Deadset Dream Profile The members of Deadset Dream broke free from the clutches of a mediocre life in 2013 when they preformed to a crowd of up to 70,000 at Leeds Party in the Park. Hailing from Sheffield, the band kick started their career and their fan base after winning a competition to play the opening slot at Party in the Park. I caught up with lead singer Shiney Lingwood over Skype to talk about their success and their plans for 2015. Dressed appropriately in Deadset Dream merchandise and sat in a dingy room with guitars laid against the walls, Shiney was definitely embracing the bands pop-punk style. Originally from Blackburn, Shiney began to miss his old music scene after moving to Sheffield and decided to post an ad on Join My Band. Tom Bland replied and after a jamming session, Deadset Dream had its lead singer and rhythm guitarist. The 5-piece band was fully formed in 2012 being described as a pop-punk machine made up of five committed lads with one common goal, to bring ‘energetic shows and catchy hooks to Yorkshire and surrounding areas’. Despite working in the mundane environment of Virgin Media Business, Shiney has bundles of talent. As well as being a singer-songwriter, he managed the bands merchandise and was an active part of their social media campaign until the introduction of the bands director Adam Dore in 2014. With such an energetic band it was important to have someone who could direct their energy down the correct paths. The influences of the band reflect the range of interests of its members from Jamie, who is partial to a bit of hardcore metal, to Shiney, who’s guilty pleasure is Take That. However there are still the ‘obvious influences’, says Shiney, such as Blink 182, You Me At Six and Bowling For Soup. Since they formed, the band has been working on creating their own sound and original, relatable music. Their first single Who Are You Again?, written by band member Shiney Lingwood and recorded in September 2012, is about betrayal, love and friendships – something everyone can relate to. He regards this as one of his favourite songs to sing, saying ‘come on, who doesn’t love hearing a room full of people singing a song that you wrote?’ And that’s just what he got two months later when the band played their first live show, despite having to do onstage adjustments to the set in front of the awaiting audience. However with the chemistry of the band

Cherry Pannell-Berry JRND01 20050188 flowing, the performance was a success and the cheering crowd was just a glimpse of what they were going to encounter in the following years. The true talent of the band became apparent in the ‘breakthrough’ year of 2013. With a few songs under their belts and a growing fan base, Deadset Dream entered a competition with Hallam FM. They fought against other bands in a fundraising battle to earn money for the children’s charity Cash4Kids and after raising nearly £6,000 in the first week alone they were crowned Hallam FM’s Big Audition Champions. Their reward was an instantly raised profile in and around the Sheffield area and ultimately playing the opening set of Leeds Party in the Park. Shiney describes this experience as ‘just wow, it was surreal listening to a good 50% of 70,000 people scream Who Are You Again? back at us! It was the most amazing feeling ever’. In the same year they played at the Plymouth festival Volksfest alongside The Levellers and Alabama 3 and were congratulated by the festival organisers for having one of the best performances of the weekend. Towards the end of 2013 they played the headlining spot of Burnley Oxjam Festival and were voted number 10 in the Best Bands of Oxjam 2013 out of the thousands who took part. After that successful year the band began to slow down, concentrating on growing their fan base whilst keeping those loyal to them happy with local gigs and some larger shows further afield. One fan, Georgina Hardy, certainly kept true to the band, ‘I first saw them at Party in the Park in 2013,’ she said ‘then I messaged them on Facebook and later got the chance to meet them all on the 24th of October. I had one of the best nights ever.’ After waking up one morning paralysed, Georgina was beginning to lose hope until she discovered the band, ‘they influenced me massively in a great way!’. She continued to be close to the band throughout 2014 and Shiney was there to watch her first steps without aid on the 2nd of August, ‘Shiney and his family saw me walking on my own with no help which was lovely’. It’s not clear what this year has in store for Deadset Dream yet but it’s looking confident. Band Director Adam Dore stated that ‘after a quiet 2014, the boys are ready for a big year with lots of new stuff to come, appearing across the UK in 2015’. What is certain is that we’ve not heard the last or the best of Deadset Dream. They’re already planning their future with Shiney saying ‘I’d give my pinkie to play a packed out Wembley Stadium, but there’s a long way go yet!’ With a little bit of faith and hard work they could follow in the footsteps of pop-punk superstars or newcomers 5 Seconds of Summer who have both played the venue or find the same success as the Sheffield bred Arctic Monkeys. Keep an eye out for Deadset Dream in the new year and with their single The Fall sure to be a hit those who see them with be treated to a high energy set with relatable lyrics and catchy choruses. Audience and publication: The publication that I am writing for here is Kerrang magazine. I chose this publication as the genre of the band fits with the style of the magazine. The audience would be people aged 13-25 who already buy the magazine or are already fans of similar bands such as You Me At Six/5 Seconds of Summer etc or the genre of pop- punk. The audience would also extend to pre-existing Deadset Dream fans who want to know more about their band or follow their progress already.
