Many of the individuals are no longer with us but my indebtedness to them and to the officers of the several organisations mentioned is acknowledged with gratitude and apologies for taking so long to do so. 3. Where conflicting dates have been found and remain unresolved these are shown and are subject to clarification. 4. “Believed to Be the Oldest Railway Lines in the World”!
“Believed to be the oldest railway lines in the world”! So was a claim I came across whilst thumbing through a book about my home county of Derbyshire. The claim obviously caught my attention and I read on. With hindsight, it would have been more accurate if the writer had written: ‘Believed to be the oldest railway lines still in situ’, nevertheless, on coming across this claim I knew I just had to investigate further and soon afterwards my wife and I took a ride out to what is known as High Peak Junction which can be found beside the Cromford Canal, near Matlock. Since looking further into this subject, I perhaps ought to point out that the railway lines concerned are more likely the second oldest lines in the world, but nevertheless are extremely interesting to anyone with an interest in the historical development of railways in Britain. Picture if you will, a very tranquil canal- side location surrounded by greenery, wild flowers and wildlife and you are some way to envisaging what we discovered once we had parked the car. Just a short walk from the car park you cross a foot bridge over the single track railway line from Matlock to Derby followed by another foot bridge across the Cromford Canal and before you stands High Peak Junction, a selection of classic railway buildings and signage. Today, in the 21st Century, the only sound to be heard is the passing traffic on the nearby A6 road which is just beyond the large dwelling which can be seen in the above photograph, a property which was at one time the home of the Superintendent of the junction. -

Experience a charming blend of breathtaking natural scenery, fascinating industrial heritage and pure spectacle and fun in the Derwent Valley. Designated a World Heritage Site in 2001, the Derwent Valley Mills have been described as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It was here in the Derwent Valley that the essential ingredients of factory production were successfully combined. Water power was applied and successfully used for the first time on a relatively large scale. Not only was textile production revolutionised with dramatic consequences for the British economy, but the Arkwright model informed and inspired other industries. Each mill has its own story to tell; stories of pioneering engineers and entrepreneurs who put Britain on the map and set off a chain of events that changed how we live and work forever. The mills and the industrial settlements around them, the churches, millponds, weirs and watercourses provide the perfect backdrop for a week full of discovery. Part 2, the High Peak Trail
A Jessop Trail The Cromford Canal and Cromford & High Peak Railway Part 2: High Peak Trail EXPLORE ENGINEERING Introduction The civil engineers William Jessop (1745-1814) and his son Josias (1781-1826) left their marks on the Derbyshire Peak District with a remarkable canal and railway, which fitted well into the landscape and can still be followed by anyone with a car or bicycle. This route is too long for walking in one day (if returning the same way), though there are car parks at both ends and along the route which provide options to explore shorter sections. Cycle hire facilities also exist at Middleton Top and Parsley Hay, though opening is seasonal. There are also several inclines (uphill from High Peak Junction to Parsley Hay, downhill if route followed in reverse); cyclists are advised to dismount when travelling downhill. Cromford & High Peak Railway (C&HPR) Before the Stockton & Darlington Railway was opened in 1825, a proposal was made to build a railway to connect William Jessop’s Cromford Canal with Benjamin Outram’s Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge, 33 miles to the north-west. It was designed by William’s son Josias. He died suddenly in 1826, just after construction work had begun, but the work was completed to his design and the railway was opened throughout in 1831. It was a standard-gauge railway, mostly double-tracked, but designed on canal principles, with long, almost level stretches connected by short, steep inclines. Starting from High Peak Junction on the Cromford Canal (at 278ft above sea level), the line rose via 5 inclines to a summit level of 1266ft, and then descended via 4 inclines to 517ft at Whaley Bridge.
