MARTIN FLINT (1932 -2013)

Patron, President and Life Member

One of the main driving forces behind the club’s rise to its now pre-eminent standing in Canterbury cricket, Martin Flint, sadly passed away on October 12 2013 after a long battle with a debilitating illness.

Martin Ernest Williams Flint had been associated with the club for over 60 years, starting as a player in 1947 and ending as Patron, an honour he shared with another club stalwart Neil Ockwell.

Marty played mostly Second A cricket in his younger days but did manage 57 innings for seniors over 16 seasons starting from 1948 and he was a regular in President's grade for many years before pulling up stumps in 1985.

He was a Canterbury Brabin trialist and played for Canterbury B, but his most fulfilling moment was representing a Canterbury XI against an Australian team at Hagley Oval in the 1960s. Marty and Jack Kiddey shared a 70-run partnership to win the game and he recalled how proud he was to be clapped from the field.

Although he was a long-serving player for the club, Marty’s legacy to East Christchurch Shirley will remain his outstanding administrative duty, stretching from the lean years when the club was struggling for a home and for playing successes, through to the later years when the trophies began to come our way. Marty was first elected to the committee in 1963/64 and served continuously for the next forty years when he stepped down as President in 2003/04 due to health issues. Needless to say, he promptly agreed to be a Co- Patron when asked.

Marty oversaw the building of, or additions to, four clubhouses during his time, with perhaps his contribution to the 1979-80 structure the most laudable. This ambitious project saw the club move from a couple of small changing rooms on Burwood Park to a fine, two-storied structure that served us well for over two decades. This later formed the nucleus of the ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 4 current club-rooms. Not only did Marty dedicate many, many hours to fund-raising for the original building, but he was also Clerk of Works for the construction. As Trevor Hayes, the then President, recounts in our Centennial publication:

“We owe Martin a tremendous vote of thanks for his conscientious effort and for his time expended in overseeing the project and organising voluntary working bees on a regular basis throughout 1980.”

The facilities that a number of generations of East’s members have enjoyed over the last four decades are thanks to the tireless efforts of a group of dedicated members, of whom Marty was a key figure.

Marty was very much an active club member, who was involved in most aspects of club management. Besides being a long-serving committee member, he was also a CCA delegate and a selector. He was elected to life membership in 1986 – that honour was bestowed to wife Liz 10 years later – and he was a multiple winner of the club's main administrative awards.

As President, he didn’t step back from a hands-on involvement in running the club, mixing his formal duties with a continuing watchful eye on club operations, finances and management. As the Centennial report correctly observed:

“As well as being President, Martin was manning the bar and welcoming the junior teams that came to the pavilion each Saturday for their award presentations.”

One of Marty’s passions was horse-racing and the syndicates he was involved in enjoyed many successes. Maybe some of that luck also rubbed off on the club because during Marty’s time as President from 1998/9-2003/4, the Premier Men’s team enjoyed unprecedented successes. During this six-year period, he presided over three senior two- day trophy wins (including the first in 56 years), three one-day cups and five Hadlee trophies, plus one National Club Cricket Championship title.

Again, quoting the Centennial report:

“ Marty … was at the helm and happily riding every wave of success as East Christchurch- Shirley really came of age in the first grade in the late 1990’s. Martin was extremely proud and honoured to have presided over this unprecedented period of success.”

Marty, the Club was equally proud and honoured – and fortunate - to have had you as a club member, President and Patron for all those years.

The East Christchurch-Shirley Cricket Club offers its sincerest condolences to Liz and sons Andrew, Mark and John.

COMMITTEE OPERATIONS

At the 2013 AGM:

 John Grocott decided that it was time to hand over the President’s duties and Howard Morel was elected President. John had been President since 2006 – his second stint in office – and, his contribution over these years has been immense. Not only did he fulfil the President’s role but he has also been acting Treasurer for the last few years (and Treasurer for SSCL). Unfortunately for John, there were again no volunteers to take on the Treasurer’s role, and John agreed to continue as acting Treasurer. Thanks John. We would have been lost without you.

 Due to other commitments, Peter Dow stood down as Vice President and indicated that while he would continue as a member of the Committee, he would no longer continue as chair. He also withdrew as one of the club’s representatives on the SSCL board. Over the years, Peter has devoted a considerable amount of his time to club management, first being elected to the Committee in 1995, and has served as its Chair for the last 15 years. He was a key figure in the development of the new pavilion via our partnership with SRFC, and has served on the board of SSCL since its inception. While his calm guidance as Chairman is missed, we were fortunate to still have his presence on the Committee.

 There was a “changing of the guard” in the Women’s management positions this year. Hayley Jensen was elected Women’s Club Captain and Steve Graham Women’s Deputy Club Captain, replacing Megan Harkerss and Morna Neilsen respectively. Steve has done a lot of work coaching and promoting women’s cricket in the club over the last few years and it was good to have both him and Hayley on the Committee. Our thanks to Megan and Morna for their valuable contributions over the last few years.

 Other committee changes were the resignation of Jason Pawson and the election of Richie Papps, Matt Friedwald and Jared Roberts. Besides being a stand–out player on the field, Jason also made a major contribution off the field, having been on the Committee for the last seven years. Our thanks to him, and we wish him well in his new player-coach role at Heathcote.

At the first meeting Howard Morel was elected Chairperson of the committee.

Four subcommittees operated throughout the season. Their responsibilities are given below, with convenors as noted:

 Activities Subcommittee (social and cricket events, publicity and promotion; communications: convenor – Matt Richens)

 Business Subcommittee (finance, sponsorship & fund raising, subscriptions, planning & club management, membership, club records, liaison with SSCL board: convenor – Howard Morel)

 Cricket Subcommittee (training & coaching, player recruitment, team entries, grounds & practice facilities, gear, school liaison, awards, disciplinary; convenor – ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 6

Scott Pawson)

 Junior Subcommittee (managing the operations of the Junior cricket section; convenor – Henk Stoffers/Dave Teale)

Committee Attendances

During the year, until the printing deadline for this report, seven meetings were held and attendance is recorded below (with apologies tendered recorded in parentheses). Playing and work commitments affected the attendance record of a number of committee members. Nev Lyons was invited to attend meetings given his key role as Coaching Manager.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

With this being my first report as President, it is extremely satisfying to be able to report that we have the best One Day Club Cricket Team in the country. A very big congratulations to Nev Lyons, Tim Papps, Darren Broom and the team on this (possibly) unexpected achievement. This followed off the back of winning the One Day Competition after a difficult start. Well done to all that contributed.

