Phil Schwartz remembers Maskelyne May 2017 Meeting Posted on May 31, 2017 by Dennis Phillips Ring Report Ring #170 “The Bev Bergeron Ring” SAM Assembly #99 May 2017 Meeting Craig Schwarz called the May Meeting to order with 28 in attendance. Dan Stapleton gave a wrap up to the recent Magicpalooza 2017, Florida State Close Up Contest Convention here in Orlando. The “Day of Magic” Flea Market and lectures is September 9th. Admission is $25. It will be at the Holiday Inn Resort, 13351 State Road 535, Orlando. Bev Bergeron’s Teach-in featured a bag of lapel buttons from a mid-1960s IBM Convention. He was spring cleaning and gave the buttons away during the meeting. He told a humorous story about the button-maker changing the print for “Rabbit in the the Hat” believing that Bev had made a mistake. Phil Schwartz presented Magic History Moment #84 about John Nevil Maskelyne ( 1839-1917) John was later closely associated with his magic partner ,David Devant. Born in Cheltenham, England John Nevil Maskelyne was fascinated with automata in his boyhood and became a watchmaker. With a friend George Cooke , he started a magic club that is said to be the origin of England’s Magic Circle. Repairing a mechanism for a stranger led Maskelyne into understanding the mechanical tricks behind Spiritualism and he developed an act after he learned how the famous Davenport Brothers did their Spirit Cabinet. Maskelyne and Cooke performed before the British Royalty and began a long engagement at St. James Hall in 1873. He moved to The Egyptian Hall and in 1904 to St.

Ex Libris by Joaquin Ayala, Ph.D. Hello folks and welcome to the first Ex Libris article for 2020! Happy New Year to you all! My faithful readers will know that each year in January, I consider it a chance to go back to basics, back to the beginning or an elementary level, if you will. As such I always write about a book that is considered a must-read for beginning magicians, but which can also be of use to advanced practitioners. This month we will focus on Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic by Mark Wilson, originally published in 1975 as a large-format, comb-bound book, then again in 1988 as a 472-page hardcover book with a dustjacket. It was published by Ottenheimer Publishers, Inc., for Courage Books. It has since been republished in various sized softcover formats. This is a book that has it all – cards, coins, parlor, close-up, mentalism, illusions, stunts, flourishes and more! There were quite a few famous contributors to this book, including but not limited to the likes of David Roth, Alan Wakeling, Ulysses F. Grant, Don Wayne and others. The effects are all described, followed by the secret and the preparation, the presentation and finally, any additional comments and suggestions. The first major section deals with cards and card magic including definitions of card-related terms (i.e. spot card, court card, etc.), various common shuffles, methods for false shuffles, many effects with normal cards and even some using jumbo cards! There are a great number of flourishes taught such as the Charlier Cut (a.k.a.

Whether he was on the stage or at the close-up table, the Dutch master’s sleight of hand was impeccable. Beginning with his 1950 World Championship, Kaps’ deftly routined acts of manipulation led to the status of being the only three-time Grand Prix winner in FISM history. The United States first witnessed Kaps’ virtuoso style on a 1954 Ed Sullivan Show. His act was a study in magical showmanship. Although he included exhibitions of proficiency in the form of fancy flourishes, he never revealed his expertise while producing miraculous effects. On another American television appearance, in 1964, when he shared Sullivan’s studio N IO T stage with The Beatles, Fred was given C E a talking spot, showcasing his innate LL CO sense of comedic timing.
