Major Cultural and Religious Holidays 2019/20 School Year

Recommended accommodation for observing students: please provide makeup days for tests, extra time to study and complete homework, and excuse students for missing practices and sports events. On fasting days, it would be ideal not to offer food in the classroom.

Most families who observe these traditions prefer their children to miss as little school as possible. For this reason, children may come to school while observing these holy days, or miss only the first day of some of these religiously significant feasts.

Eid al Adha+*: Sat 8/10/19 Muslim holiday celebrating Prophet Abraham’s faith, and marking the end of the of pilgrimage (). Starts the evening before with the sighting of the moon. Families and communities feast together, share food with the needy, and children receive .

Janmashtami: Sat 8/24/19 Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna. Devotees fast and hold a night vigil, then celebrate the following day with feasts, sweets and gifts for children.

10th of Muharram/+: Tues 9/10/19 Muslim day of fasting commemorating the parting of the Red Sea and Israelite escape from Egypt. For Shi’a Muslims, this is the culmination of ten days of mourning for the martyrdom of Hussayn, grandson of the prophet .

Rosh Hashanah*: First day, Mon 9/30/19 Jewish New Year, celebrating the creation of the world. Marks the beginning of the High Holy Days, a ten-day period of repentance and introspection.

Yom Kippur*: Wed 10/9/19 Jewish Day of Atonement; holiest day of the year. Observed with fasting and intensive prayer.

Indigenous Peoples Day: Mon 10/14/19 A day to honor the first peoples of America, to open up a dialog of mutual respect between Tribal Nations and surrounding communities, and to truthfully examine our shared history. Several communities across Maine and the now observe this holiday.

Diwali+: First day, Sun 10/27/19 Hindu Festival of lights. Celebrations can extend over several days, and involve -giving, decorations of lights, and feasts.

Christmas*: Wed 12/25/19 Western Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Eastern Orthodox Christmas: Mon 1/7/20 Most Orthodox traditions celebrate Christmas on the day after , according to the Julian calendar. American Armenian Christians celebrate Christmas on Epiphany. : Sat 1/25/20 Spring festival celebrated in East Asian Daoist, Buddhist and Confucian traditions, marking the turn of the .

Ash Wednesday: Wed 2/26/19 Day of repentance and fasting for some Christians, marking the start of the 40-day period of Lent, which concludes with and Easter.

Holi: Tues 3/10/20 Hindu spring festival, or festival of colors. Celebrations begin the evening before and last through the day.

Passover*: Thurs 4/9-4/16/20 Jewish festival commemorating the liberation from slavery in Egypt. Special foods are eaten, such as matzah instead of leavened bread. Students might stay home the first day of Passover. Relatives who have died are remembered in a service on the last day of Passover.

Good Friday: Fri 4/10/20 Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion and of Jesus. Many Christians, especially Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox, may fast on this day.

Easter: Sun 4/12/20 Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

Eastern Orthodox Easter: Sun 4/19/20 Julian calendar date of Easter.

Ramadan*+: Fri 4/24-5/23/20 Month of fasting and reflection. Muslims generally refrain from food and water from sunrise to sunset, and pray at regular intervals from early morning to late at night, all the while keeping up regular daily activities as best they can. Iftar gatherings take place after sunset to break the daily fast. (Children are exempt from fasting, but teenagers may fast).

Buddha Day/Vesak+: Thurs 5/7/20 Celebration of the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Date may vary by tradition (some Buddhist countries mark this day in April). Celebrations may last two days, and involve decorations with lights, singing, visiting, gift-giving, and .

Eid al Fitr*+: Wed 5/24/20 Holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan; begins the evening before with the sighting of the moon. Celebrations may extend over a period of a few days, with family and community gatherings, exchange of gifts, and donations to charity.
