weekend visit to London, this is not the case.

Prince Charles also made his way to London with his wife Camilla after having just flown back from Bahrain. The Queen and Prince Philip additionally remained in London following the ceremony for Remembrance Day, which means that Harry had the perfect opportunity to introduce Meghan Markle to his entire family.

Meghan was spotted taking a short walk and enjoying the city on Thursday during which she went on a shopping trip to Whole Foods on High Street Kensington, which is quite close to the palace.

It is clear that the situation involving Markle staying in London is an indication that the relationship between the two is “serious.” Meghan has been married once before and Harry has been involved in a number of long-term relationships, yet his previous girlfriends were not keen on the spotlight. Due to being a notable actress, it is likely that Markle will be able to handle the media limelight much like Kate has. The romance between the two was made known two weeks ago, following being spotted with matching bracelets that the two have worn for months. The palace made an official announcement that the Prince and Markle had been in a relationship “for months” in a statement last week.

Prince Harry, however, made it clear that he expected their relationship to be respected, after accusing the media of intrusion and noting the “sexism and racism of social media trolls,” while adding via communications secretary Jason Knauf that their relationship “is not a game, it is her life and his.”

“I definitely lift the veil off my relationship with the Housewives. I sent the book to all the Housewives last week, I’ve gotten a few texts… Kyle Richards texted me, she said she thinks ‘this one and this one will be mad at you.’ I haven’t heard from any of the New York Housewives.”

“It was a really emotional lunch,” Andy said. “I don’t think either of us knew if we were going to see each other again. You didn’t know what was in store; whether she was coming back to the show… we got a lot off our chest that day.”

67 /77 2.1 Ty Herndon risked his career to come out, but he's a fighter NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Two years after coming out publicly as a gay man, country singer Ty Herndon is revealing much more about his lifelong struggle for acceptance in a new album that he hopes everyone can relate to. "House on Fire," released last week, features love songs that are gender neutral, a moving title track about feeling shamed inside the church and hopeful anthems for love. "I wanted music that would go out into the world and that anyone from any walk of life could hear their story in my music," Herndon said in a recent interview. "Because I have a lot of die-hard country fans who have been with me a long time and are still right there. And I have a legion of brand new fans, within the young country listeners, within the LGBT community. " In 2014, the Grammy- nominated Herndon announced he was gay and almost immediately afterward, platinum-selling singer Billy Gillman was inspired to publicly announce he was gay as well, making them among the few openly gay male country singers. Herndon credited country singer Chely Wright, who came out in 2010, as paving the way for him and many others. Days after making the announcement, he was got a standing ovation from the crowd at the in Nashville, Tennessee. "I knew there was a risk that I couldn't be in country music, and I had to be OK with that," Herndon said. "But by the grace of God, I didn't have to do that. The fans were amazing and the industry was amazing. And here two years later, it still feels like it was yesterday. " Unlike on previous albums, such as "Lies I Told Myself," where he was still being ambiguous about his struggles, on his new record his lyrics are clear and honest, especially when it comes to his spirituality. Herndon, who had hits with songs like "What Mattered Most," ''Living in a Moment" and "It Must Be Love," grew up singing gospel music in church and tent revivals and was embraced as a Christian artist, even winning a Dove Award in 2010. "I was at a tent revival when I was 10 years old and a traveling evangelist was preaching on the sins of homosexuality," Herndon said. "I became this withdrawn, unhappy kid. " But while he has been supported by country music fans, he said the Christian community that once embraced him still has a long way to go. "My foundation is not cracked," he said. "My faith in God is real. " Two years after coming out, Herndon has used his celebrity to bring focus to the needs of LGBT youth and has been volunteering with the Trevor Project, which is an anti-suicide hotline for LGBT youth. Proceeds from the download of his new song, "Fighter," will be donated to the Trevor Project. The work he does mentoring children has sparked an interest in expanding his family with his longtime partner Matt Collum. "It's so funny, 'cause I am 54 years old and just now getting the baby bug," Herndon said. "I've always wanted kids. But there are so many of my friends right now that are having babies right now, straight, gay or whatever. It's like we're the baby boomers booming. 68 /77 0.0 Miranda Lambert's album highlights duality as singer, writer Miranda Lambert, "The Weight of These Wings" (RCA Nashville) Double albums are rare these days and the best ones came out decades ago in vinyl form. But country star Miranda Lambert revives that tradition in an expansive new album, "The Weight of These Wings," which emphasizes the duality of her personality on disc A's "The Nerve" and disc B's "The Heart. " At times, the album feels a bit repetitive, but there are enough standout songs to make it worth the extra time. The fiery guitar slinger from Texas highlights her rock side with a touch of distortion, echoing vocals and high-pitched guitar licks. First single "Vice" starts with the crackle of a record and her voice drips like a smoky dive bar singer as the bass line wavers. She embodies the highway drifter trying to outrun her heartache on songs like "Runnin' Just In Case," but argues that it's the journey that makes her stronger. "Happiness isn't prison, but there's freedom in a broken heart," she sings on the album, her first record since her 2015 divorce to country star Blake Shelton after four years of marriage. She kicks up her heels with a little well-crafted lyrical levity on songs like "Pink Sunglasses" and "Highway Vagabond. " The other Lambert we've all come to love is the heart-on-her-sleeve songwriter, who helped write 20 of the 24 songs. She creates a country classic in the waltzy "To Learn Her," and she lets herself be timid with a new love on "Pushing Time," a beautiful duet with her boyfriend Anderson East. She seems to speak to her own legacy as an artist with "Keeper of the Flame," a passionate anthem for blazing ahead to be a light for others. Although releasing a double album in the reign of digital singles is likely a gamble, Lambert has a lot to say and there's plenty of fans ready to listen.

