Language Notes on Baronies of Ireland 1821-1891
Database of Irish Historical Statistics - Language Notes 1 Language Notes on Language (Barony) From the census of 1851 onwards information was sought on those who spoke Irish only and those bi-lingual. However the presentation of language data changes from one census to the next between 1851 and 1871 but thereafter remains the same (1871-1891). IV., c 99. Their origins pre-date this act, they were used in the assessments of local taxation under the Grand Juries. Over time many were split into smaller units and a few were amalgamated. Townlands and parishes - smaller units - were detached from one barony and allocated to an adjoining one at vaious intervals. This the size of many baronines changed, albiet not substantially. Furthermore, reclamation of sea and loughs expanded the land mass of Ireland, consequently between 1851 and 1861 Ireland increased its size by 9,433 acres. The census Commissioners used Barony units for organising the census data from 1821 to 1891. These notes are to guide the user through these changes. From the census of 1871 to 1891 the number of subjects enumerated at this level decreased In addition, city and large town data are also included in many of the barony tables. Mcnaughtons of Ireland Alphabetical
THE McNAUGHTONS OF IRELAND After a few pages of introduction you will find my 240 page database of all the references I have found to male McNaughtons/McNaghtens/McNattens etc who were alive pre c.1840 and had a stated link to Ireland. It is in alphabetical order - and approximate chronological order within that. However, scroll up and down through a name to check that an individual doesn’t reappear later. If anyone discovers any more, please use the comments section and I shall update the table over the years. Some females are found at the end. Notes: Mc implies Scottish roots, and is hence more prevalent in Ulster. This database is hence heavily skewed to families in Ulster, and particularly County Antrim. Marriage between Catholics and Protestants was always common. Catholics frequently ‘renounced Papism’ to further themselves in Society – particularly in order to inherit land. Note that when someone was married in an Anglican church, I erroneously put their religion down as C o I (Church of Ireland) when in fact they could have been any religion but were only allowed to marry in the Parish Church (which was the Anglican Established Church). I feel that, in the 18th C, “McNaghten” and particularly “McNatten” imply longer Irish domicile than McNaughton. However, some of the East Antrim coast McNaughtons had been resident there -possibly for hundreds of years – in what was basically a Scotch community, the Glyns. There is some evidence that McNaghton was pronounced McNaten/McNeighton. McNaughton was often recorded in England as MacNorton. Most McNaghten families had changed their name to McNaughton by 1860 (and the Clan chief ones to Macnaghten).

NEW light upon the nature of the first fortresses built by the at Simon Fraser University on June 6, 2015 A Normans in Ireland may, I think, be gained from a consider- ation of the number and distribution of certain Irish place names involving one or other of the terms mote and breteache. The mote names, indeed, are so obvious that they have not been alto- gether overlooked, but their significance has, I think, been missed, while even the existence of the bretesche names has not hitherto been suspected. To take the latter, as the more important for our argument, first: The word Brittas, sometimes slightly modified, constitutes or 'fonnB part of the names of thirty-seven townlands in Ireland. From the form of the name and from the distribution and posi- tions of the townlands I think it may be shown that the word ' Brittas' is not of Irish origin at all, but represents the Old French breUtcke, or rather, more immediately, an AHglo-Norman or a Middle-EngliBh form of that word. From all the available data it may be inferred that the term was used in Ireland in early Anglo- Norman times to denote a complete fortress, consisting of a wooden tower, often but not always placed on a mote, or mound of earth, surrounded by a fosse and earthen rampart, and (as we may suppose) further protected by a palisade ; that these towers we*e erected by Anglo-Norman or English settlers in the twelfth and early part of the thirteenth centuries; that though in some early cases there is evidence that they were the principal fortresses VOL.

The Department has statutory responsibility for the sites and monuments in this list which are protected under Article 3 of the Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (NI) Order 1995. They are and are listed in alphabetical order of townland name within each county. The Schedule of Historic Monuments at April 2016 This schedule is compiled and maintained by the Department and is available for public consultation at the Monuments and Buildings Record, Waterman House, 5-33 Hill Street, Belfast BT1 2LA. Additions and amendments are made throughout each year and this list supersedes all previously issued lists. To date there are 1,977 scheduled historic monuments. It is an offence to damage or alter a scheduled site in any way. No works should be planned or undertaken at the sites listed here without first consulting with Historic Environment Division and obtaining any necessary Scheduled Monument Consent. The unique reference number for each site is in the last column of each entry and should be quoted in all correspondence. Where sites are State Care and also have a scheduled area they are demarcated with an asterisk in this list The work of scheduling is ongoing, and the fact that a site is not in this list does not diminish its unique archaeological importance. MCMURTRY Irish Origins of CF 203 Andrew McMurtry July 2008 The following examines the Irish origins of the McMurtry family (CF 203), which settled on land near the village of South March, in the township of March, Carleton County, Upper Canada, along the Ottawa River, in what is commonly referred to as the Ottawa Valley. James McMurtry (1794-1879) and wife Nancy (nee Wilson) McMurtry (1793-1874) were married in Ireland before settling in South March in 1823, the year March Township was established. John Benjamin McMurtry, their first child, was born that same year. DNA tests conducted in 2005 revealed that James McMurtry’s family matches 24 out of 25 markers with the family of Alexander McMurtry (CF 211) who was born in 1780. According to the testing firm, Family Tree DNA, these two families are definitely related and “the probability of a close relationship is very high.” In fact, a 24/25 match means there is 99% likelihood the families share a common ancestor in a genealogical time frame. Alexander McMurtry was from the parish of Artrea (Ardtrea / Ardtragh) in Co. Derry, which is an interesting parish in that it’s located partly in the barony of Dungannon, county of Tyrone, and partly in the barony of Loughinsholin, county of Derry, both counties being in the province of Ulster. The majority of the parish is in Co. Derry along the shores of Lough Neagh, the largest fresh water lake in the UK or Ireland. The market and post-town in the parish is Moneymore.
