    Young Critics Reviews Fall 2010-2011 Cirque Dreams: Illumination By Neil Goldberg, Jill Winters & David Scott At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 17 By Aaron Bell ILLUMINATION SHOWS ITS BRILLIANCE The house lights go down in the historic Hippodrome Theatre. We’re brought into a fast-paced newscast program when we hear the superbly resonant voice of Onyie Nwachukwu, who plays the Reporter. She tells us that another regular day has just begun, and that the daily occurrences in the “Cirque Dreams: Illumination” world will soon be lighting up the stage. Although a tad disturbed by her slightly nasal, high-belting, soulful vocals, one comes to appreciate Nwachukwu’s stylized singing; it completely fits her fun-loving, scoop-seeking reporter essence. One can’t help but appreciate her wonderful articulation and vocal clarity when she serenades us with a fabulously written opening number. This song, “Change,” gives us the main idea of the entire show, “If you don’t like it, change your mind. ” One’s mind is indeed changed by this sparkly production. The many feats of physical excellence and theatrical genius suggest how everyday life would look with an incredibly heightened sense of imagination. Santiago Rojo’s costume design and Betsy Herst’s production design bring that concept to life with their explosively colorful and symbolic wardrobes and sets. One sees cast members dressed as animated street cones, traffic lights and construction items. The set uses neon effects to brighten up the town atmosphere. The characters’ relationships with each other and their environment are interesting elements as well.

He is confident and silly, but also very rock n’ roll. He is a charming and funny guy who gets along ​ with everyone. Should be played by an unflappable, magnetic performer with a strong tenor voice who can sing, act and has a great sense of humor. Drew Boley Drew is an aspiring young rocker who works at The Dupree Room. He is a nice guy with some big dreams. The role requires an experienced performer with a solid tenor voice who can ​ convey both a sweet, charming quality and fit the bill as a rocker. Dennis Dupree (can be played by a male or female) Dennis owns The Dupree Room, a rock club in L.A. Dennis has to find a way to save his club from being demolished. Dennis can be laid-back, goofy, and fatherly and should have a big ​ presence, strong acting skills and a good voice. Sherrie Christian Sherrie is a sweet, small-town girl who moves to the city to pursue a brighter future. She hopes ​ to get her break in the acting business despite her parents’ obvious disapproval. This is a perfect role for a performer a strong voice and solid acting skills. She should also pair well with Drew. Regina Regina is the city planner, and she works in the mayor’s office. She’s also a huge rock n’ roll fan AND she’s got a revolutionary spirit that she puts into action to try and save The Dupree Room.

Photo: Elizabeth Mandel There’s nothing like the enthusiasm of young people for the music of an earlier generation to ratchet up the excitement of a community theater musical production. Savvy casting, strong voices and solid acting in South Valley Civic Theatre’s production of the high school edition of Rock of Ages make up for any shortcomings on the technical side, as director/choreographer Megan Griffin keeps a loose hand on a huge cast of teenagers. Decked out in ‘80s “fashion” and some truly astonishing wigs, the teenagers bring the era of big-hair and heavy metal bands to raucous life. Rock of Ages tells the story of a starry-eyed naïf from Paola, Kansas, who heads to Los Angeles’ famous Sunset Strip over her parents’ objections to become a star. Instead, she meets an aspiring rock musician at the nightclub where she gets a job, finds herself also smitten by the actual Rock Star who breaks her heart, and ultimately comes to understand things about herself and the wider world. Griffin has cast her three principals—small town girl Sherrie Christian, would-be rocker Drew Boley and rock star Stacee Jaxx—with three teenagers who work their way confidently around the stage, the songs and each other. Emily Pember brings a wonderfully nuanced, giddy sweetness paired with some sensible Kansas realism to Sherrie, and her ballads, both solo and paired with her competing love interests, are lovely.
