Trust me. First a quick look at parts of a shotgun that we will be referring to There are 4 things that you need to have right in order to have a gun fit you properly 1.Length of Pull – This is the measurement from the back of the to the trigger . 2.Drop at Comb – This means how high the comb (stock) is, so when you rest your cheek on it your eye is in the right position 3.Pitch - is the angle of the recoil pad that fits to your shoulder pocket 4. CAST is simply the bend of the stock right or left STEP # 3 GUN FIT A CONT: “LENGTH OF LENGTH OF PULLPULL” – The distance from the butt of the shotgun to the middle of the trigger. Picture A = a gun stock that is to long for this youth. B Picture B = a stock that is just the right length. Two finger spaces from the nose to the knuckle of the is the best way to check if your stock is the right length like in picture B. STEP # 3 GUN FIT • HOW TO CHANGE LENGTH OF PULL? • TO MAKE A SHORTER LENGTH OF PULL • PICTURE A / CUT OFF THE STOCK AND THEN ADD THE BUTT PAD BACK ON • USE A THINNER BUTT PAD / SEE PICTURE B / TRY THIS ONE FIRST BEFORE CUTTING • MAKE SURE YOU FIRST ASK OWNER OF GUN TO SEE IF THEY WANT IT CUT IT. • SOME GUNS SHOULD NOT BE CUT IT MAY LESSON THE VALUE OF THE GUN. • CONSULT A GUNSMITH OR STOCKMAKER TO ATTEMPT THIS PROCEEDURE

A B STEP # 3 GUN FIT • HOW TO CHANGE LENGTH OF PULL? • TO MAKE A LONGER LENGTH OF PULL • PICTURE A / add additional SHIMS until best length is correct • PICTURE B / USE A THICKER BUTT PAD OR ADD ADDITIONAL SHIMS • PICTURE C / YOU CAN TEMARARILY USE STICKY BACK FOAM

A B C STEP # 3 GUN FIT CONT: • IF YOUR GUN HURTS WHEN YOU SHOOT IT? CHANGE THE PITCH OF YOUR SHOTGUN YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID. • PICTURE A / Picture of wrong pitch of a gun, the toe of the gun is the only thing touching the body, this will hurt and make the gun buck. • PICTURE B / Picture of right pitch of a gun the whole butt of the shotgun is against the body not just the toe tip like in A. • PICTURE C / Pitch names and types D • PICTURE D / Change pitch by adding sticky foam pads to top or bottom of butt pad or use shims that are tapered.

A B STEP # 3 GUN FIT CONT: IT IS MOST IMPORTANT How you know your shotgun fits? With an empty gun you mount your gun with your eyes closed directly at a mirror on a wall. With an empty gun and closed eyes you open your eyes and you see that your eye is directly in line with the rib or barrel and right on top. Just like picture e:

a: b: c: d: e: a: eye is to far to the right b: eye is to far to the left c: eye is to low d: eye is to high e: eye is perfect right in the middle and on top STEP # 3 CONTINUED SEE HOW IMPORTANT GUN FIT IS, BEAR WITH US YOU WILL SHOOT BETTER. • PICTURE A / TO RAISE YOUR EYE ABOVE THE BARREL USE STICKY FOAM IN LAYER LIKE THE PURPLE FOAM ON THIS GIRLS GUN.

When your eye looks like the one here on the left you are set to go to the next step.

(picture A) B • In other shotgun sports and hunting situations you must shoot from a low gun position. (picture B) STEP # 5 PATTERNING / WHY • Now that you have a correctly fitting shotgun, I am ready to go shooting? Yes or No ? • No, not quite yet but getting close. • What is Patterning and why do you need to do it. • Patterning a shotgun is like sighting in a rifle. • You would never go hunting until you sighted in your rifle if you wanted to be successful

• So why would you go shotgun shooting until you patterned in your shotgun? Step # 5 Patterning / How to do it?

There is a fun process to Pattern Your shotgun. It is basically shooting your shotgun into a large paper target to see where you now fitted gun shoots. The step of patterning is as follows: The Steps to pattern your shotgun are below: A

• STEP 1 – (PICTURE A) You need to shoot your shotgun at 13 yards or 39 Feet with a FULL CHOKE from a seated supported rest just like you would with a rifle. • Shooting at a large plus sign on the target paper, the picture show how to aim, it would be just like B C you are standing. (PICTURE B) • (PICTURE C) Shows two shots at two plus signs after you have taken the shots.

What does this (C) target tell you? Go to the next slide and find out. Step # 5 Patterning / Continue

• Step 2 - So looking at the picture to the right of two shots from a sitting position from 13 yards, what do we see? • We see by using a full choke that we can for sure see where the bulk of the pellets hit the target. • The shot hit right at the plus sign or crosshairs. This means you Point of Impact (POI) is exactly were your Point of Aim (POA) is. • It shows that your shotgun fits you and does not shoot way to the left or way to the right. • You should shoot more than to shots to get a good overall average of your shooting. • If your target looks like this after you shoot at your paper target your golden and ready to start shooting at the range and lean the best method of shooting a moving target. • If your shots are to the left or to the right or high or low of the crosshairs, we then would need to adjust your gun fit to make is shoot at the center X.

• Step # 5 Patterning / Continue

• Step 3 – Shoot at paper target at distance. • Now that you have your gun shooting where you are looking or pointing, we need to shoot at the same target at 35 to 40 yards in the standing position, the AVERAGE shot distance at game or clay targets. • Shoot two or three shots with full choke at he target at 35 yards to see what type of pattern you have in your shotgun. • Change to new paper and shoot different chokes to see how they pattern. STEP # 6 SHOOTING WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD There are a lot of different methods of shotgun shooting and here are some names of those methods..

1. Sustained lead method 2. Pull away method 3. Swing through method Best There are many shooters that use these methods and do very well. The one method that I have found the easiest method to use in the Swing through Method. Below, I will explain the swing through method so you can find out for yourself why it is a good method to start using as a beginner shooter.

Click this link to see youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePh333GXguk&t=11s STEP # 6 Swing Through Method of Shooting explained in basic form.

Start behind Swing on Pull trigger when Bird or flight path pointing directly at clay 1 or 2 match the bird while feet speed and continue swinging speed through through the bird

Brain to finger pull time Follow through, do creates not stop the the proper movement of the lead target shotgun or bird flies into shot STEP # 6 / CONTINUED

• ANOTHER LOOK AT SWING THROUGH SHOOTING STEP # 6 / HOW TO PRACTICE • How to practice your newfound skills at the range and at home. • When you get to the range and at the trap range, see if the range master can set the trap thrower to be set to throw out target straight away from the trap house and not oculate left and right. • Start shooting at shooting position #3 and just shoot straight a ways one after another. Do this until you can hit 18 out of 25 clays most every time. • Next move to position 4 and do the same thing, then position 5 and do it again. • Repeat the same thing in position 2 and 3 • Shoot each position until you are comfortable and hitting most of the targets • This is how you practice. This is how you progress in your ability • If you just go out and shoot a round of trap the regular way you don’t learn because every target is a different angle. STEP # 6 / PRACTICE AT HOME

• To the right are pictures of banners that look like a trap range. • Did you know that you can practice shooting at home without firing a shot, well kind of. • Top shooter will practice at home by using snap caps and mimicking shooting at the range every day. • By doing this you will just get better. • Shooting 1000 shot at this wall chart and practicing in this manner will get you to the top of any shooting ability.