Most of our teams were in the hunt for silverware as the season drew to a close, with the “Hooters” fulfilling their promise to go one better than last season. Well done men.

We welcomed a new team to the club this season and although they didn’t quite get the results that they would have wanted, a couple of amazing batting efforts saw P. Nagara scoring 150 and 133. I hope that you have enjoyed being part of our club.

Our Women’s section has struggled for numbers for a number of seasons and it is very pleasing to note that the girls have been competitive and are improving. Steve Graham must take much of the credit for ensuring that we have sufficient players. He also had a large hand in coaching and administering our girls, and in recognition Steve was rewarded with both the President’s award and the A J Orchard Trophy for outstanding administration.

Our Junior club continues to function well, led by Henk Stoffers and Dave Teale. They have again managed to ensure that we have good coaches and managers for our teams. We face many challenges associated with our geographic area and the impending closure of some of our feeder schools. There are no simple solutions but the passion of our coaches and managers along with a robust development plan should ensure players will both enjoy the experience of playing for Easts and become better players.

Hayley Jensen achieved selection to the White Ferns and has been given a professional contract by NZC. This is a huge reward for her hard work and a tribute to her obvious talent. Great result Hayley.

Representative honours also went to Leo Carter and Ken McClure who were selected for the New Zealand U19 team. Tim Johnston again made the Canterbury Wizards. We also had great representation in the Canterbury Magicians with Hayley Jensen, Hannah Malloch and Jacinta Savage.

To keep our club running many people contribute their time to ensuring that we have the facilities and expertise to succeed. Our committee has ensured that we have everything we need to continue to be successful. Thanks to all those who have given their time.

Our coaching resources led by Nev Lyons continue to produce talented players and Pete Dunnel, our grounds man, provides excellent playing and practice facilities.

Our social activities have slipped over the past few years and it is the committee’s goal to rectify this. We will be asking our members to get involved in planning and running the social events we need to fill the clubrooms.

A club survives by those joining taking an active role in both the playing game but also in inspiring others to get involved. As a number of us reach our use-by-date as players, we ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 9 need to continue to advocate for the Club and help to attract new members. We have a fantastic club, wonderful facilities and great people. With the World Cup here in the New Year it’s a great time to take advantage of the higher profile cricket will have.

I look forward to catching up with you all again next season.

COACHING AND SELECTION

Men’s Grades

Selectors Premier /2A grades: Captains & Nev. Lyons Other grades: Captains

Selection: Selecting teams is a time consuming task, and the two captains and coach were involved in quite lengthy discussions each week. Our intention was to put the best balanced teams on the field each week, with players having to earn their positions, and I believe this was usually achieved and the system worked well.

Pre-season, Tim Papps and I had several meetings over the winter discussing players and the make-up of the two sides. With the four players who were overseas developing their skills, and the three or four we were expecting back from University / school during the summer break, we had around 30 players for the two teams. It was good to have two new players, G. Powell and D. Broom, who added some experience back into the squad, and they, along with T. Papps, D. Lyons, C. Stevens and the younger players we had been developing for the last two or three years, gave us a strong foundation for the Premier side. The 2A team was also looking strong, with players capable of pressuring the top team.

Keys for success The success of the team is dependent on a number of factors, underpinned by the personal commitment of all the players to upgrade their skill base and to respect each other on and off the field. At the start of the season, the senior squad agreed to a set of protocols that provide a guide to the desired attitudes and behaviours that we expect and want to promote. The protocols include:

Visions:  Success for each other  Success with each other  Success for one another  Success with one another  Enjoy our success together  Enjoy the success of each other  Enjoy success with each other  Enjoy success for each other  Play positive and enjoy our cricket

Goals:  Setting of individual and team goals  Play to our potential  Prepare to win all trophies  All players to take responsibility to develop their own game  Take responsibility for your place  Create competition for all places  Enjoy each others’ successes more  Enjoy the moment and have fun with our team mates ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 13

 Play the game Positively and with Purpose and Consistency  Maintain the East Christchurch Shirley strong reputation gained over many years  Breeding ground for 1st class players  Leadership building  Leading cricket club in Canterbury

Pre-Season: Team coaching started for the senior squad in August with core training provided by John McCaw at his gym. There was an excellent turn out from members of the senior squad. Later in August, indoor skills training started at the CCA indoor centre. Again there was a very good turnout, which was important as the loss of our two most experienced players, R. Burson and J. Pawson, meant that this season’ players needed to step up to another level.

A pre-season highlight was the yearly weekend camp at Hanmer, designed to get to know each other and set down the team & squad protocols, goals and visions. This was a great weekend.

Practices: Practices were well attended on Tuesdays / Thursdays nights with Thursdays usually being a full attendance of 25 plus players. Practice decks and the Burwood main cricket block were excellent pre Xmas but later, in January, February and March, they became very flat. This places a premium on consistent line and length bowling, and is something our bowling group need to better address.

Premier Grade

One day competition: Compared to last year, there was a huge improvement in all skill areas, with all players fronting up with bat and ball. The side played as a team, and it was good to see the younger players displaying the maturity required to win games. The highlight for me was the standard of fielding set by this team, which improved each game, and this in turn helped our bowling group.

The East team played the final against Lancaster Park-Woolston, which on paper is the strongest cricket team in the current one-day competition, being stacked with NZ and Canterbury first class and “A” players. I believe the team’s victory was one of the finest East senior club one-day team performances that I have seen while I have been coaching at Easts. Hats off to all the players. The outstanding club supporters on the day were a key factor towards this fantastic win.

Two day competition: This was a disappointing campaign as we struggled to win games. This was made more difficult with the loss of three senior players with injuries and another two heading to Otago University. While this made the task harder, there was a positive in that it gave a number of new younger players an opportunity to play the longer version of the game at Premier level.

While there were some excellent moments and performances during this competition, I felt that after the one-day final, having achieved our first goal, our attitude dropped off at times. One or two lapses in key games kept us from getting the results we wanted, which was disappointing. Playing as a unit is the key to success and this will develop over time – indeed, this was clearly shown in our end of season success at the National Club Championships.

ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 14

National Club Championships: By winning the one-day competition, the Premier side qualified as the Canterbury representative at this excellent tournament, held at the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland in April 2014.

To help fund the trip to Auckland, the team ran a few fund raising projects, with a quiz night at the club, raffles and the travelling squad coaching junior players in a three-week CJCA programme on Sunday mornings. It was a delight to watch the team working together, delivering an East Christchurch skill based package to many Canterbury under age players.

The team that went to Auckland was a competitive one: manager D. Lyons, captain T. Papps, D. Broom, C. Stevens and J. Cookson, were senior team leaders who had attended this tournament before, and they, along with several exciting younger players gave us a good, balanced side. The exciting part for me was that each day the protocols we had worked on were evident, with individuals playing as a team, and supporting each other both on and off the field. Each day, a different individual or group would put their hand up. I felt that if we could become the best fielding side, we had a very good chance of making the final and so it transpired. The hard work done over the season really paid off, with comments from umpires saying this East team was the best fielding team at this tournament.

The final was an outstanding performance with the team’s self-belief seeing it achieve its final goal, one that was originally set back at the pre-season Hanmer camp. A fantastic result for both the team and club. The team and supporters celebrated into the late hours of the night and made sure the guys retiring enjoyed the night. One disappointment was that Captain Tim Papps couldn’t be there to party with his team, as he had to fly out to Fiji the night before. This was Tim’s second NCC trophy as captain, and a victory also shared by five other members of this group.

There were many impressive individual performances over the week, but I believe that it was the whole package we had that saw us triumph, including key components such as club culture, squad make up, leadership, self-belief, working hard and, not to be overlooked, our team supporters. At Auckland we had around twenty-one supporters, including “local” ex club players who came along to support, as well as the group that went up from Christchurch. This support was outstanding and appreciated by the management and players.

2A Grade Team

This team had an excellent season and they were well lead by J. Cookson and M. Goode, who are emerging as quality leaders. For much of the year we had surplus players available most weeks and were only short late in the season due to injuries and players heading to university. The 2A team is a major component of our senior squad. Both teams train together, with the aim being to develop skills in all players and create genuine competition for the places in the Premier side.

The 2A team performed well, and also had their chances to win the trophies across the three different competitions in the grade. The highlight for me was the further development of the different talents and disciplines of the younger players, which is encouraging for the future.

Other club teams

Congratulations to the Hooters who won their competition and the prestigious club “team of the year” award. This team trains hard every Wednesday night and has developed a great ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 15 team and club culture. This was a cracking season, boys, so let’s make sure you are back to defend that title.

The new team we had playing 3B were a great group of lads to coach on Wednesday night and I enjoyed giving them some basic skills training. It is clear they enjoy the game and I hope they are back again next season, and will also be more a part of our club.

Women’s Premier Grade:

This is a young side that is still developing, and I am sure they will become a real club title contender in the coming years. I have seen them improving every year. They have talent to burn and, with a greater commitment to training as a full group so they can develop their culture, I’m sure they will succeed. Led by the young and talented NZ player Haley Jensen and Canterbury player Jacinta Savage, they have the potential to become a great team.

Final word

To the four members of the Premier side who won’t be playing this coming year: I would like to thank you for your time and effort over many years. We’ve had some great times together and achieved many titles, and it has been a pleasure to coach you. My thanks to Garfield, and all the junior club management and coaches for their time and effort. My thanks to Pete Dunell, the clubs ground curator: I worked closely with Pete and he made sure we always had good practice blocks and main , which really helped our development. Also a special thanks to club management and our loyal group of family supporters who all help to develop our wonderful club culture.

PREMIER GRADE

As reported last year, we had been rebuilding the senior squad for a couple of seasons. Although results had not necessarily gone our way during this period, the 2013/2014 season was when we were going to make our statement, and re-establish the side as a force in Christchurch club cricket once again.

We looked to create a new culture this season and this started back in August with the implementation of fitness training. A big thanks to John McCaw from Primal Fitness for getting us up to scratch in the fitness stakes. Although the sessions were tough, the boys who attended were all the better for it. We concluded our pre-season with a trip to Hanmer for some team building exercises. The two people who took the bull by the horns during this trip were Leo Carter with his AB work and Ken McClure with his longevity on the night out.

Enter the season proper and to use an old sausage head cliché, this was a season of two halves.

We started the season with a loss to LPW but we showed enough in that game to give me confidence moving into the rest of the round robin play. From there the season took off for us. We played the rest of the round robin with only one more loss and a rained out game to secure a semi-final against Canterbury Country at Sefton. We played well in the semi in trying conditions and were able to come out on top defending a modest score on a flat pitch. On to the final against LPW.

This game was played with plenty of feeling. We batted first and scored a modest 200. We were tracking well and made regular inroads into their batting order. It came down to the last over in which we secured the win and partied into the night with the players and supporters. We had performed well throughout the one day campaign and this was the cherry on the top.

Bowling was the key in our one-day success and the ability to restrict runs and regularly take wickets helped the team no end. Notable performers with the ball were Jared Roberts, Jared Van Eyk Menkman and Gareth “Gary” Powell, who took 18, 17 and 16 wickets respectively. Also of mention was Jed’s 5/28 in the semi-final on a clear, calm day in Sefton. Batting-wise, Ken McClure and Darren Broom did the damage, with Ken averaging over 40. Jared Roberts also did well he scored 18 runs and hit a 6.

Enter the two-day part of the season. After the euphoria of collecting the one-day title, it was always going to be hard for the boys to back up. We struggled in the two-day competition, not performing to our best, and we languished near the bottom of the table which is something we will address come pre-season. The boys, however, were still upbeat and will benefit from another two-day cricket season under their belts.

Notable performers in the two-day competition were Tim Johnston collecting 18 wickets, Will Otte with 17 wickets and Dexter Marsh getting 7/58 against Burnside West in one of the great spells of bowling I’ve been witness to on Burwood 1.

In the batting department Darren Broom and Tim Hampton-Matehe made solid contributions along with Tim Johnston. I also had the great honour of being dismissed on 99 for the first time in my senior career, which was nice.

For those of you who didn’t know, we travelled to Auckland for the National Club Champs in early April. Although we didn’t discuss it much prior to travelling there, the season was built on our one-day success and confidence was high travelling to Auckland.

We started the tournament well with a big win over Albion (Otago) which saw Leo “Abs’ Carter smash a century and hammer Mark Craig over the boundary several times, to which Mark Craig was rewarded with a test cap.

