- The Tajikistan women’s national team has never played a match at senior level, making their participation – let alone as a group host – a unique story, and a matter of great interest in the qualifying tournament.

- Tajikistan has previously had age-group teams in women’s football, with its under-19 side falling to three defeats in hard-fought, competitive matches in attempting to qualify for the 2017 AFC U-19 Women’s Championship.

- Little is known of individual players, but Coach Sulaymon Bobokalonov has previously taken charge of Tajikistan’s women’s teams.

- Having avoided drawing some of the more decorated opponents in the qualifying tournament, the Philippines has the opportunity to appear in the tournament for the first time since 2003 (when there was no qualification process)

- Captained by goalkeeper Inna Palacios, the Philippines held extensive trials of locally- based players in February 2017 with an eye to the qualifiers.

- In recent years, the team has featured a number of US-based players with Filipino heritage, as well as many locally-based student footballers who combine football with university studies.

- The Philippine Football Federation has launched a new PFF Women’s League, with 11 teams representing both clubs and universities kicking off the new competition in November 2016.

- Coach Leticia ‘Buda’ Bautista is the first woman to take charge of the national team, and is a former Philippines international defender herself.

- Absent from the international scene since 2011, Iraq are entering a major competitive women’s tournament for the first time in their history.

- They will kick off their campaign against Tajikistan, who are yet to play a match as a senior national team, presenting two of the tournament’s least experienced teams with the opportunity to claim a precious win.

- Iraq’s U16 women’s team competed in the AFC Championship in 2016, and were – with some exceptions – relatively competitive, and picked up one win against Palestine from their five matches.

- Entering the tournament for the first time, but unlike Iraq and Tajikistan, this team has played senior international matches consistently throughout the last two years.

- 10 friendly matches in 2016 (for three wins, all against Maldives) followed by four matches so far in 2017 makes UAE one of the most active women’s national teams anywhere in Asia.

- A 4-0 win over Singapore and competitive losses to Azerbaijan (0-1, 2-3) underline the progress made by UAE, but the team also suffered two heavy losses (1-8 and 0-5) against in March.

- Korea Republic have never reached the AFC Women’s Asian Cup final, despite four semi- final appearances, but recent years have seen consistent improvement, and the achievement of several historic firsts in recent years

- A first-ever win at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and a subsequent Round of 16 appearance in 2015 was recently followed up by an excellent showing at the Cyprus Cup, which included wins over Scotland (ranked 21, 2-0) and New Zealand (19, 2-0) to reach the final, where they lost to Switzerland.

- Korea Republic are very strong defensively. The 1-0 loss to Switzerland in the Cyprus Cup final ended a run of five consecutive clean sheets.

- Ranked in Asia’s top five, and in the midst of a run of good form and results, Korea Republic have been somewhat unlucky to draw such a difficult opponent in DPR Korea, who have won the last nine encounters between the two sides.

- Star player and all-time leading scorer Ji So-yun was prominent in the Cyprus Cup, and became the first Korean woman to score the winning goal in the Women’s FA Cup Final for Chelsea in 2015

- Uzbekistan took part in five AFC Women’s Championship tournaments from 1995 to 2003, but haven’t appeared in the final tournament since a qualification process was introduced ahead of the 2006 tournament,

- Took part in 2016 Yongchuan International tournament in China where they were beaten, but competitive against opponents with much higher rankings; Denmark (ranked 15th, 1-2), China (13th, 1-4) and Iceland (20th, 0-1)

- Convincing wins against UAE (8-1 and 5-0) in pre-qualifying friendly matches held in Dubai were timely confidence boosters.

- Uzbekistan will see their first two matches - against India and Hong Kong - as winnable fixtures, but will surprise many if they are able to finish above DPR Korea or Korea Republic

- The powerhouse of South Asian women’s football, India has won all four SAFF Women’s Championship tournaments (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016), beating Bangladesh in the final of last year’s edition, which actually finished in January 2017.

- While they have dominated their region, India has struggled somewhat against opponents from beyond it, with a win against Bahrain in 2013 their last success against opposition from outside South Asia.

- The AIFF’s Indian Women’s League now gives women’s players a platform to compete at a national level.

- Yumnam Devi was the top scorer in both stages of the league season, and is expected to be part of the squad in DPR Korea.

- Hong Kong appeared in the first 14 AFC Women’s Championships (from 1975 to 2003), but have not appeared in the tournament’s finals since qualifying became mandatory ahead of the 2006 tournament.

- Recent wins against Singapore (2-0) and (1-0) ended a run of heavy defeats, including a 14-0 loss to Group B opponents Korea Republic in December 2016.

- Hong Kong are one of the higher ranked teams in the qualifying tournament, but have been dealt a difficult group featuring two of the World’s top 20 teams, which would make qualifying for the 2018 finals an outstanding achievement.

CHINESE TAIPEI

Ranking: 40 (8th in AFC) Coach: Masayuki Nagira Captain Yu Hsiu-Chin 2014 WAC Did not qualify

Communications: Ling Wai Cheng [email protected] + 886921956390

- A powerhouse of the early years of Asian women’s football, and three time Asian champion (1977, 1979, 1981), Chinese Taipei failed to qualify for the 2010 and 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cups, and hasn’t won a match at the finals since 2003.

- Chinese Taipei appear to be the chief challengers to the strongly fancied Thailand, although they were well beaten by the Thais (2-5) in a friendly match last October.

- The team prepared for the qualifiers by taking part in the 2017 Istria Cup in Croatia, where they suffered losses to Slovakia (0-1), Slovenia (0-9) and Northern Ireland (1-5) before beating Hungary’s B team (1-0) in a match which did not count as a full senior international.