70 /77 1.6 How Brenda Fassie's R10 inspired Rebecca Malope to sing Speaking to Anele Mdoda on Real Talk recently, Rebecca opened up about the time she sang for Brenda Fassie and was given R10 by the star for her efforts.

"Brenda came to Mpumalanga with Blondie. They had a concert at the community hall. We were these naughty little kids. We didn't have money to pay so we sneaked in. We were those kids that gather outside. So, we ran in the hall and sat in the front. I was short and I was in the front. I wanted to see Brenda Fassie," Rebecca explained. Rebecca said that Brenda stopped her performance to say that if anyone could sing her next song she would give them R10.

"I ran to the stage, because I was right in front, and took the microphone and sang. And she gave me R10," Rebecca added.

Rebecca said that the incident helped her realise that she really wanted to be a singer and she soon adopted much of what she saw in Brenda Fassie, including her stage trick of giving away money to those who would try their hand at singing her songs.

Rebecca is set to share her life story in a musical showcase called Angingedwa: This Is My Story at Carnival City in December, with a biography about her life set for next year.

71 /77 0.0 Opening day nears for Illinois deer hunters: Dreams, some tweaks Things are about to change.

For one, more than 200,000 hunters will be afield in Illinois for the first firearm deer season, Friday through Sunday. Second, after a balmy fall, winter will finally nose in with some areas seeing snow Friday night or early Saturday.

Timing matters this year.

Anybody who is outside much knows signs abound of the rut.

Another good sign is crop harvest is virtually complete (corn is 97 percent finished).

A few technical things should be noted.

Micetich reminded that in the counties closed to bowhunting for firearm season, archery equipment may used on private land by hunters with a firearm permit (archery permits may not be used during firearm season in counties open to firearm deer hunting).

Unused youth permits may be used in the first firearm deer season, same as last year. And the first modern bobcat season is closed during the firearm deer seasons.

Some over-the-counter permits remain for the firearm deer seasons.

On Friday, I would appreciate updates on deer movement, weather impact and level of success for the opener via email ([email protected]), Twitter (@BowmanOutside) or Facebook (Dale Bowman).

72 /77 6.7 Why Our Brains Respond Differently to Classical Music “Music,” Ludwig van Beethoven ,” is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” The assertion seems reasonable enough if you consider his late string quartets, but it’s absurd if your reference point is the collected works of . So — at risk of sounding elitist — are artistic and popular music fundamentally different? from China suggests they are, at least in terms of how we react to them. It reports popular and classical music produce noticeably different response patterns in our brains. “This study gives clear neuronal evidence supporting the view that artistic music is of intelligence, while popular music is of physiology,” writes a team of researchers led by Ping Huang of South China Normal University in Guangzhou. The study, described in the online journal featured 18 men between the ages of 18 and 24. All of them “had engaged in some musical training or activities,” such as singing in a choir, but none were professional musicians. Huang and his colleagues created very brief musical excerpts (12 to 24 seconds apiece). Half were taken from opera, while the others were from pop songs. While in an , each participant listened to five classical excerpts, five pop excerpts, and seven similarly brief clips of “meaningless musical notes.” The researchers report the different types of music produced different response patterns in the brain’s reward circuitry. “The sub-cortical reward region was more sensitive to popular music,” they write, “while the cortical region was more sensitive to artistic music.” “In addition, the cognitive empathy regions … were more responsive to artistic music than popular music” or meaningless notes. This finding makes sense when you consider the actual experience of engaging with a great piece of music, or any other work of art. “Empathetic engagement between an audience and artworks is considered a crucial element for artistic appreciation, especially in the music domain,” the researchers write. A listener must enter into the world of the composition. and connect with the emotions the composer is trying to convey. That process requires intellectual engagement rather than “pure emotional contagion,” they argue. This was reflected in their results, which found classical music evoked higher levels of arousal in the neural default network associated with — the ability to interpret our own mental and emotional state, as well as that of others. These results provide evidence that our response to classical music is far richer than our reaction to simple tunes. Given that this is a small study that calls out to be replicated, it would be interesting to see how the brain responds to jazz, which at its best combines the complexity of art music with the earthiness of pop.