Second game saw a nail-biter, against Pukekoe-Metro (ND). We struggled early with the bat when chasing, until Ken McClure compiled the innings of the week and secured the win off the last ball. Two from Two, and the boys were loving it.

Day 3 saw us lose to Suburbs-New Lynn by a fair amount We struggled to keep a lid on their rep players and subsequently were beaten convincingly. This saw us still in the hunt for the final however.

Day 4 we played Greytown (CD) We blew them off the park and were set for a record score in not only the NCCC but also East Shirley history. The rain came however and we only got to bat 32 overs. Although they gave it a good go, our tight bowling meant they were never really in it. A resurgence of Gary Powell saw him capture four cheap wickets to lead our charge into the final two days.

Day 5 saw us lose again, this time to Eastern Suburbs (WLG). They were tournament favourites but not favourites of any other team or support crew. After this game we were informed we had finished third in the competition, but after much debate and recount of run rates it was shown that we had in fact finished second. We were in the final!

In the final day, we bowled first, and restricted the Eastern Suburbs team to just over 130. This was to be a tough chase with their bowling attack, but achievable. After a few early speed bumps and some dubious umpiring we managed to scrape home after a career defining innings by Ben Hanham. The East Shirley team was National Champions again after last winning in 2011.

I’d like to firstly thank the players from the Senior Squad this year for buying into the culture and making my job easier as Captain. Also the long list of supporters who not only travel locally to support, but also up to Auckland for the week of the tournament.

I’d like to thank Nev for his coaching this year and to DJ for his management work in Auckland in between boat shopping.

Lastly to the boys retiring this year. You know who you are and thanks for all your help as senior players and contributors over the years. Good luck in retirement and I look forward to seeing you all playing Pressies in years to come.

(Northern Districts)

Day 1: East Shirley 255/10 (Leo Carter 117, Tim Papps 52, Nick Beard 4/33, Michael Snedden 3/33) BEAT Albion 238/10 (JR Glenn 53, Nick Beard 49, Chris Harris 53, Tim Ford 45, Jared Roberts 3/51, Dexter Marsh 4/35) by 17 runs.

Day 2: Pukekohe-Metro 205/10 (Kevin Farrell 30, Jonathon Keen 56, Corey Hunter 42) LOST TO East Shirley 208/9 (Ken MClure 57*, Ash Vodnala 4/36) by 1 wicket. ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 20

Day 3: Suburbs-New Lynn 253/10 (Jeet Raval 138) BEAT East Shirley 199/10 (Ken McClure 41, Hamish Teale 37, Jared Cookson 37, Josh Presland 3/36) by 54 runs.

Day 4: East Shirley 267/7 (Tim Papps 88, Chris Stevens 72, Darren Broom 46*, G. Reisima 3/45, S.Coleman 2/29) BEAT Greytown 162 (Gareth Powell 4/29, Darren Broom 2/29) by 105 runs.

Day 5: Eastern Suburbs 272/10 (J. Brodies 60, A. Fullerton-Smith 53, Dexter Marsh 4/71, Jed Roberts 2/65, Gareth Powell 2/34, Leo Carter 2/28) BEAT East Shirley 145/10 (Tim Papps 46, Ken McGlure 45) by 127 runs.

Final:

Eastern Suburbs 135/10 (Gareth Powell 4/20, Jared Roberts 3/26) LOST TO East Shirley 136/8 (Tim Hampton-Matehe 46, Ben Hanham 41*) by 2 wickets.

“Eastern Suburbs once again won the toss and decided to bat first in the final of the NZCT National Club Champs. Things started on a bad note when Jeremy Dean top edged a pull shot first ball of the innings and a good catch was taken running back by Ben Hanham. None of the East’s batsman really got going today and at 5/55 things weren’t looking very promising. They battled away and managed to get 135 in the end. There was some really good tight bowling in the middle overs by the medium pacers. Gareth Powell was the pick of the bowlers with 4/20 off his ten overs.

Proud sponsors of a champion club.

ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 21

In reply East Shirley were on the back-foot from the outset and were in deep trouble at 5/34. A crucial 50 run partnership from Hampton-Matehe and Hanham made things a lot easier for the men from Christchurch. Some lower order help was needed to get them over the line in a very nerve-wracking low scoring game. Ben Hanham saw his team home and was a well-deserved winner of the man of the match award.”

2A GRADE

It was an up and down campaign for the Second Grade team in 2013/14.

We started off the season with the one-day competition and a beautiful spring day at Burwood Park, the home of cricket, greeted the troops. Unfortunately, we were all bundled out for less than a hundred and were fairly well beaten after a brave fight with the ball. That was a bit of a precursor for the first third of the season, as the side battled with the bat and were out of the running far too early. One exception and highlight of the one-dayers was a brilliant, unbeaten century from Tim Hampton-Matehe against LPW, helping us to our first win and a sixth place finish.

Late form in the one-day competition gave the boys some confidence going into the and with a couple of good all round performances we found ourselves in the final against Second Grade’s top dogs, Old Boys. In a low scoring, controversial encounter, we looked to be heading to a deserved victory. However, it wasn't to be as some dodgy tactics by our good mates from Elmwood saw us just beaten in a last over heart breaker.

The final half of the year saw the two-day competition take centre stage. In the new year, we were scraping to field 11 players for various reasons but that didn't hinder the results. After sweeping Sydenham aside, thanks to a brutal Matthew Goode century, we faced Old Boys. The first day had the two teams even, but a brilliant bowling display by the East’s lads at the beginning of day two, led by the ever consistent Kyle Knowles, left us chasing only 65 to win. We knocked the runs off as rain set in, a victory that gave us a real shot at the two- day crown.

More outrights followed (except the St Albans disaster that we won't talk about) and a win in the final game against old rivals LPW would give us the title. After taking first innings honours on day one, a slightly below-par second day effort left us short of the 180 target set – and, unfortunately, short in our bid for a first trophy. Another second place finish.

A brave effort all season by the often undermanned 2A boys. Each player had a good performance or two to help the cause. Special mentions for: Chris Batchelor, who had a great two-day campaign with the bat and was also consistent with the ball; Kyle Knowles who had an outstanding season opening the bowling and really shaping the nut!; Hayden Clark (Dorsilllllll!) was a wicket-taking machine during the one-dayers, plus he broke a window with a six; and Jeremy Duncan who made batting look easy during his spell with the side. Also, for Des O'Leary, our overseas import, who threw around some Irish banter.

