McHaney ABSTRACT The college commencement address is traditionally regarded as the low point of an otherwise auspicious occasion. An ephemeral form of ceremonial oratory, the commencement speech is reviled for its conventional platitudes, its easy piety, and its abstractions on the well-lived life, the sunny future, and the ethics of adulthood. The South may differ, however, in its approach to the commencement speech genre, especially in the years between World War II and the millennium, when one of the South’s most significant assets became the southern writer. Throughout this dissertation, I have tried to situate eight commencement addresses given by such prominent and dissimilar writers as W.J. -

DOUGLAS * THE case studies of the fifteen hundred New Jersey and Boston banl-upts which were made during the last two years' throw *Visiting Professor of Law, Yale School of Law; co-author of Cases on the Law of Management of Business Units (1931), Cases and Materials on the Law of Financing of Business Units (1931) and Cases and Materials on Corporate Reorganization (1931). ' The author wishes to express his indebtedness to Dr. Dorothy S. Thomas and Miss Emma Corstvet for many helpful suggestions and criticisms re- garding the analysis of cases and presentation of data in this article. I The study in New Jersey, made from November, 1929-June, 19'0, cov- ered 597 of the 1275 petitions filed during the fiscal year ended June 00, 1930. The cases studied were taken from all parts of the District of New Jersey-rural as well as urban, small towns as well as larger cities and included approximately two-thirds of all those who filed their peti- tions during the period of the study. The study in Massachusetts in- cluded 910 of the 2900 (unofficial) petitions filed in the entire District of Massachusetts for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1931. No attempt was made to cover the entire state. Only cases arising in the metropolitan area of Boston, ie., the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, and Middlesex, were covered. About 70% of all those cases between October, 1930, and June, 1931, were taken. The study in New Jersey was carried on with the generous supervision and collaboration of Hon. -

ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LARGE PRINT Ancient Bells RESOUND of China Resound: Ancient Bells of China Bells were among the first metal objects created in China. Beginning over 3,500 years ago, small, primitive noisemakers grew into gongs and further evolved into sets of hand bells for playing melodies. Centuries of technological experimentation later resulted in sophisticated bells that produced two pitches when struck at different spots. Variations in size, shape, decoration, and sound also reveal regional differences across north and south China. By the late Bronze Age large sets of tuned bells were played in ensemble performances in both areas. Cast from bronze, these durable instruments preserve valuable hints about the character of early Chinese music. Today we can use technology to explore these ancient bells and to explain their acoustical properties, but we know little about the actual sound of this early music. To bring the bells to life, we commissioned three composers to create soundscapes using the recorded tones of a 2,500‐ year‐old bell set on display. Each of them also produced a video projection to interpret his composition with moving images that allow us to "see sound." Unless otherwise indicated, all of these objects are from China, are made of bronze, and were the gift of the Dr. Paul Singer Collection of Chinese Art of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution; a joint gift of the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, Paul Singer, the AMS Foundation for the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities, and the Children of Arthur M.
