pics Kay Dennehy The recently held Blarney Policing Forum was well attended by over 50 members of the public and local business community, Superintendent Con Cadogan, Blarney Sergeant Dave Noonan, Blarney Community Garda Sean O’Dwyer, Cork County Council Representative Eugene O’Callaghan, Forum Chairman John Henchion and Secretary Kate Durrant, Cllr Pat Burton, Blarney Community Council Chairman Kevin Conway, Blarney Chamber of Commerce Chairman Damian Boylan and Blarney Tidy Towns Chairman Tom McGrath. Addressing the meeting Superintendent Cadogan was glad to state that crime statistics were decreasing in Blarney, in all areas except burglary which has seen a sharp increase. Blarney Garda Station is now out to tender and a budget of 1.267million is allocated. The proposed start date is May 1st, with an anticipated time frame of seven months. Sergeant Dave Noonan and Community Garda Sean O’Dwyer addressed all other public concerns, before Cllr Pat Burton dealt with council matters raised at the previous forum. Kevin Conway, Blarney Community Council, raised several issues of community importance and paid tribute to Cork County Council and Blarney Gardai for their help with littering and dumping issues. Tom McGrath raised concerns about the blocked shores throughout the village before Denis Murphy, Suicide Prevention Officer, closed the meeting with the launch of Blarney action for youth. The first cycle in 2003 had eighty cyclists.

One project, a rescue centre for street children in Nairobi, temporarily houses the children while resettling them back to family life and schools before successfully repatriating most with extended family. Another project in Kipsongo supports a community of 350 displaced families who have been living, and many dying prematurely, in houses made from scavenged waste. A women’s’ training scheme has revitalised the community and funding made it possible for them to build 2 room mud houses, greatly improving health and family life.