Our thanks go to coaches Nev and Garfield for their time, Scott Bates who became a regular fill in, along with many others, including some of the Hooters lads, who helped us field eleven players during a difficult stretch. Shout out to Jessica Thompson our number one (and possibly only?) supporter.

Hoping to go one better next season, here’s cheers.

3A GRADE

It may have taken sixteen years, but in 2013/14 the Hooters achieved the ultimate success of being crowned Grade champions for the first time.

In a season that can be deemed extremely successful for the 3A side, we played 22 matches, recording 19 wins, two losses, and a tie. We completed the top four playoff series unbeaten, turned around the result of last year’s final, and recorded emphatic victories against our closest rivals along the way.

To top all of this off, we were named East Shirley Team of the Year, for the second year running.

Tasked with writing this report, I’ve been reminded that the first thing I need to do is thank our ever expanding army of supporters correctly, as Matt Richens admits he didn’t quite do the job well enough in last year’s report. Indeed, it would be remiss of me not to thank all of our supporters that either come down to see our matches, or support via social media from afar. Burwood Park can be a pretty cold and windy place in the shadows of the poplars, yet there is always a crew with us braving the elements, armed with blankets, puffer jackets, and sushi. Thank you for allowing and encouraging us to keep playing the game. We try to play exciting and dynamic cricket (EADC), so we hope you enjoyed our games.

In the aftermath of last year’s final loss, a number of us retired….…… then un-retired. Richard Papps also stepped down from captaincy and a replacement was eventually found. We were back for another season, but the approach initially was slightly different; we weren’t focused on the title, but more upon trying to enjoy our cricket and making sure we had a cold beer, and a warm sausage.

A similar squad to the previous year was available; however some minor tweaks and a few additions to the roster seemed to make a huge difference. The balance of the side was fantastic, and it made the captaincy job a breeze. Among the differences to our game this year was:  James Ogier, a life time leg spinner who turned up to the first training as a seam bowler. It seemed a plan destined for failure; however after cleaning me up time and again in the nets, I thought it might just work. James bagged 37 wickets @ 11.8; a team record and was the winner of the Afternoon Bowler award.  The addition of Russell Rhodes, Michael Ford, and Karl Smith (again) to the squad added depth and skill to all areas of our game.  Matt Friedwald took on a new role and stepped up to become our permanent opening and death bowler.  Rob Leys performed the way we’ve come to expect. While we’ve always thought of him as a single-spell specialist, he had a go at breaking up his spells to put pressure onto both halves of our opponent’s innings. It worked a treat and his performance in the final especially, was magical. ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 29

 Jase Riach was used as a new ball bowler at times last season. This time around he became more of a death bowler. Swinging the old ball with a little pace was a bit too much for many 3A batsmen, and his figures are fantastic. Unfortunately Jase blew out a hamstring three weeks from the final, which was not part of the plan.  Matt Richens had a fabulous return with the bat this season, saving his best score of 95 for the semi-final, and an overall return of 419 @ 32.  Best of all though, Richard Papps was a huge catalyst for our success. Being the sole slow bowler made his achievements even more significant. 32 wickets @ 13.7 was outstanding, and his post-Christmas batting saved us time and again, including 70 in the semi-final and 49* in the final. He scored 452 runs @ 37.7, three fifties, topped the batting averages, hit the most sixes. Richard rightfully won the Players Player, and Afternoon All-Rounder awards.

To the on-field action.

The 3A competition is rather unique, and slightly arduous. Made up of ten teams, we play two round-robins before splitting into a top four, for yet more round-robin, and then a knock out semi and final.

It quickly became clear that three sides had an edge on the competition, and our four round- robin matches against our closest rivals, OBC Team Boon, and The Predators pretty much ensured that we would be competing in the semifinals. With that, I’d like to expand on these six performances.

OBC Team Boon. In October, on a nice BWD2 wicket, we won the toss and batted first. Opening pair Dylan Mabey and Jase Riach put on a hundred for the first wicket. Jase completed a stylish hundred on our way to an impressive 238/4. Our bowlers hit their targets, OBC failed to reach 3 figures in reply, and the winning margin was in excess of 150. The return fixture in January saw us bowling first, and once again our bowlers tightened the screws. We knocked them over cheaply and recorded a comfortable 5 wicket win.

Old foe, The Predators were encountered in the first ever T20 fixture for us. Heavy overnight rain made for a tricky surface, and, with us still carrying some baggage from last year’s final, losing the toss and being inserted was not ideal. The Predators bowling attack is their strength, and while having us in trouble we managed to scramble through to an un-T20 like score of 110/8. This proved to be enough, but only through the heroics of everyone, except perhaps Rob Leys, because Rob is ‘too old’ for T-20. Russell Rhodes isn’t too old though and his 4/12 was amazing, as was the death bowling from Ogier and Friedwald. The Predators only managed 109/9; a satisfying one run win.

The second encounter in January was a much more complete performance from us. On a classic BWD2 batting road, the sort that deserves a 300 run total, The Predators only made 174. Our bowlers, in particular James Ogier, were immense. When it was our turn to bat, the accurate bowling of The Predators was less effective on a great surface. We cantered to a 5 wicket win, and started to focus on the finals.

Qualifying first gave us home advantage in the semi-final and we played Richmond on a good BWD2 track. Missing some of our household names, there were flutters when early wickets fell. However Matt Richens and Richard Papps stood up with their highest scores of the season to get us through to an impressive 252/6. Once again our bowling stocks held ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 30 strong and Richmond were 149 runs behind when the last wicket fell. Richard again played the familiar janitor role, picking up 3 for none.

So, onto a repeat of last year’s final …… except, this time, we were on BWD2, we won the toss, and we had Michael Ford.

The wicket wasn’t quite as good as the previous week, but we still put together an excellent batting performance. Jase and I bunted the new ball, and Richard and Russell closed the innings in style. It was almost to plan, except for the small matter of 6 quick wickets in the middle, including an excellent hat trick, and a déjà vu run out. Regardless, 191/6 in a final, on that wicket was a superb effort, and it was over to our bowlers.

