The Ship 2014/2015
A more unusual focus in your magazine this College St Anne’s year: architecture and the engineering skills that make our modern buildings possible. The start of our new building made this an obvious choice, but from there we go on to look at engineering as a career and at the failures and University of Oxford follies of megaprojects around the world. Not that we are without the usual literary content, this year even wider in range and more honoured by awards than ever. And, as always, thanks to the generosity and skills of our contributors, St Anne’s College Record a variety of content and experience that we hope will entertain, inspire – and at times maybe shock you. My thanks to the many people who made this issue possible, in particular Kate Davy, without whose support it could not happen. Hope you enjoy it – and keep the ideas coming; we need 2014 – 2015 them! - Number 104 - The Ship Annual Publication of the St Anne’s Society 2014 – 2015 The Ship St Anne’s College 2014 – 2015 Woodstock Road Oxford OX2 6HS UK The Ship +44 (0) 1865 274800 [email protected] 2014 – 2015 www.st-annes.ox.ac.uk St Anne’s College St Anne’s College Alumnae log-in area Development Office Contacts: Lost alumnae Register for the log-in area of our website Over the years the College has lost touch (available at https://www.alumniweb.ox.ac. Inman, John (1935-2007) John Inman As Mr
Inman, John (1935-2007) John Inman as Mr. by Linda Rapp Humphries in Are You Being Served?. Undated BBC publicity photo. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2007 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Acclaimed comic actor John Inman gained international fame for his endearing portrayal of the fey salesman Mr. Humphries on the television series Are You Being Served?. He was also a perennial favorite on the pantomime circuit in Britain, specializing in traditional "dame" roles in which he appeared in drag. John Inman grew up in Lancashire in northwest England. His parents were hairdressers and owned several shops in Preston, where Inman was born on June 28, 1935. About a decade later the family moved to the seaside town of Blackpool, where they ran a boardinghouse. As a small child, Inman enjoyed making costumes and putting on little shows for his neighbors. As a schoolboy, he was an enthusiastic participant in plays. "I had a headmaster who was sensible. He knew that acting was what I was going to do with my life, so when the town's professional theater needed a boy and got in touch with the school, they got me," Inman recalled. With his stage debut at thirteen, Inman had found his calling. He quit school two years later and began doing whatever he could--"sweeping up, making tea, moving scenery"--at the theater. To support himself, Inman became a window-dresser at a menswear store in Blackpool. After two years, however, he moved to Britain's capital since "even the shows done in Blackpool were cast in London." He found another window-dressing job at a Regent Street store, but acting opportunities were scarce until a fellow employee, Kenneth Kendall (who later became well known as a newsreader on British television), invited him to join a touring company. -

He is probably best known for his work on the BBC TV children’s programme, Blue Peter , which he presented for ten and a half years from 1967 to 1978. As part of what is affectionately known as the “Dream Team” (together with Valerie Singleton and John Noakes) he appeared in more than 850 episodes of what has become the longest continuously running children’s TV programme of all-time. His career began in the theatre, in what was known as weekly rep., with the Renaissance Theatre Company, at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Barrow-in-Furness. It was a time he remembers with great affection, as the best training, the worst paid, the hardest work and the happiest two working years he has ever known. From the early 1960’s he appeared in many of the then current and popular television series for both the BBC and ITV, and in 1965 he joined the original Doctor Who , William Hartnell for a year as his sidekick in the still popular series. He occasionally attends the conventions held around the world for the show’s aficionados. -

LINGUA FRANCA by Peter Nichols
Press Information 1980-2010 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FINBOROUGH THEATRE Summer Season 2010 Cherub Company London in association with Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre presents The World Premiere of a new play by Peter Nichols LINGUA FRANCA by Peter Nichols. Directed by Michael Gieleta. Designed by James Macnamara. Cast: Enzo Cilenti. Ian Gelder. Rula Lenska. Abigail McKern. Chris New. Charlotte Randle. Natalie Walter. “We must learn to be Europeans. Forgive and forget is our only hope” The Cherub Company returns to the Finborough Theatre with the world premiere of a brand new play by Peter Nichols, Lingua Franca, opening Tuesday, 13 July 2010 (Press Night: Friday, 16 July 2010 to Sunday, 18 July 2010) as part of the Finborough Theatre’s 30th anniversary year. Lingua Franca follows innocent abroad, Steven Flowers, as he travels from National Service in South-East Asia to 1950’s Florence. He soon finds himself working for a chaotically-run language school, together with a cosmopolitan muddle of seven foreign misfits killing their post-war nihilism in the cafés of Florence, the cradle of Renaissance high culture. Based around a leading character in Peter Nichols’ acclaimed work Privates on Parade, and inspired by his own experiences, Lingua Franca is a fast-paced, sexually-charged story, and both a damning indictment and a celebration of sexual freedom. Playing with notions of xenophobia and deep-seated cultural stereotypes, nationalist foibles and prejudices clash and sparkle to high comic effect as Steven tries to make sense of his own life and a Europe at peace after so many years of war. -
