PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn DALLAS COWBOYS Team History In 1960, the Dallas Cowboys became the NFL’s first successful new team since the collapse of the All- America Football Conference 10 years earlier. Clint Murchison Jr. was the new team’s majority owner and his first order of business was to hire Tex Schramm as general manager, Tom Landry as head coach and Gil Brandt as player personnel director. This trio was destined for almost unprecedented success in the pro football world but the “glory years” didn’t come easily. Playing in the storied Cotton Bowl, the 1960 Cowboys had to settle for one tie in 12 games and Dallas didn’t break even until its sixth season in 1965. But in 1966, the Cowboys began an NFL-record streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons. That streak included 18 years in the playoffs, 13 divisional championships, five trips to the Super Bowl and victories in Super Bowls VI and XII. Dallas won its first two divisional championships in 1966 and 1967 but lost to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL championship game each year. Similar playoff losses the next seasons were followed by a 16-13 last-second loss to Baltimore in Super Bowl V following the 1970 season. The Cowboys were typified as “a good team that couldn’t win the big games.” But they dispelled such thought for good the very next year with a 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys were Super Bowl-bound three more times from 1975 to 1978.

FOR USE AS DESIRED January 17, 2007 PRESS BOX NOTES – NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME COMPETITIVE PLAYOFFS: The 2006 playoffs through the first two rounds have been the most competitive si nce the NFL went to the 12-team format in 1990. The average margin of victory in the eight Wild Card and Divisional games was 7.3 points per game. That is the lowest point margin since 1990. The previous low was a 9.8-point average in 2003. Through the first four games of the National Football Conference playoffs, the average margin of victory has been 2.5 points per game -- with two games ending on game-winning field goals (NY Giants-Philadelphia Wild Card and Seattle- Chicago Divisional). If Sunday’s game between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears is decided by 14 points or less, it would surpass the 1970 NFC playoffs (5.0 average margin of victory) for the smallest margin in conference playoff history. A look at the lowest average margin of victory in NFC playoff games since 1970: SEASON GAMES AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY 1970 3 5.0 1979 4 7.0 1971 3 7.7 1998 5 8.2 2003 5 9.0 2006 4* 2.5 * One game remaining -- NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME -- NO. 1 VS. Sunday will be the 11th time that a conference championship game featured the top offense and defense in the conference. In the previous 10 games, the club with the best offense won seven times.

  • Visiting the Barry Switzer Center
VISITING THE BARRY SWITZER CENTER 28 SOONER MAGAZINE Dramatically displayed for all to see: the trophies, records, photos, videos and memorabilia. Everything you ever wanted to know about Sooner football history and tradition. The goal was to create something timeless, classic and traditional, something that would bring to life the rich history of Sooner football. And while it may have taken two attempts to get it right, the "new" Barry Switzer Center is a true representation of that distinguished legacy. The $1 million renovation project, completed in September 2004, was made possible by contributions from Oklahoma City businessmen Aubrey K. McClendon and Carl B. Anderson III, long-time supporters of the University of Oklahoma. The transformation focused mainly on the 6,000-square-foot Legends Lobby, initially dedicated in April 1999 to showcase the University of Oklahoma football program's heritage. According to OU director ofathletics Joe Castiglione, the original design did not meet the University's standards of excellence. And while plans for changes were in the works for some time, the execution of said changes was dependent on raising the funds needed to assemble a worthier tribute. "The first time around, there was only so much money left in the budget. And to be honest, we were never happy with the design," says Castiglione. "While it was better than nothing, it wasn't anywhere near a level that we believed properly celebrated the history and the people who forged that history." Castiglione explains that problems with the original design firm and the contractor had been addressed at the initial time of completion.