Our bowling effort in reply was breathtaking. Rob Leys was as good as he has ever been; Michael Ford scared the batsmen, and even struck one particular gentleman with a thunderbolt to the jaw; Russell Rhodes was impossible to get away; and James Ogier stepped up under pressure for a single over at the death to seal the match. It’s worth mentioning that these four bowlers all bowled from the one end, and collectively conceded about 50 runs from 20 overs, to give us the result that we deserved.

Overall it was a long slog of a season, which was defined well by our performance in the final. The reward of getting our hands on a trophy is fantastic, and it’s an honour to bring silverware back to the club.

PRESIDENTS BLUE

For the fifth season now, I’ve had the privilege to have captained the team and to be able to write the season report. The mix of ages, backgrounds and abilities makes for a diverse and interesting team. Hopefully everyone was able to participate to the level of their satisfaction.

The 2013/14 season was tough going, with the standard of the grade getting appreciably more competitive. In the face of stronger teams we had to marshal our resources accordingly. Most of the time we battled away, and it was good of the guys to keep giving it their best shot. We thankfully had a couple of wins to avoid the wooden spoon, and were in some strong positions in four other games without finishing the job off. I’ve had counseling.

The two wins we had were both close ones against the Hospital team, with whom games in good spirit are always played. The first occasion was a one-off 20/20 game that went down to the last ball, with Easts prevailing by two runs in an evenly paced contest. The second win came about after losing seven early wickets in a modest run chase, with the winning margin being two wickets.

The notable season performance was Chris Bradley bringing up his maiden ton, at home, to help the team post a very respectable effort trying to chase down a large score. Batting- wise, the challenges faced were reflected in Bernard Rose (three fifties) being the only batsman to have an average in the twenties. Other batting highlights were Nick Cottam’s half century in our 20/20 game, and emerging high school talent Casey Marsh, who made a stylish 97 in the first game after Christmas. Thanks Nev!

Kasun Dandeniya and Sudath Wijewardene weren’t always allowed to play their natural attacking games, but did see the side home in the second Hospital win. Colin Viegas gave solid support to Bernard at the top of the order. Yours truly simultaneously accumulated the most not outs and inflicted the most run-outs on others (oops). Three new players joined the team at various stages of the season, Tony Chester, Don Vattala and Kevin Patterson, which will help us keep going for next season.

For the bowling, Brian Cairns led the wicket count, with Angus McLeod not far behind and leading the strike rate. Kasun and Rajeev Varma had the best economy rates. David Hearn took enough part-time wickets to help bring up a notable milestone of 450 club wickets.

Thanks to the guys who got various family and friends to help out when we were short of players. Our appreciation again also goes to Anne McLeod for scoring for the whole game when Angus played (not the reason he was selected).

Most of the guys are returning for the upcoming season in some fashion or another to give it a crack all over again. Looking forward to it – this time as the off-field organizer.

PRESIDENTS GOLD

The 2013/14 season was another eventful year of cricket for the Presidents Gold side. We had retained the nucleus of players from previous seasons and people were fit and raring to go in October. Unfortunately, this had waned by November.

The grade has changed in recent seasons and there are new teams who are very strong and competitive, and others who have regenerated and are increasingly competitive. This meant we were very pleased with our start to the season. We had only lost one game at the Christmas break to the eventual champions St Albans and were sitting at the top of the table.

This was particularly pleasing as we had a number of unavailability’s over the first part of the season. Injury and other commitments stripped us of a number of players and we were fortunate to pick up three players from Sumner, who had withdrawn from the grade. Garry Hooper, until a knee injury terminated his playing, Dave McConnell, and Steve Booth became regular players in our team and helped booster our playing stocks. Without these three we may have struggled to continue. They helped us achieve some good wins against Merivale-Papanui, one of the stronger sides in the grade, who we bowled out for 47; Hornby, where we scored 270/5 with Alan Hemingway scoring 120; and Burnside-West University, previous year’s champions, where Garry Hooper had a strong all round performance.

Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain our momentum after the Christmas break. Losses to Merivale-Papanui twice, Burnside-West University, Sydenham and St Albans meant that we slipped off the pace. We lost key players such as Marc Wells, Alan Hemingway and Steve Barry to injury and unavailability, and at times we struggled for runs without their input. Those three were the mainstay of our batting along with Craig Gibb who once again had a superb season and scored 701 runs at 41. Week in week out Craig is the best batsman in the grade and it is a pleasure to watch him bat. Steven Daly had a strong all round performance with 249 runs at 28, 26 wickets at 13 and 10 catches. Supporting him was Dave McConnell who scored 327 runs at 25 and 13 wickets at 15. The usual suspects, Howard Morel, John Robson, Alan Albertson, Niven Boyle and Steve Sharman also played well throughout the season.

Overall, it was an enjoyable season. At times we did not play as well as we might have hoped, but we are incredibly competitive and I was really proud of the way we played our cricket. We play well, compete with all teams and enjoy each other’s company on and off the field. We are privileged to play a lot of our games at Burwood Park which is a great place to play. Finally, a big thank you to Donn Leckie who remains the Manager extraordinaire. He always has time to select the team, pulls players out of a hat when we are short, and organises us on a Saturday. Without him we would really struggle.

I look forward to seeing you all again in October.

PREMIER GRADE

Undoubtedly, the highlight of this year for the Premier Women was Hayley Jensen playing her first games for the New Zealand White Ferns, and competing in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. Hayley is a worthy all-rounder used mainly as a right-arm medium pace bowler for NZ. At 21 years, she has now played two ODI’s against West Indies, debuting at ‘home’ in Lincoln, and in T20’s she’s already played the West Indies, Australia, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Ireland, with the only loss at the start of her NZ career being against South Africa.

Hayley helped the Premiers start the season well. The team were at the top of the table right up until the last round-robin game of the season. Premier women play 50-over games, although one game on 22 February carrying full points was reduced by the CCA to a 20- over game with an earlier start, so that we could travel to Lincoln to see Hayley play her debut game for NZ.

Last year the Premiers won just four games. This year they lost just four games, including the final against St Albans, and there was one tie, with OBC. Three of the losses were against Saints; one against LPW.

The first game against Saints, a 15-run win to Easts on Burwood 2, must stand out as the game of the season. There were steady top-order contributions, with top-scorers Hayley (26) and Alyssa Millard (23no). Then knocking Saints’ top-order off won the game (by Hayley 2/27 and Amy Rendel 1/10) followed up by Jacinta Savage taking 4 for 15, including the prize wicket of White Fern Amy Satterthwaite (43).

