HISTORY LESSON brought to you by Pioneers of Ethnic Diversity in the American Sea Services Trained at the Academy, they broke barriers while serving their country by William H. Thiesen, Ph.D., Atlantic Area Historian, USCG he United States Coast Guard has had Ta history of ethnic diversity that rivals most any other federal agency. African Americans have served in the United States Coast Guard over its entire 220- year history, but their participation in the service has been largely overlooked. So it is only fitting that we should document some of their contributions by starting at the Coast Guard Academy, which pioneered the role of African American officers in America’s sea services. The first African American officers in the service completed their training at the Academy; however, rather than enter as cadets, these men came through the Reserve Officer Training Course, forerunner of today’s Officer Candidate School (OCS). The first of these unique individuals was Joseph Charles Jenkins, who was born in Detroit in 1914. The SEA CLOUD ships follow a course of their own: On our three windjammers, the sails are still traditionally hoisted by hand – a tough job every time. Deftly, the sailors climb into the shrouds, release the heavy cloth, then vigorously tighten the ropes down. There are no buttons that can simply be pressed, and almost an hour goes by until all the sails catch the wind. Beneath the up to 4,100 square meters of sail cloth, old seafaring tradition, and relaxed cruising experience go hand in hand. Here, the sea is always almost within your reach – not a dozen decks away! Pampered by the attentive crew with their charming demeanor, a maximum of 136 guests can enjoy the private yacht atmosphere on board. A trip on a windjammer is so much more than just a cruise. In 2021, the three SEA CLOUDs again head for the most beautiful sailing areas in the world, with exciting and varied itineraries: The SEA CLOUD SPIRIT will spend the first winter of her premiere season cruising around the Canary Islands offering a wealth of activities on board and ashore. The 90-year-old SEA CLOUD and the 20-year-old SEA CLOUD II will each celebrate a significant birthday, and honor the occasion with special birthday trips.

PACIFIC CURRENTS NEWSLETTER “They Also Serve” VOLUME XX ISSUE IV 1 DECEMBER 2019 United States Coast Guard Retiree Council Northwest LT CROTTY, USCG, WWII POW OF THE JAPANESE Lieutenant Thomas James Eugene Crotty, USCG was laid to rest on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at : Holy Cross Cemetery, 2900 South Park Avenue, Lackawanna, New York LT Thomas Crotty was the only Coast Guardsman to serve in the Defense of the Philippines. Crotty was the first Coast Guard prisoner of war since the War of 1812 and one of four USCG POWs during WWII. Crotty served in four different military branches while deployed to the Philippines. Crotty managed and coached Buffalo's 1929 American Legion Junior National Baseball Championship team and he was class president during his time at the Coast Guard Academy. LT Crotty’s story has been lost and forgotten like the heroic sacrifices made by thousands of defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. Jimmy Crotty was a member of the long blue line and his brief life embodied the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty. LT Crotty was born on 18 March 1912, in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1934 after serving as Company Commander, class president and captain of the Academy’s football team. After graduation, Crotty began a promising Coast Guard career, which hardened him into a mature leader. For six years, he served on board cutters based out of New York, Seattle, Sault Ste. Marie and San Diego. His assignments included duty on cutter Tampa, during her 1934 rescue of passengers from the burning passenger liner Morro Castle; and, a Justice Department appointment as special deputy on the Bering Sea Patrol.
