In 1789, Wesley led a large number of Dublin Methodists to the Cathedral for the administration of Holy Communion. Stop at the site of Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church, the first Methodist chapel in Ireland. Stop at St. Mary's Church, where John Wesley's first sermon was preached in Ireland at what was called Evening Prayer in St. Mary's Church to "as gay and senseless a congregation as ever I saw."     WALES AND IRELAND TRIP MAY 12 TO JUNE 4, 2009 What a coincidence! Meaningless, to be sure - but a coincidence, nonetheless. Our trip to the British Isles in 2009 began and ended one day earlier than our trip to Scotland, May 14 to June 5, 2001. (One can only hope that September of this year doesn't hold the same sort of unpleasant surprise that was visited upon us eight years ago.) OK, so I made a "small" error - we are departing two days earlier, not one. And, OK, so it wasn't much of a coincidence, was it? I mean, a real coincidence - one of excruciating consequence - occurred at the Polo Grounds in NYC on October 3, 1951 when Ralph Branca of the Blessed Brooklyn Dodgers was called in to pitch in the 9th inning and, by coincidence, Bobby Thomson of the Bestial New York Giants happened to come to bat, and, by coincidence, Mr. Branca happened to throw a pitch that the aforementioned Mr. Thomson happened to swing at, and, by coincidence, made contact with said pitch and drove it a miserable 309 feet into the first row of the left- field seats of the absurdly apportioned Polo Grounds, thus ending the Dodgers' season and causing a certain 12-year-old, watching on TV, in Brooklyn to burst into tears. Now that was a coincidence! But I digress. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis centres on the analysis of the sustainable management of visitor attractions in Ireland and the development of a tool to aid attraction managers to becoming sustainable tourism businesses. Attractions can be the focal point of a destination and it is important that they are sustainably managed to maintain future business. Fáilte Ireland has written an overview of the attractions sector in Ireland and discussed how they would drive best practice in the sector. However, there have still not been any sustainable management guidelines from Fáilte Ireland for tourist attractions in Ireland. The principal aims of this research was to assess tourism attractions in terms of water, energy, waste/recycling, monitoring, training, transportation, biodiversity, social/cultural sustainable management and economic sustainable management. A sustainable management checklist was then developed to aid attraction managers to sustainability within their attractions, thus saving money and the environment. Findings from this research concluded that tourism attractions in Ireland are not sustainably managed and there are no guidelines, training or funding in place to support these attraction managers in the transition to sustainability. Managers of attractions are not aware or knowledgeable enough in the area of sustainability.

    The Labyrinth in Ireland Jeff Saward In a country so steeped in history and with an artistic heritage famously decorated with swirling and spiralling art forms, from the time of the earliest Neolithic rock art through to the Celtic masterpiece of the Book of Kells, it might seem logical to find the labyrinth symbol also abundant in Ireland. Instead there are only a handful of historic examples known, most in connection with churches and monastic locations, but each is quite unique and a good example of their use as a multi-faceted symbol. A Historical Aside The story of how the labyrinth symbol came to occupy the grand naves of the greatest Christian monuments of the Middle Ages and gain acceptance with the Church is long and tortuous. It took nearly a thousand years for this episode in the history of the labyrinth to unravel. The first example of a labyrinth in an obviously Christian setting is to be found in Algeria, North Africa, and provides an illuminating insight into how the labyrinth may have been visualized by the early Christian mind. It is a mosaic pavement labyrinth of typical Roman style, but laid in the floor of the Basilica of St. Reparatus, founded in 324 CE in the Roman town of Castellum Tingitanum (modern- day Chlef). At its centre is a word square comprising the words “Sancta Eclesia” (Holy Church) repeated over and over. Such word squares, or letter labyrinths, were popular with the Romans, and this example, enclosed within a physical labyrinth, has been interpreted by scholars as a depiction of the Civitas Dei (City of God, i.e.
