Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar First at Foursquare Submitted By: Coleman Roberts Communications Friday, 19 August 2011 Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar first at Foursquare Submitted by: Coleman Roberts Communications Friday, 19 August 2011 NEWS RELEASE 19 August 2011 Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar first at Foursquare Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar is the first cheese brand to exploit the location-based social network Foursquare. Wales’ award-winning cheese brand enjoys strong customer loyalty and was one of the first cheese brands to embrace social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook to engage with its customers. Foursquare allows users to share their location with friends by “checking in” to attractions, shops, restaurants and pubs via their mobile devices, and sharing “tips” or recommendations. They earn points for checking in and the highest number of “check ins” can lead to them being made the “Mayor” of the venue. Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar, which is made in North Wales, is urging its Foursquare friends to “check in” at top Welsh tourist venues to discover the Welsh heritage that inspired the award-winning cheese. “We think it is important to have a two-way communication with our customers,” says Darren Gough, brand ambassador for Collier’s, "and word of mouth is still the most powerful marketing tool." Foursquare is essentially like word of mouth with people 'talking' via mobile phone and social media. Says Darren, “I love using Twitter to keep in touch with what’s going on and have my say. And now we have another way to reach the people who are interested in our cheese when they are on the move.” Visit Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar on Foursquare at https://foursquare.com/collierscheese Note to editors: For more information, samples or pictures please contact Leigh Roberts on 01656 788336 or 07739 511466 or email [email protected] About Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar Former cricket international Darren Gough is the brand ambassador for Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar. Darren is now a radio presenter on Talksport’s Drivetime show. He won Strictly Come Dancing in 2005 and went on to win two further Christmas specials. Page 1 Collier’s was launched in 2002 It is made at the Llandrynog Creamery in the Vale of Clwyd, Denbighshire, North Wales Wales’ proud industrial heritage inspired the Collier’s brand. Its founder’s grandfather was a miner and like his colleagues often took cheddar cheese sandwiches down the mine for “snap” (lunch) in a tin box Collier’s characteristics reflect the strengths of the coal miner: power, integrity and reliability. Collier’s is a uniquely powerful cheddar with a long, deep character and savoury, yet slightly sweet taste. Unusually, it contains tantalising “crunchy bits” which are actually calcium lactate grains that develop during maturation and are evidence of the cheese’s high quality. The old, traditional Welsh recipe is a closely guarded secret. Collier’s is matured for up to 20 months and is regularly and carefully graded throughout its development. Awards include: “Best Vintage Cheddar” International Cheese Awards 2007 “Best Welsh Cheddar” International Cheese Awards 2008 “Best Extra Mature Cheddar” International Cheese Awards 2009 “Best Welsh Cheddar” International Cheese Awards 2010 “Best Mature Cheddar” at the National Cheese Awards 2010 Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar is available from Tesco, Asda, Co Op, Morrisons, Waitrose, Spar, Booths, Costcutter and independent retailers. Collier’s is exported to USA and Australia. The Collier’s range also includes Grated; and Collier’s Welsh Valleys Butter that is available in Tesco in Wales. • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

This year the programme included an update on the progress of the Coming Home fundraising campaign and the provision of housing for disabled and injured Service and ex-Service personnel; a detailed explanation of the Government’s Welfare Reforms and the controversial ‘Bedroom Tax’ (see page 10); there were several opportunities for tenants to drive the discussions about the reforms, current estate services, future estate improvements, communication with the Trusts and commentary on the ‘general picture’. We also had a lively and informative quiz. There was further information on the future of the two Haig Trusts, Haig Homes and Haig Housing Trust, including the ‘grand reveal’ of the new logo as seen here (drum roll please!). Some of the issues raised at the conference are looked at on pages 12 and 13.

  • Ashley Cowan (G88-93)
ASHLEY COWAN (G88-93) Ashley was born in 1975 in Hitchin in Hertfordshire. He made his first-class debut for Essex against Derbyshire at Chelmsford in August 1995 and picked up his first wicket in first-class cricket during the following Championship fixture, against Yorkshire at Headingley – the victim was Darren Gough. The right-armer cemented a regular place in the 1st XI in 1996 when he picked up 37 Championship wickets – including a hat-trick against Gloucestershire at Colchester. 1997 proved to be his most rewarding campaign, when his domestic performances earned him a spot in England’s squad to tour the West Indies. Cowan finished second in Essex’s Championship bowling averages with 52 wickets @ 25.65, and was the County’s leading wicket-taker in the AXA one-day League and NatWest Trophy. In the NatWest Trophy he enjoyed one of his finest hours (or closer to three) when he ensured Essex took a firm grip of the Final against Warwickshire at Lord’s from the off. His dismissal of former team-mate Nick Knight in the first over was the prelude to an outstanding analysis of 12-3-29-3. Essex’s nine-wicket victory provided Cowan with the first of two knock-out winner’s medals in consecutive seasons as the County returned to Lord’s the following season in the Benson and Hedges Cup Final. Cowan again picked up three wickets as Leicestershire were brushed aside. In between these crowning glories came a largely undistinguished trip to the Caribbean with England, where he was restricted to just three first-class matches in between the Tests.

Aleksandar Popov Accepted in the spring semester 2019 on the recommendation of Prof. em. Dr. Udo Fries and Prof. Dr. Daniel Schreier Zurich, 2019 Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the linguistic features of spoken English sports commentating. Sports commentary is a combination of narration and entertainment, and an easily recognisable form of communicating information to a mass audience. By examining a corpus of 160,000 words transcribed from live cricket, football, horse racing and tennis commentaries broadcast on UK television and radio, a quantitative and qualitative study is carried out for the purpose of determining the effects of three factors on the language produced by sports commentators: the nature of the sport, the nature of the broadcast medium and developments over time, defined by the interval between two sets of recordings (1996–2002 and 2013–2015).
