44 • November 2014 - Haversat & Ewing Galleries The Worthington Collection

Thomas Chew Worthington III – This well known magician and magic collector was born February 13, 1887 and was one of the founders of the Demons Club and Society of Osiris Magicians in Baltimore. His interest was sparked by seeing, and then later meeting, Alexander Herrmann. However, it was Howard Thurston with whom he became obsessed. He and the Thurston family became very close friends and many rare and unusual items from the magician ended up in his collection.

Worthington had one of the largest and most valuable collections of rare magical apparatus in the world, which he eventually gave to the Ringling Brothers' Museum in Sarasota, Florida just prior to his death. That collection was poorly handled and later disposed of and rescued by magic collector Charlie Kalish, who in turn sold it to Ken Klosterman and the late David Price of the Egyptian Hall Museum. Worthington wrote a column for The Sphinx and was also the editor of Society of Osiris Magicians' magazine Tablets of Osiris. He died January 2, 1953 at the age of 70.

Not all of his collection ended up at the Ringling Museum however, and Haversat & Ewing have obtained one-of-a-kind effects from Worthington’s magic show. A rare opportunity to own a personal piece of equipment from one of magic's most important curators of all time.
