Shabbat, February 16, 2019 - Adar I 11, 5779 Parshat Tetzaveh (Pg. 464) The Eruv is Up this Shabbat

Torah Insights

“And you shall command the children of , and they shall take to you pure olive oil, crushed for lighting, to kindle the lamps continually [ner tamid]. In the Tent of Meeting, outside the dividing curtain that is in front of the testimony…” (Tetzavah 27: 20-21)

The Torah dictates that the lighting of the “eternal light” of the Menorah should take place outside the holy of holies. Rabbi Yosef Patzanovski, in his monumental commentary Pardes Yosef, remarked that within each of our hearts we are commanded to light a “flame of G-d”. However, this flame should not burn solely within the environs of the holy of holies, but must be lit on the outside. This is an allusion that one must not solely adhere to the values of the Torah while residing in a “holy” location, such as a shul or study hall, but rather one must carry their values in everyday life, into one’s home and office as well.
