Hydraulics and Land Reclamation, 541 24 Thessaloniki, Greece 1 [email protected], 2 [email protected], 3 [email protected] Abstract: Precipitation has been widely considered as a starting point towards the apprehension of climate changes courses, constituting one of the most substantial components of the hydrologic cycle. The purpose of this work is to investigate the temporal variability of precipitation in order to contribute to a better interpretation of the hydrological status of the study area located in Northern Greece within the prefecture of Pieria. The Aison River basin drains the water of its central part, forming the greatest receiver of surface water. The precipitation data refer to the period 1974-2007. The methodology adapts various statistical approaches in order to detect possible precipitation changes in annual, monthly and seasonal basis, including both tests for monotonic trend (Mann-Kendall test, Sequential version of the Mann- Kendall test, Sen’s estimator of slope) and a test for step change (the distribution-free CUSUM test). The application of this methodological framework resulted in the identification of a few trends, occurred mainly at smaller than annual time scales. An overall downward trend, even though no statistically significant, has derived for the stations located at lower altitudes, within the agricultural zone of Pieria. Regional (Aison River basin) total precipitation series has also displayed trends similar to the ones observed in the majority of stations.

Acyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (CyanoHAB) has occurred in May 2015 in the Delta of Axios River, in Thessaloniki, in the region of Central Macedonia, in Northern Greece. The bloom expanded to the coastline of Thermaikos Gulf near the areas of Chalastra and Kimina. Toxic Anabaena sp. was isolated from the water samples. Microcystin-RR(50ppb) was confirmed with immunoassay method for microcystins (Adda specific ELISA) and Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).In this area monitoring of microcystins and its algal blooms are only experimentally applied by a satellite system. This research investigated the toxin and microcystin cells in the local coastal water and emphasize to the satellite remote sensing, as a precaution, to reduce and avoid impacts on animals’ health, Public Health and ecosystems, after harmful algal blooms. The presence of toxic marine cyanobacteria and secondary metabolites, microcystins, were studied in Thermaikos Gulf in Central Macedonia in Greece, during the period from March 2013 to March 2014. Toxic marine cyanobacteria were isolated in marine agar and identified with PCR using primers based on 16S rDNA. The presence of microcystins in water extraction was detected by immunoassay (competitive ELISA). The concentration was ranged from 0.15 to 5ppm. It was observed that populations of toxic marine cyanobacteria were increasing during spring and early winter and there was a correlation to the physical and chemical parameters of the water.

Experiences that can be exchanged Water quality monitoring is an important tool for strategic development planning. Systematic oceanographic measurements in areas such as the Thermaikos Gulf is a multi-complex task, since the system of the parameters to be monitored have to be identified according to physical-chemical-ecological- economical- legal and social problems and needs. 4. Overview of the case Since 1997 and until 2007, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research in cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Department of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering) carried out systematic (monthly) monitoring for the marine environment in the Thermaikos Gulf. 5. Context and Objectives a) Context The Thermaikos Gulf is a multi-conflict area: urban (more than 1 million inhabitants), agricultural, tourist and industrial activities co-exist along the coastline, while 3 main rivers and several minor streams, with a catchment area of 50,000 km2 discharge into the Gulf. A large part of the Gulf is shallow (with depth less than 5 m). A major part of the western coastal area was determined as a Ramsar site and includes three Natura 2000 sites (two “Sites of Community Interest (SCIs)” under the Habitats Directive and one “Specially Protected Area (SPA)” under the Birds Directive). Thermaikos Gulf is the final receptor of both municipal and industrial wastewaters from the city of Thessaloniki and considered to be one of the most polluted coastal zones in Greece.
