    Veronica Arroyo English 112B Dr. Warner Spring 2015 Annotated Bibliography: Social Awareness through Literature Social issues transcend from generation to generation. Though social movements fighting for civil rights, women’s liberation/equality, and L.G.B.T. rights have made drastic steps towards a more inclusive community, much still needs to be done in order to bring about a more unity and tolerance. Growing up issues of race and gender inequalities were always present, but the discussions of these issues always seemed limited to one perspective or ruled by the notions of what is appropriate and inappropriate to address. While I was creating the reading list for my annotated bibliography, I decided to incorporate works of literature that throw you deep into social issues and allow you to explore the effects that they had during their respective time periods and how echoes of these issues are still present. In an attempt to bring social awareness and understanding to future generations I believe that it is vital to expose students to works of literature that bring to light various social issues, while still engaging them in the literature and encouraging them to reflect on how those issue are still present today. While I was compiling my ideal reading list that I would teach to my future high school students, I found myself leaning towards more traditional or canonical works of literature that I felt had a great impact on my sense of social awareness as a young adult. While these book can seem “dated” to today’s reader I feel that the themes and issues that they bring forth are still very relevant.

MADIHUR REHMAN DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2013 Abstract The first chapter of the thesis, "The Path to Doom: America from Idea to Reality;'" takes the journey of America from its conception as an idea to its reality. The country that came into existence as a colony of Great Britain and became a refuge of the exploited and the persecuted on one hand and of the outlaws on other hand, soon transformed into a giant machine of exploitation, persecution and lawlessness, it is surprising to see how the noble ideas of equality, liberty and democracy and pursuit of happiness degenerated into callous profiteering. Individuals insensitive to the needs and happiness of others and arrogance based on a sense of racial superiority even before they take root in the virgin soil of the Newfoundland. The effects cf this degenerate ideology are felt not only by the Non-White races within America and the less privileged countries of the third world, but even by the Whites within America. The concepts of equality, freedom, democracy and pursuit of happiness were manufactured and have been exploited by the American ruling class.The first one to experience the crawling effects of the Great American Dream were original inhabitants of America, the Red Indians and later Blacks who were uprooted from their home and hearth and taken to America as slaves.

Indeed, I had been teaching both Wise Blood and Of Mice and Men in an un- dergraduate course on the novella for a year or two before the possibility of a connection became clear, not with the story of Lennie and George but with the much more ambitious epic of the Joad family. Tom Joad’s return home from a stretch in prison for manslaughter is a memorable beginning for Steinbeck’s novel, starting with his angry response to a truck driver’s curiosity and ending as he stands in front of the Joad house, abandoned in the wake of the great dust storms of the Depression years in Okla- homa.

The paper first looks at how 9/11 changed the senior seminar by reversing the instructor/author's original plans to stress history over theme, and second, how he was able to use what he learned from the unexpected changes in the seminar to give new direction to an existing American Novel course. In him we can see the moods, if not the actual events of his time, most clearly reflected and its strongest drives most forcefully crystallized. The two basic impulses of the 1930s towards escape and toward social consciousness found their sharpest expression in the writing of John Steinbeck, whose work represents more faithfully than any of his contemporaries the temperament of an angry decade. Manikumar Lecturer in English., T.J.P.S.College, Guntur ABSTRACT John Steinbeck was a writer who created memorable stories and deeply cared about people, particularly the dispossessed and the persecuted. These people were the subject of his greatest novels. Steinbeck’s critics in the 1930s viewed him as an anti-capitalist and anti-industrialist because of his desire to document the horrid living conditions in the agricultural fields of California’s Central Valley, but, in reality, Steinbeck’s beliefs and attitudes were ambivalent when writing about the complex relationships that drove the social and economic life in the 1930s. This paper focuses on an aesthetic, philosophical influences, agricultural depression, rural sociology and sociopolitical perspective of John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath.