Another game stands out, not because of the game itself, but where it was played, on Burwood 1. It would be Jacinta’s first game on 1, and Amy’s third perhaps. The opposition were the new and young Sydenham Premiers team. Easts were in trouble at 24 for 4, but Hayley batting at no 3 scored 105no, sharing good partnerships with Hannah Malloch (31) and Amy (72). Easts’ 297 for 9 was easily defended, with Sydenham bowled out for 115. Hannah did most of the top-order damage with 4 for 18. Hannah would go on to make her debut for the Canterbury Magicians, another season highlight for the Premiers.

Other highlights were in-swinger Gina Aldersley’s 7 for 14 in the first game; out-swinger Olivia McGoverne’s 7 for 18 the following week; Hayley’s 116no in a 169 run partnership with Jacinta (67) on Elmwood; Jacinta and Sandy Clark both scoring 90 each in a 175 run opening stand; and Mikaela Dawson’s first wicket in her first Premiers game (1 for 8).

The Premiers have had a great season, beyond all expectations, especially considering that White Ferns Sara McGlashan and Morna Nielson both returned to the North Island before the season started. Also, Megan Daly (nee Harkerss) retired as a player and Women’s Club Captain after many years of service to Easts, although she graciously accepted a request to play one game at the end of the season.

So, at the start of the season Easts were left with some large shoes to fill. The team would be young, captained by Hayley with Jacinta as vice-captain. Hayley was also elected Women’s Club Captain and Stephen Graham Deputy Women’s Club Captain. Steve joined the club’s committee and rejoined the CCA’s Women’s Advisory Group to ensure the women’s section was represented.

The Premiers welcomed back Amy, Hannah played more games this season between Otago University lectures, Ellis Bowerman was a new player whose bubbly personality and quick ECSCC Annual Report 2013/14 Page 39 reactions lifted the team’s spirits and fielding ability, and Sam Case contributed maturity as opener for many games. Venetia Stoffers’ all-round skill is worthy of her place in Premiers cricket, and Jess Davidson’s leg-spin and batting took great strides up to Premier quality this season. The team also benefits from the all-round skill of Daisy Tredinnick and Jess Costello, both very good fielders and handy with bat and ball.

The Premiers also thank Hayley Moore of the Div1/2 team, as she willingly filled in for the Premiers six times. The Premiers also thank Jacinta for taking on leadership responsibilities following Hayley Jensen’s selection for the White Ferns, not just as captain. Jacinta had to take on so much herself, stepping up to open and anchor innings with bat and ball, then figure out when she’ll keep. Finally, after the end of the final, finding out what it’s like to be interviewed by the Press, without warning, with a microphone. Not bad for a young lady who’s just finished high school.

Jacinta would go on to be named Women’s Club Cricketer of the Year in the Christchurch Metro Cricket Association’s awards night. Gina was awarded The Felton Trophy for taking the most wickets in Women’s Premier one day cricket, and Hayley Jensen the Jean Ruddenklau Trophy for showing consistency in both women’s club and representative cricket. All thoroughly deserved the recognition.

This team is young and talented. They made the Club competition final, and had one White Fern and four other players were either Magicians, U21 or U17 Canterbury reps. Further success and potential for higher honours in future seasons is virtually guaranteed.

DIVISION 1-2 GRADE

This season was a difficult one for Easts below Premier level.

Three seasons ago we had three teams: Premiers, Div1 and Div2. This year we started the season with half a team below Premier level, with captain Wendy Fuller, vice-captain Hayley Moore, Melissa and Rachel Sloan, and Mikaela Dawson. We succeeded in fielding a team due to buddying-up with LPW’s bit of a team, and due to the ‘bye team’ in the section lending us players most weeks. We are grateful therefore to Sydenham, OBC and Saints for lending us players, and to the CMCA for allowing us to field teams in this manner. As the season headed toward its end we were plagued with injury and having to lend players up to Premiers due to their injuries and absences.

The one genuine win was a 35 over game against Ashburton College at Centennial Park, when the joint team with LPW players worked well. In that game, Easts scored 93, due mainly to Wendy’s 35. Easts then restricted Ashburton to 88, due to Hayley’s 4 for 8 and Mikaela’s 3 for 21. Unfortunately most of the young LPW players didn’t commit their Saturdays to the game.

The only other win was a T20 against Riccarton at Warren Park, with a lot of help from the bye team Sydenham. Easts (Melissa) scored 8 of the 98 runs required; Sydenham got the rest. Melissa threw down a run-out in that February 22 game, which was interrupted briefly for a minute’s silence at 12.50pm.

For the last three games of December the Kirsty Bond series was played. There are no Premier Women’s games during those three weeks while the Magicians’ are playing. The rest of the Premier Women were allowed to play ‘down’ in the Div 1 Kirsty Bond series. Easts had a win and a loss, and the last game was abandoned in the return innings due to rain, which stopped by the time everyone was in their cars. The win was against OBC at St Albans Park, and seemed to have gone the way of OBC who scored a solid 159 for 4 in their 30 overs. But OBC had no answer for the strong batting display from Olivia McGoverne (53no), Daisy Tredennick (32) and Venetia Stoffers (27). Jess Costello (1no) popped in for the winning run.

One pleasing aspect of the second half of the season was that some of the girls from the junior team ES-12 played a game or two. Junior player of the year Ashley Whittaker took her first Div1/2 wicket, on Elmwood Park, Ella Daly took a fantastic high catch in the covers in the same game, and Ella Griffiths scored 8 at Clare Park.

The challenge for next season is to find more girls in their early teens to join the club, so that Easts can field a full Div1/2 team.

JUNIOR REPORT

First of all, I’d like to thank the coaches and parents for again helping to make this season a successful one.

Teams Numbers this season were slightly down, but we still had sixteen teams. Again, we were able to field a Premier side and my thanks to Chris Manson and Peter Costello for looking after that team. One sad note was that we were unable to form an all-girls team this season, but the mixed team we fielded did well, and a special thanks to Steve Graham who coached them, along with the help from parents. Thanks also to Mark Jackson and John Grocott who again ran the Have a Go program, which is where our budding players make their start down the cricket pathway.