73 /77 2.9 Rise of the robot teachers: iPad apps can teach children as well as humans, says study Sometimes it's impossible to tear children away from their iPad. But a new study suggests that children's screen time can actually be used for good. Researchers have found that children learn just as much from interactive media, such as iPad or smartphone apps, as they do from human face-to-face interaction. Scroll down for video Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) compared how well children learnt from an iPad app to how well they learnt speaking in-person with an instructor. They found no statistical difference in the amount that children learnt from each source. Their findings have now been published in Frontiers in Psychology. 'Parents currently have a fairly negative view of interactive media,' said senior author Susan Birch, a UBC psychology professor. 'When parents are asked the top three reasons they give their children a mobile device, learning is not one of them. 'What our research tells us is that, while interactive media can never replace face-to-face interaction, parents might not recognise the potential role that it can play in education and learning.' The researchers asked two groups of 43 children aged four to eight to play a game either with a human instructor or on an iPad. The game asked the young participants to guess how many of the children would know different facts about animals. When the researchers quizzed the children on their knowledge, each group showed the same amount of learning, regardless of how they had been taught. Co-author Siba Ghrear, a PhD psychology student at UBC, suggests that parents can use interactive technologies like iPads to complement their school-based learning. 'The iPad is a good tool for parents because it's portable and convenient, and it can teach children wherever they may be, whether it's on the bus or in the mall,' she said. Previous research has found that TV and video are ineffective for some types of learning, but little research has looked into interactive devices such as smartphones or iPads. 'What this shows is not all screen time is bad,' said Professor Birch, noting that 80 per cent of iPad apps are targeted at children. 'This was one of the first pieces of evidence that interactive media can be beneficial for children.'

74 /77 1.0 Ed Sheeran serenades sick 9-year-old fan who has spent 80% of her life in the hospital Ed Sheeran is used to making ladies swoon around the world, but to one little girl from New Addington, England, he really is her very own Prince Charming. Melody is 9 years old. She cannot walk or talk, and has spent nearly 80 percent of her life hospitalized. That's because she suffers from Rett syndrome , a condition that "causes problems in brain function that are responsible for cognitive, sensory, emotional, motor, and autonomic function. "Melody's childhood has been marred by wide-ranging, debilitating symptoms and complications of her illness. According to her mother, Karina Driscoll, Melody has severe chronic pain, scoliosis, internal bleeding, epilepsy, osteoporosis -- and so much more. She has to be fed through a feeding tube and is on a constant stream of morphine to manage her pain. When she has particularly bad flare-ups, her "whole body becomes swollen internally and externally; she gets black fingernails and toenails; her lips become covered in cold sores; her pain gets worse; she gets pancreatitis, her eyes swell up and the blood vessels in them burst and her internal bleeding gets worse, requiring lots of blood transfusions. "Perhaps the most devastating part of her story is that no one knows why this happens to her -- all they can do is manage her pain and hope to make her as happy as possible. Enter Ed Sheehan. Given the huge impact Ed has had on Melody's short life, Karina knew she wanted to do everything in her power to bring them together. So last year, she put together a video that she was actually able to get Ed's manager, Stuart Camp, to see. Unfortunately, the best he was able to offer at the time was for Melody to attend one of Ed's concerts. Katrina was forced to pass on the offer due to Melody's poor health. It seemed all hope was lost on the two ever meeting, as Karina was told he would not be able to make a visit to the hospital and in December 2015, he announced he was taking a break from public life. But finally, about three weeks ago, Driscoll received a knock on her door. Standing there was a police officer who told her that Melody's name had been given to his department for her to receive a present. Once his police department started tweeting the video, it quickly went viral and again reached Ed's manager, who then contacted Karina. He said he would make Melody's wish come true and a week later, it did. On the morning of Wednesday, November 9, Ed Sheeran walked into Epsom Hospital in Surrey -- no bodyguards, no assistants, no cameras. For the next hour and a half, Ed sat with Melody. He even serenaded her with both of her favorite songs -- "Thinking Out Loud" and "Photograph" -- playing both on Melody's pink toy guitar. The whole time, Karina says:"[Melody] kept stroking his arm and leg and his tattoos. She kept smiling and giggling at him. You could see in her eyes how much she loves him but you could also see in his eyes by the way he looked at her that that feeling was mutual. "Just 10 minutes after Ed left, Karina received a call from Ed's manager. Ed had called him right away and told him how "touched" he was by Melody, and how he'd like to keep in contact. He even offered to bring Melody to his sound checks as a way for her to experience his performances in a safe environment that wouldn't jeopardize her health. Now that the experience she worked so hard to make happen has come and gone, Karina says she feels "overwhelmed. "Karina says she is incredibly thankful to all the people who shared Melody's story on Twitter and Facebook ("I owe them everything"). But most of all, she is thankful to the one man who has managed to inspire her little girl to keep fighting for her life. And while many will read this story and focus on Ed's beautiful act of kindness -- and it most certainly was incredible -- the real hero of this story is Melody. No matter what life throws at her, she never gives up. Even on her darkest days, she keeps smiling. Now if that doesn't inspire you, we don't know what will. 2016-11-16 07:31 abc7chicago.com
