Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind die taxonomischen Gruppen Noctuoidea, Bombycoidea, Drepanoidea und Axioidea. Die Fänge erfolgten überwiegend am Licht. Diese Region der Türkei ist trotz leichter Erreichbarkeit erstaunlich schlecht erforscht. Es gibt für die Provinz Mugla bisher fast keine Daten für Nachtfalterfänge. Die Untersuchung fand über alle Jahreszeiten und an insgesamt 456 Tagen statt. Es wurde anhand der insgesamt über 4400 registrierten Individuen eine grobe Klassifizierung der Häufigkeit vorgenommen. Insgesamt konnten 168 Arten festgestellt werden. Die Zahl von Arten, die trotz derart langer Anstrengungen nur einmal festgestellt wurden, ist mit 25 relativ hoch. Es daher zu erwarten, dass einige weitere hier nicht aufgeführte Arten vorkommen. Für eine Reihe der festgestellten Spezies existieren bisher nur wenige Nachweise aus der Türkei. Eine Art ist neu für das Land. Weiterhin kann bei einigen nahverwandten Arten ein Beitrag zur Klärung von Verbreitungsgrenzen geleistet werden, die z.T. gerade in Kleinasien unklar sind. Durch das vor allem in Sommer extrem heisse und trockene Klima und den milden Winter fliegen einige Arten früher als bekannt. Viele hingegen fliegen später in den Herbst und Winter hinein, so dass eine ganze Reihe von in der Literatur nicht bekannten Flugzeiten aufgezeigt werden kann. -

Trimmer* Department of Biology, 163 Packard Avenue, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155, USA *Author for correspondence ([email protected]) Accepted 26 March 2010 SUMMARY Soft-bodied animals lack distinct joints and levers, and so their locomotion is expected to be controlled differently from that of animals with stiff skeletons. Some invertebrates, such as the annelids, use functionally antagonistic muscles (circumferential and longitudinal) acting on constant-volume hydrostatics to produce extension and contraction. These processes form the basis for most theoretical considerations of hydrostatic locomotion in organisms including larval insects. However, caterpillars do not move in this way, and their powerful appendages provide grip independent of their dimensional changes. Here, we show that the anterograde wave of movement seen in the crawling tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, is mediated by co-activation of dorsal and ventral muscles within a body segment, rather than by antiphasic activation, as previously believed. Furthermore, two or three abdominal segments are in swing phase simultaneously, and the activities of motor neurons controlling major longitudinal muscles overlap in more than four segments. Recordings of muscle activity during natural crawling show that some are activated during both their shortening and elongation. These results do not support the typical peristaltic model of crawling, but they do support a tension-based model of crawling, in which the substrate is utilized as an anchor to generate propulsion. -

PÉREZ DE-GREGORIO SUMARY In this article, the 10 species of Axiidae and Thyatirinae of the lberian peninsula are revievved, giving the flying time with another interesting data. By this work, the total num- ber of species of Thyatirinae knovvn from the lberian peninsula is increased from 8 to 9. Tetheella fluctuosa is the new record (also a nevv genus for the peninsu la). The distribution in the catalan countries (Eastern part of the lberian península) is given based on bibliogra- phical data and specially on new data from different col lections and captures, moreover, maps of the area (U.T.M.) of the 7 rarest species and a colour picture vvith the 10 species are included. RESUMEN. En el presente artículo se revisan las 10 especies ibéricas de los gruposAxiidae y Thya- tirinae, señalando las épocas de vuelo y otros datos de interés. Con este trabajo, el número de los Thyatirinae conocidos en la península Ibérica se aumenta de 8 a 9. La especie nueva es Tetheella fluctuosa (género también nuevo). En base a la bibliografía, y, sobre todo, a da- tos inéditos obtenidos de la consulta de diversas colecciones y las nuevas capturas, se da la distribución en los Países Catalanes (zona oriental de la península Ibérica). Finalmente, se incluyen mapas UTM de la zona, de las 7 especies más raras, y una fotografía de color de las 10 especies tratadas. La família dels cimatofórids, sinonímia dels tiatírids, compta amb més d'un centenar d'espècies, de mida mitjana (de 30 a 40 mm d'envergadura alar) i de distribució preferentment paleartica. -

