PART II. INTRODUCING THE SCHOOL

A. School information

1. Name and address of class and school

Our school has two campuses - the East Campus and West Campus.

We are at the East Campus. This is our new home. We moved into the building in September of 2011. Our previous building was torn down 2 years ago and the new facility was built on the same location.

2. Number of students in class and school

There are a total of 32 students in our three 5th grade classroom.

The school has a total of 1,257 students from PreKindergarten-11 th Grade. We are adding 1 grade a year so that by 2012 we will be PreK – 12 th Grade.

The East Campus has 700 students and the West Campus has 557 students.

3. Size of school

This was our previous East Campus school building at 24 W. Walton.

This is our new East Campus building.

4. School emblem, colors or mascot

This is our school logo.

Our mascot is the Owl.

Our colors are Blue and Gold.

5. Type and number of computers

We have computer labs at each building with more than 120 computers. Most classrooms also have several PCs for student use. Each teacher has either a Desktop PC connected to a Smartboard or a Tablet connected to a Smartboard.

6. School history

The school is named after the 1 st mayor of Chicago, William B. Ogden. The school was originally opened in 1857.

B. School program

1. List 3 things about your school program that make it unique.

a. We will be one of only a handful of Pre-K through High School programs offered in the city of Chicago. b. Our C.H.O.I.C.E. (Children's Horizons Opening In Chicago Education) is a program started by our current principal, Mr. Kenneth M. Staral. It offers an out-of-school curriculum that encompasses student-centered exploration both in the classroom and beyond the school walls. Students learn about cultures from around the world and they have the opportunity to visit these countries. We have partnerships with schools in the following cities: Mexico City, Mexico Lyon, France Prague, Czech Republic Belgrade, Serbia Vilnius, Lithuania Kiev, Ukraine c. Our curriculum is built around the frameworks of both the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and the Asia Society.

A. Your community – Chicago, Illinois – United States of America - A city of great architectural significance, ethnic diversity, and cultural wealth. Chicago has achieved international status through the quality of its cultural institutions.

Location of your community - Chicago is located in the region of the United States known as the Midwest. - The state we live in is called Illinois.

The area of your community The city of Chicago is 8 miles wide (east – west) and 22 miles long (north – south)

The population of your community The city of Chicago has a population of approximately 2,900,000. The ‘metropolitan’ area or the area that includes Chicago and the smaller cities around Chicago is about 9,000,000.

B. Special characteristics

Chicago is a city of great architectural significance, ethnic diversity, and cultural wealth. 45 million people visit Chicago from around the country and the world every year.

In the summer, the city provides free concerts in Grant Park (the most popular being Blues Fest ). Blues music has deep roots in Chicago. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Buddy Guy are legends in Chicago’s Blues History.

In regards to the cultural aspects of the city, Chicago’s museums attract tourists from around the world. The Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium are all big hits. However, the Art Institute of Chicago is probably the biggest draw. It holds one the largest collections of Claude Monet paintings and just recently added a contemporary art wing.

Chicago is also famous for its sports teams and figures. We have 2 baseball teams, the White Sox (2005 World Champions) and the Cubs (have not won a World Series in over 100 years). Our football team is the Bears, our ice hockey team is the Blackhawks and our soccer team is the Fire. The basketball team in Chicago is the Bulls and probably the most famous athlete from Chicago is the Bull’s player Michael Jordan who led the Bulls to 6 championships.