There were some special performances during the season, notably: Nepia Crowe who scored 110 runs plus four 50’s; hat-tricks for Ben Booth 3/13 ,Tyler Levington 5/26 , Daniel Costello 3/16, Tom Mc Donald 3/15 and Finn Pickering 3/2; and 5 wicket bags for Shamus McCulloch 5/1 &5/11 and Bradley Prescott 5/14. To you all, well done.

And to all the players – I hope you enjoyed the cricket with your team-mates and that you will all be back to try again next season.

Sponsorship We were again fortunate to have a number of sponsors this season – their generous help was much appreciated. My thanks to Cricket Express, O’Sheas, Maharajah Restaurant, Subway Parklands, Shirley Hells Pizza and McDonalds and I hope they will again be able to support us in the coming season.

Also a special thanks to Barry the Batman for donating stumps and keeping our bats in good nick. And thanks to Cathy Pawson for the awesome job washing the shirts

Representative players This year the club had some very good representative players in the Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8 teams. The selected players did very well and I hope to see them, and others, perform as well next season. I would encourage parents to nominate their sons and daughters for the trials.

Prize-giving The prize giving on the Sunday at season’s end was a great success. Many thanks to the helpers who make it happen, to the sponsors for donating prizes for the raffle and to the bar staff for opening the bar so parents had a good afternoon. This type of event when we all come together to celebrate our successes should happen more often.

Administration

First, my thanks again to my good friend Dave Teale who did a sterling job this year. I would be lost without him. We had a challenging year trying to put the right players in the right teams and, in the end, I think it turned out o’k. Sometimes, I think the hardest part is to convince parents that we are doing it for the kids and that every player needs a chance to play regularly so that they can enjoy the game and improve. Our aim for this year is to keep team numbers at a minimum so all players get regular game time, preferably in their team of choice. So, to parents, register early before sides are selected as this will both help us to know player numbers and team entries, and increase the chances of players being in their first choice side. I also think it’s important that your kids play in their correct school years - they can’t get to the Black Caps any quicker!

Again thanks to Sue, Hamish, Carol, Venetia and Reuben for helping us during the year and especially to Carol for writing the certificates on the Saturdays.

Finally, I hope you all – players and parents - had a great season and that we’ll see you all back next year. If you have any ideas or suggestions to make our Junior programme more successful and enjoyable, then don’t be shy: all ideas and offers of assistance are welcome. The Junior Programme can’t operate without parent help, and if any of you have the interest and time to assist, then please come forward.

I hope to see you all back in 2014/2015.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Club’s finances continue to be a challenge. The accounts are subject to audit at the time of writing.

This year we have incurred a small loss of $2014 compared to a larger loss of $9891 last year. This is the seventh loss in eight years - a situation of concern which is not sustainable. Although income is up due mainly to an increase in income from fundraising and grants, expenditure is also up with grounds and uniforms the main increases. Other costs are consistent with the previous year although there are some variations. Pavilion running costs charged by Shirley Sports Club Ltd (a related party) have been included at the same level as last year. The majority of this is outstanding and showing as a liability. As mentioned in Note 10 to the accounts, we are seeking a review of the rental arrangement with Shirley Sports Club Ltd and have requested a waiver of rent for the last two years. At balance date this had not been finally resolved and the matter is still under discussion. This year unspent grants of $9500 have been carried forward and as a result the liquidity position remains weak.

Subscriptions and sundry income are up on 2013. A good effort by all concerned. Also a good fundraising event with the Xmas hampers. Thanks to Henk, Harry and others for their efforts.

The statement of financial position clearly sets out the situation at balance date. There are funds in the bank but current liabilities are in excess of this amount. A GST recovery is due, subject to payment of amounts owing, and inventories are down on last year. The special funds are now on term deposit with Westpac and earn a small amount of interest. Details are shown in the notes.

Overall, we have managed quite well in the 2014 year but we still need to obtain more income to cover our costs or we need to reduce expenditure. This is one of the reasons why we are seeking a review of the rent position. A surplus position is essential to maintain equity and cash flow. If losses continue we will eventually run out of money. This is something the incoming committee needs to address. It looks like another challenging year ahead.

The unaudited accounts of Shirley Sports Club Ltd are also included in the Annual Report. These include the rents for member clubs and show a surplus after depreciation.

In conclusion, our thanks to the gaming trusts and Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket Assn for their support as set out in the notes. Also Andy Innes of Cricket Express, Allan Stroud of O’Sheas and all others for their continued support and sponsorship. These are acknowledged in more detail elsewhere in the report. My thanks also to club members for their assistance during the year, particularly Harry Burson, Donn Leckie and Henk Stoffers for the work they do collecting subs and helping with other matters.

7 PAVILION REDEVELOPMENT & SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LIMITED

The Club entered into a Heads of Agreement and Joint Venture Agreement with the Shirley Rugby Football Club Inc. for the redevelopment of the existing pavilion in 2004. The project commenced in March 2005 and was completed in November 2005. Under the agreement, the pavilion is managed by the Shirley Sports Club Limited, a non-profit company established for this purpose. Each Club has equal shareholding and appoints three Directors. Under the agreement, “ownership” of the pavilion passed to the company at an agreed value and a notional gain on sale resulted. This was treated as an increase in member’s funds in the 2006 year. At balance date advances made by the Club to Shirley Sports Club Limited totalled $276,660 (last year $276,660).

SHIRLEY SPORTS CLUB LTD.

The main focus of the Board this year has been the Burwood Bowling Club Proposal. A "Potential Repair and Refurbishment Report" is currently being undertaken by Optimum Projects to provide the Board with the necessary information to decide on the viability of pursuing this project. We expect their report by the end of the month for tabling at our next Board meeting in October. Discussions with the Council re a transfer of the lease over the land are continuing but are slow due to a number of legal issues with a change in use.

We are also in discussions with both clubs on an acceptable level of annual rental to be paid to the Sports Club for their use of the facilities. We as a board are mindful of the fact that both clubs are struggling with their funding levels but with reduced bar takings and increasing costs these club rentals are essential in providing and maintaining our clubrooms

The only loan left outstanding is to the Christchurch City Council. The balance at 31st December 2013 was $10,000. We are paying back this loan at $10,000 per year. The next instalment of $5000 is due in August 2014.

My thanks go to my fellow Board members: Alan Albertson, John Grocott and Steve Barry from the Cricket Club and Deane Jordan and Steve Clark from the Rugby Club and Shona Milne our Secretary.
