To achieve this objective, the Zoological Survey of India undertakes faunistic survey programmes and publishes the results in the form of research papers and reports and under the series "Fauna of India", "The Handbooks" and "Technical Monographs" The present contribution on the Turtles and Tortoises is the sixth in the series of "Handbooks" This is a very primitive group of animals which have a role in the conservation of Nature and are an important protein source. While studies on this group of animals began at the turn of this century, intensive studies were taken up only recently. The present "Handbook" gives a comprehensive taxonomic account of all the marine, freshwater and land turtles and tortoises of India, along with their phylogeny, distribution and keys for easy identification. It includes other information, wherever known, about their biology, ecology, conservation and captive breeding. A total of 32 species and subspecies distributed over sixteen genera and five families are dealt with here. I congratulate the authors for undertaking this work which I am sure will prove useful to students and researchers in the field of Herpetology both in India and abroad. -

Hunting of Endemic and Threatened Forest-Dwelling Chelonians in the Western Ghats, India

(Accepted November 25, 2013) ABSTRACT This study investigates the hunting of two endemic and threatened terrestrial chelonians, the Cochin forest cane turtle (Vijayachelys silvatica) and Travancore tortoise (Indotestudo travancorica) in the Western Ghats region of India. Informal interviews were conducted with indigenous and non-indigenous communities and Forest De- partment officials to understand the dynamics of chelonian hunting and the existent rationale and beliefs that supported it. Chelonian consumption was existent among both indigenous and non-indigenous communities, but was higher among the former. Indotestudo travancorica was exploited to a larger extent than Vijayachelys silvatica. Both the species were used as a cure for piles and asthma, to increase body strength and were largely captured during collection of non-timber forest produce and fire management activities. These chelonians were also sold to local hotels and served to customers known on a personal basis with minimal transfer to urban ar- eas. Conservation action needs to be prioritised towards I. travancorica, by upgrading its IUCN Red List status, and also through increased interaction between the Forest Department and local communities to improve che- lonian conservation in the landscape. It has previously been suggested that terrestrial species have a higher degree of male combat than aquatic species. The hypothesis tested in this thesis is that the dimensionality of the mating environment will influence the evolution of both male combat and sexual coercion. Specifically, male combat and sexual coercion should be more likely to evolve in two-dimensional mating environments, in which females are easier to monopolize and constrain, than in three-dimensional environments where males are easier to evade by both same- sex competitors and females. In a large sample of turtle species with a diversity of mating dimensionalities, we tested the hypothesis that dimensionality predicts the degree of male combat and sexual coercion that will occur in a given species. As predicted, we found that male combat, sexual coercion, large male size, and male weapons are more likely to occur in species in which males compete for mates two-dimensionally than in species in which males compete for mates three-dimensionally.
