Mudsock Messenger Meetings: 2Nd Monday of Each Month Mudsock Messenger Meetings: 2nd Monday of each month Fishers United Methodist Church [Website] mudsockquiltersguild.org JUNE 2016 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volume 6, Issue 6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the President’s Pen I hope you are all enjoying your current project(s)! JUNE BIRTHDAYS Happy, Happy B-Day to: When we heard that the Always In Stitches Craft sale was being discontinued, Diane Peterson wanted to continue and revise that fund raiser and make it even better. 03 Suzie Wetzel She certainly made that happen. At the 1st Annual Mudsock Quilt Guild “Tag Sale“, 04 Wanda Koers held last month, there were quilts on display, balloons like you see at the Vera 14 Carole Anderson Bradley sale, wonderful gift baskets, baked goods and music. It was a wonderful 15 April Sterling success and a fun bonding experience for all involved. 16 Val Angove 17 Bettye McGraw All that hard work paid off and raised $1347.10. That was in addition to the 24 Lynda Lockerbie $2094.90 that was raised at our monthly “Tag Sale” table items, at the meetings since June 2015. I want to thank everyone that signed up and helped, those that Welcome to New showed up and stayed to help, those who donated items and/or made purchases throughout the year and/or at the sale, those who helped organize and price items, Members!! those who stored items, those who helped get the word out and everyone who helped in any way to make it a success. A very special thank you goes to Diane for pulling it all together. Great Job!! Have you used the Amazon Smile Account to make purchases yet? Our guild gets a small percentage of every purchase made using the Amazon Smile Account. It’s easy to use. I clicked on the link that is on our website and followed the instructions. I like to use Amazon for bulky paper purchases, among other items, since they are priced right and delivered right to my door. Happy quilting! Pat ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 1 of 6 June 13th Mudsock Guild Meeting (9:30 – 11:30+) Our 2016 theme this year is “What have you always wanted to learn?” At our June meeting we will have Cathy Franks present “Pieced Border Designs and Bindings”. We should really get our creative juices flowing on this one. We will meet at the Fishers United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 9691 E. 116th Street, Fishers. Bring a lunch or grab a bite at one of the local restaurants. We will meet in the afternoon for a “sew- in” at the Community Health Pavilion, Saxony (13121 Olio Rd). This is where the Community Hospital North Charity group meets. In October our program will be “Gift Ideas” as we want to help you be creative for Christmas. If you have some gift suggestions/ideas please bring them and instructions on how they are made. Mark Your Calendars!! Page 2 of 6 Other Quilting Events Mar 4-Jan 8, 2017 The Indianapolis Museum of Art presents A Joy Forever: Marie Webster Quilts as part of Indiana’s Bicentennial Celebration. This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Marie Daugherty Webster (1859-1956), who is considered one of the leading designers in the history of early 20th-century quilt making. Born and raised in Indiana, Webster designed and made her first appliquéd quilt in 1909. In the following years, her quilts were featured in Ladies' Home Journal, which brought her international fame and recognition. The exhibition consists of 25 appliquéd quilts designed and made by Marie Webster, which date from 1909-1930, 13 patterns, and original pages from Ladies' Home Journal. Marie Daugherty Webster's scrapbook is also display. May 13-Jul 9 Form, Not Function: Quilt Art at the Carnegie explores the world of contemporary art quilts. This annual, juried exhibit draws works of art by artists across the United States and celebrates innovation and creative thought in the increasingly popular medium of art quilts. Over the past thirteen years, Form, Not Function has gained recognition for this evolving art form, and the Carnegie Center is proud to continue serving as a known venue for the exhibition of contemporary art quilts. This is a great annual exhibit fairly close by, 2 hrs. south of I65 to the northern edge of the Ohio River above Louisville, KY. I have seen the show several times, and it is impressive. Judy Ireland Page 3 of 6 Detail of one of the Carnegie Quilts Jun 6-Jul 30 200: Threads of Time presented by INfiber and The Nickel Plate Arts District and Art in City Hall in Fishers. This is an official Indiana Bicentennial Endorsed project. Open to the public on June 6 with a reception from 6 to 8 PM June 10, this exhibit will run until July 30, 2016. It is likely that City Hall gallery will be open on Saturdays the summer during the Farmers’ Market as well as on weekdays 8:30 - 4:30. Jun 24-Sep 24 This is a regional SAQA exhibit (Studio Art Quilt Associates) by fiber artists in Indiana and several surrounding Midwestern states. It is a juried show in the Brett Waller Community Gallery on the first level near the museum shop (free access). Images of contemporary quilted/fiber art were submitted to the museum’s curator of textile and fashion arts, and about 30 pieces were chosen for this exhibit. Judy Ireland of Mudsock Guild has a work in this show. An opening panel discussion called An Evening with the Artists with four of the artists will be at 4 PM on June 23 which is Thursday evening, a free admission weekly event at the museum. Contact Judy Ireland for more information on the above exhibits: [email protected] July 14 From Maureen Weflen who attended our Tag Sale: The Indianapolis Quilt Guild is having a similar sale with cupcakes at their July 14, 2016 meeting from 7 PM to 9 PM at the 2nd Presbyterian Church, 7700 N. Curators’ Choice on Art and Politics Experts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, choose their favorite works with a political message. By Ted Loos March 9, 2020 “Vote Quilt” (1975) by Irene Williams Pamela Parmal, chair of textile and fashion arts Quilts such as this example by Irene Williams of Gee’s Bend, Ala., are a reminder of how women, primarily restricted to the domestic sphere, have often turned to needlework to express themselves. We can only speculate that in using the VOTE fabric, Irene Williams might be recalling her community’s struggle over voting rights during the tumultuous civil rights movement of the 1960s. But as Williams understood, it is only by making our voices heard that we can move toward greater understanding and create change. Hanging trees and hollering ghosts: the unsettling art of the American deep south The porch of artist Emmer Sewell. Lonnie Holley crafts sculptures out of car tyres and other human detritus. Self-taught luthier Freeman Vines carves guitars out of wood that came from a “hanging tree” once used to lynch black men. The “yard shows” of Dinah Young and Joe Minter are permanent exhibitions of their art – a cacophony of “scrap-iron elegies”. Almost all of this art comes from Alabama, and it all features in We Will Walk, Turner Contemporary’s groundbreaking new exhibition of African-American art from the southern state and its surroundings.