November 2014 ISBN 978-3-938249-06-2 Die nachtaktive Groß-Schmetterlingsfauna von Samos (Griechenland, Östliche Ägäis) (Lepidoptera: Cossoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea) Dieter FRITSCH, Günter STANGELMAIER, Morten TOP-JENSEN & Knud BECH Abstract Since 2008 15 collecting trips to Samos (Greek island in the Aegean Sea) have taken place for profound studies on the larger moths. Additionally to this numerous trips of the senior author to the island took place since 2002. More than fifteen specialists on larger moths from all over Europe were involved into this project. This is filling a big gap, for there are almost no reports at all in the past on the larger moths fauna in the Aegean Sea, except of Crete Island. Since 2005 seven species are reported as new to the European fauna: Polyploca korbi REBEL, 1901; Docirava musculata (STAUDINGER, 1892); Charissa subtaurica (WEHRLI, 1932); Caradrina agrotina STAUDINGER, 1892; Polymixis iatnana HACKER, 1996; Perigrapha cilissa PÜNGELER, 1917 and Chersotis obnubila (CORTI, 1926). Four new subspecies have to be added to the European fauna: Xylocampa mustapha hethitica KOBER & PINKER, 1976; Polymixis manisadjiani samomontensis FIBIGER, YELA, ZILLI & L. RONKAY, 2010; Luperina dumerilii hirsuta (WAGNER, 1931) and Standfussiana nictymera osmana (WAGNER, 1929). The first european records of Idaea textaria (LEDERER, 1861) and Charissa pfeifferi (WEHRLI, 1926) are reported. First stages of several larger moths have been found for the first time ever and are pictured: Polyploca korbi REBEL, 1901; Idaea determinata (STAUDINGER, 1876); Eupithecia reisserata PINKER, 1976; Eupithecia antalica MIRONOV, 2001; Catocala separata FREYER, 1848; Xylocampa mustapha hethitica KOBER & PINKER, 1976; Bryophila petrea (GUENÉE, 1852); Dryobotodes servadeii servadeii PARENZAN, 1982; Polymixis iatnana HACKER, 1996 and Hadena gueneei (STAUDINGER, 1901). -

Witt (* 2. 9. 1947, † 28. 1. 2019). Spixia- na 42 (2): 161-176. Prof. Dr. h. c. Dipl.-Kfm. Thomas J. Witt who deceased on 28 January 2019 was a great entomologist. He published 189 scientific papers including eight compre- hensive monographs and supported many other monographs as editor. He de- scribed hundreds of new species for science, financed and organized more than 100 collecting expeditions worldwide, and promoted 22 major research projects, usually participating in the research himself. Witt supported numerous young scientists and made many visits of guest researchers possible, in Munich and in other museums. He built up and established the world largest private research collection comprising about five million Lepidoptera, which in part were directly donated to the state of Bavaria, and in part were transferred into the public “Thomas Witt foundation”. Similarly, his great activities in the digitization of his collection including more than 3400 name bearing type specimens (accessible online under www.insecta-web.org/MWM/) are remarkable. The global scientific com- munity esteemed Thomas Witt for his outstanding achievements. In the year of 2001 the Zoologische Staatssammlung in Munich awarded him the “Ritter von Spix-Medal for outstanding scientific achievements”. In 2013 he received the title of Dr. -

The region has scarcely been investigated before. The majority of species have been recorded at light in Turunc near Marmaris. The research involved numerous nights during all seasons. The data are supplemented by findings from a number of additional locations within the province. While most species are reported by the author, existing records from literature are also included. Comments are added where deemed useful to discuss distribution, flight time, taxonomy or behaviour. In total 299 species are included. Two of them, Polymixis culoti (SCHAWERDA, 1921) and Conistra rubricans FIBIGER, 1997, are new for Turkey. Zoological Studies 46(3): 262-271. The family name Axiidae has been used both for decapod crus- taceans and the Lepidoptera. Having identified the correct authorships and publication dates of the crustacean Axiidae and lepidopteran Axiidae, it has become clear that the latter name should be treated as a junior homonym of the former. The name Anomalidae was occasionally used for this lepidopteran group but is not nomenclaturally available in the Lepidoptera (while Anomalini/-nae is a valid name in the Coleoptera) Cimeliidae Chrétien, 1916 is therefore the only family name that can be considered as valid for the taxa current- ly included in the lepidopteran Axiidae. A new superfamily name, Cimelioidea, is hereby formally proposed to replace Axioidea. This superfamily is tentatively assigned to“Geometromorpha”, but its phylogenetic relation- ships with the Calliduloidea,“butterflies”(= Hedyloidea + Rhopalocera), Drepanoidea, and Geometroidea (= Uranioidea) cannot be determined without a comprehensive phylogenetic backbone.
