So when they were invited to Kawasaki, Japan in September 2008 for a concert with Testament and Forbidden , drummer and 2 of 8 10/19/2009 11:15 AM Voivod Invade Japan on 'Tatsumaki' DVD - Noisecreep http://www.noisecreep.com/2009/10/16/voivod-invade-japan-on-tatsuma... founding member Michel 'Away' Langevin was beyond stoked. "At the show, there were a lot of young kids with Voivod shirts, which was very cool to see," Langevin tells Noisecreep. "There were a lot of people there who had never seen us and who probably thought they'd never get to see Voivod, so it was very special for us." A DVD of the concert, 'Tatsumaki: Voivod in Japan 2008,' will be released on Nov.17. The DVD was shot for Canadian television with three cameras and recorded straight from the soundboard. The lineup for the show consisted of Langevin, vocalist Denis 'Snake' Bélanger, new guitarist Dan Mongrain, and the original bass player Jean-Yves 'Blacky' Thériault. During the hour-plus set, Voivod played 12 career-spanning songs, beginning with 'Voivod' from their 1984 debut album, 'War and Pain,' and ending with their cover of Pink Floyd 's 'Astronomy Domine' from their groundbreaking 1989 disc 'Nothingface.' The DVD also features the tracks 'The Prow,' 'The Unknown Knows,' 'Ravenous Medicine,' 'Overreaction,' 'Tribal Convictions,' 'Tornado,' 'Panorama,' 'Nuclear War,' 'Nothingface' and 'Brain Scan.' In addition, 'Tatsumaki: Voivod in Japan 2008' includes versions of 'Panorama,' 'Treasure Chase' and 'Tornado' shot in Quebec City in July 2009. There's also a video interview with Foo Fighters frontman and longtime Voivod fan Dave Grohl. "This is the most bad-ass band I ever heard in my life," Grohl says. "Every musician has a signature, Voivod had four. Voivod sounded like no one else. They are one of a kind." Lastly, the DVD includes 'Seeking Voivod,' a previously unreleased mini-film in French with English subtitles. "It's a fake documentary that a friend of ours did last year," Langevin says. "It's a road movie, and it's pretty funny. I think it shows a side of us that a lot of people don't get to see." PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc.

PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.

  • The Thematical and Stylistic Evolution of Heavy Metal Lyrics and Imagery from the 70S to Present Day
1 Jeroen Buts Master Engels The Thematical and Stylistic Evolution of Heavy Metal Lyrics and Imagery From the 70s to Present Day Master scriptie Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte Promotor: Prof. Dr. Gert Buelens 2 Prologue You cannot make me feel guilty/ I don't give a shit about respect I won't join your moral masturbation/ I'm the prodigal son gone off the tracks You cannot make me feel sorry/ I don't give a damn about your pride I'm the cat-piss on your carpet/ The last crushing thought before you die Don't fit in your picture Don't fit in your world Don't match all the lies you feed your kids Feel no loyalty/ This deal was made without me Sure I never signed it/ Your contracts don't apply to me I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ On payment of a small fee I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ How much would you pay? (“Dead Serious and Highly Professional”, The Ocean) If someone were to tell you, dear reader, that heavy metal is just a louder, faster and more formulaic version of that popular musical genre which defined the late 70s, called hard rock, that someone would probably be wrong. The above lyric contains several elements which indicate just how incomplete such a statement would be. Most importantly, it divides those who read it almost instantly: a metal fan, even if his taste is for a different subgenre of metal, will recognize a specific quality in this text.

Disparate films from a variety of genres use different forms of popular music in different ways, however these negotiations with pop music and its cultural surroundings have one true implication: that the 'inde- pendentness' (or 'indieness') of these movies is informed, anchored and embellished by their relationships with their soundtracks and/or the representations of or posi- tioning within wider popular music subcultures.
