Royals vs. Mariners WINNING TRIP ENDS WITH A THUD--A once promising 5-1 road trip wound up a 5-4 journey as the The Royals and M’s meet for a second time this year, with Royals were ambushed in Baltimore, losing a 6-0 contest last night to cap a 3-game sweep by the Orioles...it’s Kansas City sweeping a 3-game visit to Seattle in early July, its the first 3-game slide since losing five in a row around the All-Star break with three in Dodger Stadium and first such sweep in Safeco since 2010...Kansas City leads the all- two at home to Texas...heading into Camden Yards with the best offense in the American League over a two- time series by a 227-209 margin, including a 123-98 advantage in Kauffman Stadium. week stretch, KC was held to just three runs in the brooming, capped with its first blanking since a 1-0 loss Date Site Score WP LP Att. to Texas here back on July 16...Jason Vargas fell to 13-5 on the season, allowing three runs on four hits with 7/3 @ Sea W, 3-1 Kennedy Moore 35,789 two walks and six strikeouts...all three runs scored in the second inning, the big blow a 2-run homer by Caleb 7/4 @ Sea W, 7-3 Duffy Hernandez 25,555 7/5 @ Sea W, 9-6 (10) Minor Pazos 15,157 Joseph...the O’s blew it open in the eighth with three off of Brandon Maurer...the offense, which sputtered 8/3 KC once it arrived in Baltimore, was held to five hits and went 0-for4 with runners in scoring position...due to 8/4 KC 8/5 KC Cleveland’s rainout in Boston, the Royals fell to 2 1/2 out in the division race while the Wild Card tightened 8/6 KC to a half-game advantage over Tampa Bay for the second slot, while remaining two back of the Yankees. NO “O” IN BALTIMRE--Kansas City arrived in Baltimore in the midst of a 14-game wave averaging 6.4 runs per game, totaling 89 tallies, while hitting an A.L. best .307 as a team, with 22 home runs and an 11-3 record...in the three games at Camden Yards, the Royals totaled only three runs on 15 hits, batting .161 as a unit and getting swept in the 3-game set...the sweep was just the fourth series loss in the last 17 sets played dating back to the first of June...the Royals have gone 11-4 with two splits in that span...despite the Baltimore brooming, Kansas City’s 33-21 record since June 1 is the second best mark in the Majors to the Dodgers’ off the charts 42-11 ledger. HOZ & DUFF EARN JULY HONORS--Kansas City’s Player and Pitcher of the Month for July were a pair of familiar faces with Eric Hosmer taking the player honors and Danny Duffy the hurler...Hosmer hit .379 (39-for-103) in July and ranked among the American League leaders with 39 hits (second), 22 runs (tied for second), a .434 on-base percentage (fourth), 21 RBI (tied for fourth) and a .379 batting average (fifth)...this is Hosmer’s 10th career Royals Player of the Month honor...Duffy led the Royals with three wins and 31 strikeouts in July...he worked at least 7.0 innings in three of his six starts and held opponents to two-or-fewer runs four times...this is Duffy’s fourth career Royals Pitcher of the Month award and third in the last two seasons, after earning the honor in June and July of 2016 THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer extended his current hitting streak to eight games with a single in last night’s loss...he has batted .441 (15-for-34) during this streak with a 1.060 OPS...a model of consistency, Hoz has not gone more than two games without a hit all year and has been hitless in two straight games only three times... he entered play on April 23 with a .185 average, but has upped that 137 points to his present .322 mark by hitting .348 (119-for-342) in the 89 games since with a .948 OPS, while the club has posted a 48-41 record...that .348 mark since April 23 is second in the Majors to Houston’s Jose Altuve (.372)...Hosmer has also lit it up on the road this year, hitting .338 (72-for-213), which is fourth best in the A.L. and sixth in the Majors. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, “Ace” will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
