Comparative Analysis: Nigel Godrich and Timbaland Michael Mission 105250 BAP210.1 Comparative Analysis of Two Producers Table of Contents INTRODUCTION! 1 NIGEL GODRICH! 1 TIMBALAND! 1 PRODUCTION TRAITS! 2 CREATIVE ACCIDENTS! 2 THE BEAT MAKER! 3 IN COMPARISON! 4 CONCLUSION! 6 BIBLIOGRAPHY! 7 Nigel Godrich and Timbaland INTRODUCTION The ambiguous role of a music producer continues to escape common definition, made the more difficult in today’s ever growing expanse of musical genres and styles. McKinnon (2006), writing for CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) gives us a broad working definition: “Music producers are like film directors. They supervise the recording process, and are responsible for its final result.” Over recent decades, two significant individuals have had a major impact in shaping this very role; English producer Nigel Godrich and American producer Timothy Zachary Mosley better known to the world as ‘Timbaland’. The following essay analyses and compares these two individuals with particular focus on their key stylistic traits, their approach and methodologies and the techniques they employ in the craft of music production. NIGEL GODRICH Born in February 28, 1971, Godrich is best known for his close collaboration with the English five piece rock band Radiohead. The noted partnership began with a chance opportunity to record some B-sides during the band’s studio sessions for The Bends, “a notoriously difficult album for the band to make” (Robinson, 1997). His immediate connection with the band and his thorough knowledge of tape machines, mixing consoles and outboard gear made him the first port of call during the pre-production stages for Ok Computer (1997), Radiohead’s third studio album.

  • Form in Popular Song, 1990-2009
FORM IN POPULAR SONG, 1990-2009 Jeffrey S. Ensign Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2015 APPROVED: Thomas Sovik, Major Professor Donna Emmanuel, Committee Member John Covach, Committee Member Frank Heidlberger, Chair of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Music James Scott, Dean of the College of Music Costas Tsatsoulis, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Ensign, Jeffrey S. Form in Popular Song, 1990-2009. Doctor of Philosophy (Music Theory), December 2015, 285 pp., 31 figures, 127 examples, bibliography, 92 titles. Through an examination of 402 songs that charted in the top 20 of the Billboard year-end charts between the years 1990 and 2009, this dissertation builds upon previous research in form of popular song by addressing the following questions: 1) How might formal sections be identified through melody, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation, and text? 2) How do these sections function and relate to one another and to the song as a whole? 3) How do these sections, and the resulting formal structures, relate to what has been described by previous theorists as normative? 4) What new norms and trends can be observed in popular song forms since 1990? Although many popular songs since 1990 do follow well-established forms, some songwriters and producers change and vary these forms. AAA strophic form, AABA form, Verse-Chorus form, Verse-Chorus with Prechorus and/or Postchorus sections, Verse-Chorus- Bridge form, “Other, with a Chorus” and “Other, without a Chorus” forms are addressed. An increasing number of the songs in each of the above listed forms are based on a repeating harmonic progression or no harmonic progression at all.

  • STEPHEN GRAHAM Justin Timberlake's Two-Part
STEPHEN GRAHAM Justin Timberlake’s Two-Part Complementary Forms: Groove, Extension, and Maturity in Twenty-First-Century Popular Music Throughout their short-lived but commercially lucrative career, which ran principally from “I Want You Back” in 1996 to the third and final album, 2001’s Celebrity, Justin Timberlake’s boyband NSYNC plowed a familiar late twentieth-century pop musical furrow.1 NSYNC flirted with the perceived authenticity of various black urban forms, from the balladry of groups such as Boys 2 Men to the swinging R&B of New Edition, while sticking closely to marketable “white” imagery all the same. This can be seen in the soft-focus, vocal-led acoustic balladry of audience- flattering songs such as “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You” (1998) and “This I Promise You” (2000), as much as it can on the more urgent and driving dance pop with echoes of New Jack Swing of “Tearin’ Up My Heart” (1997), “Bye Bye Bye” (2000), and “It’s Gonna Be Me” (2000).2 All of this music walks a fine line between, on the one hand, sexual danger and supposed credibility and, on the other, a carefully managed and canny “marketing of androgyny” similar to that discussed by Daryl Jamieson chiefly in relation to the Backstreet Boys, a group that shared early managers and an ethos with NSYNC.3 Complicating these sexual and racial codes in NSYNC’S work were various other influences, from a prevalence of propulsive, programmed sounds derived from recent Eurodance musics to more up-to-date bells and whistles from club and pop music of the time as sourced by leading writers and producers such as Kristian Lundin and Max Martin at Cheiron Productions in Sweden.
