His father was Catholic, his mother Protestant, and the religious differences their relationship represented played themselves out almost daily, not in the Hewson household, but in the violence erupting nearby in Northern Ireland. When he reached school age, Bono adjusted well to the new routine of attending school, receiving high marks from his teachers and making many friends. Things changed when he reached St. Patrick's secondary scho ol, however. ono is married to Alison Hewson (nee Alison Stewart). THE EDGE Edge was born in Barking, Essex in 1961. When he was 2 he and his family mo ved to Dublin. He was brought up there and over the years became a musician. He learned how to play the guitar and the piano. • U2, N by Douglas K. Blount There Is but One Truly
RATTLE & FILM: U2, NIETZSCHE AND SALVATION IN THE BLUES by Douglas K. Blount There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy. —Albert Camus1 In this essay I will discuss two radically different answers to Camus’s fundamental question. Each of these answers, which find their motivation in what I shall call the blues of the human condition,2 maintains that life is indeed worth living. The first, put forward by the late nineteenth century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, infers from our wretchedness that God has died; surprisingly, though, Nietzsche finds in God’s death not an occasion for despair but rather an opportunity to make one’s life a thing beautiful by one’s own lights. Thus, in response to the blues, Nietzsche offers a requiem—that is, a dirge or funeral song—for God as a prelude to a reassessment of values. Such revaluing, he claims, makes possible a life worth living. The other answer to Camus’s question, put forward by a band of contemporary Irish theologians known as U2, sees our present darkness in the light of a kingdom yet to come, “a place that has to be believed to be seen.”3 On their view, the wretchedness of this life must be seen against the backdrop of God’s grace and the hope of new life which that grace provides. In response to the blues, then, U2 offers gospel. Moreover, since their most perspicuous 1“The Myth of Sisyphus” in The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays, trans.

  • INTRODUCTION to the STUDY Narrative Beginnings Throughout
1 CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY Narrative Beginnings Throughout my adult life, I have been fascinated with museums and other places of informal learning, such as zoological parks, botanical gardens, science centers,1 and art galleries. Although museums have played a significant role in my adult life, I cannot put my finger on what it was that sparked my interest in museums. I have only one childhood memory of visiting a museum. It occurred when I was five or six years old, when my family accompanied another family to the Museum of Science and Industry—a very large museum located in Chicago, Illinois, a two-hour drive from our home. The strongest memory I have of my day at the museum was picking up a telephone and speaking with Mickey Mouse. At the time, I believed it was the real Mickey on the other end of the phone. I also remember walking through a huge model of a human heart and hearing the loud thump-thump, thump-thump. The only other memories I have of the day relate to where we ate after the museum visit—at a place called the Pickle Barrel. I do not recall what sense I made of that experience back then, whether I understood what a museum was, or what I was supposed to take away from the visit. It is difficult to say what, if any, impact that museum experience had on me. I do not have any other memories of visiting a museum as a child—not even of going on school field trips to museums.

Barry Devlin Oppenheimer’s Bathtub artillerybrand.com artillerybrand.com Barry Devlin From the mid 80s till the mid 90s, I was lucky enough to be sort of house documentarian for the U2 circus. Four of us, Ned O’Hanlon, Maurice Linnane, the Great Declan Quinn and the Less Great me, wobbled around in a variety of vans chronicling the adventures of the Fab Four, from The Unforgettable Fire in Slane and America, through The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum to Achtung Baby and Zoo TV – that last, the greatest show ever to go on the road. To say that it was a gas would be to get nowhere near the true gas-ness of it. The U2 bits were revelatory – and very hard work. The show was so good that expectations of what our little band would deliver were – rightly – high and there was the occasional bollocking and at least one shelved piece. But there were also randomly zany moments like the time when I was asked to go out to LA on some business connected with The Making Of Rattle And Hum (not Rattle And Hum itself, that was Phil Joanou’s baby) and when I said I couldn’t take the time off – I couldn’t, Declan Hogan had me chained to the desk working on a Bord Fáilte campaign – Paul McGuinness, for it was he, said I could go as far as New York on Concorde, and slum the rest of the way on American. So I pleaded with Declan and went supersonic over the Scilly Isles.
