Este estudio podría servir para mostrarle a las compañías europeas que aún no tienen presencia en el país de las posibilidades de entrada que pueden tener, no solo en términos de la bonanza económica que vive el sector ahora mismo, sino también de las posibles compañías que podrían ser atractivas para realizar alianzas estratégicas de entrada. La elección de este tema viene marcada por varias vertientes. Primero, el mercado de los seguros es un sector que, lamentablemente, no es objeto de estudio, por norma general, de los grados universitarios de Administración y Dirección de Empresas que, en términos financieros, se centran, en mayor medida, en el análisis de instituciones financieras que basan su actividad en proporcionar financiación, por lo tanto, hay un gran desconocimiento del funcionamiento de este sector en los recién graduados. Segundo, he tenido la oportunidad de realizar unas prácticas en una de las empresas aseguradoras más importantes del mercado europeo, lo que ha hecho que pueda enriquecer mis conocimientos sobre el sector, así como atraer mi interés sobre éste. Por último, la elección de Arabia Saudí se debe a que es uno de los países con mayores restricciones del mundo debido a la monarquía autoritaria y a la religión musulmana, sin embargo, es una región que parece que poco a poco va progresando y abriéndose más al mundo occidental. Además, solo dos de las principales compañías aseguradoras europeas tienen presencia en este país. La metodología llevada a cabo a lo largo de este informe ha sido, principalmente, la obtención de datos, tanto macroeconómicos como sectoriales, de fuentes especializadas en estos aspectos para poder proceder a su posterior análisis. Las bases de datos más utilizadas han sido World Bank (Banco Mundial), International Monetary Fund (Fondo Monetario Internacional) en cuanto a macroeconomía se refiere y, Sigma Explorer y Tadawul para datos sectoriales. Para favorecer el entendimiento de las cifras descritas, se ha aportado, en la medida de lo posible, gráficos que representan la 4 trayectoria histórica y/o futura de éstos, respaldos con informes llevados a cabo por agencias independientes locales de Arabia Saudí, así como de la agencia monetaria de Arabia Saudí (Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, SAMA). Este trabajo se estructura en tres grandes áreas. En primer lugar, se analizará la situación macroeconómica del país y la valoración crediticia que le atribuyen las tres agencias de rating más importantes del mundo, haciendo especial hincapié en el sector petrolífero debido a la gran importancia de éste. En segundo lugar, se pasará al tema objeto de este informe, el sector de los seguros. En este aspecto, se presentarán las normas regulatorias que toda empresa extranjera debe cumplir, se estudiará la evolución histórica de las principales partidas del sector y finalmente se hará una comparación con otros países. Por último, se analizarán las empresas del sector siguiendo dos objetivos: primero, conocer el estado de las compañías más grandes del sector y, segundo, las compañías con poco capital extranjero que podrían ser atractivas para realizar alianzas estratégicas. Todo ellos nos llevará a terminar con las principales conclusiones extraídas de este estudio. 1. ARABIA SAUDÍ Arabia Saudí es un país situado en Oriente Medio, más concretamente en la península arábiga. Es un país soberano que tiene instaurada la monarquía absoluta como forma de gobierno, en la que la familia real, una de las familias más ricas del mundo con una fortuna que alcanza 1,4 billones de dólares, concentra toda la autoridad, teniendo el poder legislativo, ejecutivo y judicial. La única limitación que tiene el rey es la ley Sharia y el Corán, leyes propias de la religión musulmana (Al-Rasheed, 2002). Arabia Saudí también es conocida como la tierra de las mezquitas sagradas ya que entre sus monumentos se encuentra la Gran Mezquita en La Meca y la Mezquita del Profeta en Medina, los dos lugares más sagrados del islam, con grandes índices de peregrinación y en los cuales está estrictamente prohibido la entrada a personas que no pertenezcan a esta religión (Al-Rasheed, 2002). 5 La capital, Riyadh, es la ciudad más poblada de la región, contando con más de 6 millones de habitantes y es la ciudad en la que se basa la mayor parte de la industria. La economía del país sustenta todas sus bases en la industria del petróleo, en la que no solamente es el mayor productor del mundo, sino también el centro del comercio mundial (Al- Rasheed, 2002). 1.1. Situación macroeconómica En forma de resumen general de la situación en la que se encuentra Arabia Saudí, así como para presentar veracidad de los datos que se irán presentando a lo largo de este informe y garantizar la estabilidad económica del país, es adecuado informar sobre el rating crediticio atribuido a esta región por las tres principales agencias de calificación del mundo, Standard and Poor’s, Fitch y Moody’s (Salvador, 2013). Coincidiendo la opinión de las tres agencias, Arabia Saudí ha empeorado sus calificaciones en los últimos años a pesar de permanecer en un estado de poco riesgo y positivo para la inversión. Fitch, siendo la calificación más reciente de noviembre de 2017, le otorga la nota de A+ con perspectivas de mantenerse estable. Moody’s,
