Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 School Year at SCWS! SCWS students and parents, Welcome to the 2020-21 school year. This year marks SCWS's 10th school year and we have a lot to celebrate, including the recent news of the Post and Courier's Free Times naming SCWS as the 2020 Best Charter School. SCWS also graduated a school record of 136 students in the class of 2020. Also, SCWS teacher, Dr. Josie White, was named the 2020 SC Public Charter School District teacher of the year this past spring. We are so excited about all of these accomplishments. With your help we can continue to make history during the 2020-21 school year. I would like to thank you for choosing to be a part of the SCWS family. We are so thrilled to have you at SCWS and to work with you throughout your high school career in achieving your highest potential as you work towards your future goals. A few tips for a successful start are: Have a designated spot to complete your work that is NOT in your bedroom. Create a schedule for when you will be completing your work each day. Check your school email, calendar, and student desk messages daily. Communicate with your teachers and counselor regularly with any questions or concerns you may have about courses, a specific lesson, or about life in general. Seniors must meet with their counselor during September or October. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend. Grade Level Meetings 9th Grade students: If you started high school this year or have between 0-5.5 total credits, you are considered a 9th grader. Please meet Mrs. Goff here on September 3rd at 11:30am. 11th Grade students: If you started high school in the 2018-2019 school year or have 12-17.5 total credits, you are considered an 11th grader. Please meet Mrs. Gilbert here on September 9th at 1:00 pm. 12th Grade students: Welcome to your senior year! If you started high school in the 2017-2018 school year or have 18+ credits including 3 math credits and 3 English credits you are classified as a 12th grader. If you can help answer that question you could win cash prizes from the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina. They are hosting a South Carolina High School Writing Contest for cash prizes and a publishing opportunity. The contest is open to SC high school juniors and seniors. The Senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Do you know of a high school senior that wants to go to college without any debt? Do you know of a high school junior that is potentially interested in a military career? The Senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC) is now accepting applications for the ROTC scholarship. AUGUST 2020 PAGE | 06 SCWS NEWS • A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER • AUGUST 2020 Testing Updates Meet the new School Testing Coordinator Hey everyone, I am Patrick Bowers, your new School Testing Coordinator. I am a native of South Carolina, born and raised in the small town of Chapin. I currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from South Carolina State University and a Master of Education in Instructional Technology from Coastal Carolina University. Before joining SCWS, I taught Special Education in Patrick Bowers 2020 - 2021 Richland One and Richland 2 school districts here in Columbia. Update on Testing If you are a returning student in your third year of high school or a newly enrolled third year student, please be sure to return your College Entrance Assessment form as soon as possible. Make sure you indicate whether you would like to take the SAT or ACT or neither. The form should have come from your counselor (newly enrolled), if not, please let me know. Also, please be mindful that for the SAT, you will have to travel to Columbia for the assessment. For the ACT, we will have locations set up in or near your city. If you are a second or third year student, you are able to take the PSAT assessment on October 14th. By taking this assessment, it allows you to potentially earn college scholarships. Please be mindful that you must travel to Columbia for the PSAT. Click here to sign up. Students who are enrolled in an EOC course should complete their course work and watch for updates about testing later this fall. If you were scheduled to take the WIN assessment last spring, it has been rescheduled for the Fall. More information will come soon. A T T E N T I O N S T U D E N T S ! Did you know that National Beta Club is "the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization" in the United States? Did you know that it has also been in existence for nearly a century? Beta Club is one of the most recognized high school clubs in the country, so it goes without saying that colleges and employers are impressed when they see it listed on a student's application. In order to qualify for Beta Club membership, students must: ·Have and maintain a 3.5 GPA ·Be in good academic standing ·Be in good attendance standing As a club, we meet monthly for meetings (through Google Hangouts), and students are responsible for completing at least 45 volunteer hours over the course of the school year in order to earn their 0.5 elective credit.

Project research concluded in December 2020.
