Time Will Crawl: Representation of 1980s Cold War Culture and Politics in Popular Music in the West By Alex Robbins Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in History University of Portland December 2017 Robbins 1 The Cold War represented more than a power struggle between East and West and the fear of mutually assured destruction. Not only did people fear the loss of life and limb but the very nature of their existence came into question. While deemed the “cold” war due to the lack of a direct military conflict, battle is not all that constitutes a war. A war of ideas took place. Despite the attempt to eliminate outside influence, both East and West felt the impact of each other’s cultural movements.

Preliminary Emergency Injunction for Relief re Residents of the County of Lancaster Pennsylvania, August 17, 2015 THE LANCASETER COUNTY COURT OF COMMON PLEAS CIVIL DIVISION _______________________________________________________________________ In Re: STANLEY J. CATERBONE and ADVANCED MEDIA GROUP, PETITIONERS v. Case No. _________________ RESIDENTS of the County of Lancaster Pennsylvania DEFENDANTS Preliminary Emergency Injunction for Relief AND NOW, on this 17th day of August, 2015 I, STANLEY J. CATERBONE and ADVANCED MEDIA GROUP, Plaintiff's, appearing pro se, and In Forma Pauperis, do hereby file a Preliminary Emergency Injunction for Relief according to Pa. R. Civ. P. 1531(a) on this 17th day of August 2015. “In determining whether a preliminary or special injunction should be granted and whether notice or a hearing should be required, the court may act on the basis of the averments of the pleadings or petition and may consider affidavits of parties or third persons or any other proof which the court may require.” Pa. R. Civ. P. 1531(a). The decision whether or not to grant a hearing on an emergency injunction is therefore left to the sound discretion of the court; the mere filing of a motion by the plaintiff does not automatically entitle him to a hearing. • The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies
THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group.

"This is on album I've always wanted to do," he says of American Recordings. "I even had a name 25 years ago for this album, it was going to be called Johnny Cash Alone. Years later Ithought about it again and wanted to do an album like this, and call it Johnny Cash Up Close. But this same concept has been in my mind since the early '70s." About his first meeting with producer/label head Rick Rubin, Cash recalls, "I liked the way he talked. Because right off he said, 'I'm familiar with most of your work, and you know what you do best.
