The originality of this overview of Marx’s ideas and life lay in Yoshimoto’s stress on the young Marx’s theory of alienation as an outgrowth of a unique philosophy of nature, whose roots went back to the latter’s doctoral dissertation. It echoed Yoshimoto’s own reformulation of “alienation” (and Marx’s labor theory of value) as key concept in his theory of literary language (What is Beauty in Language), which he had just completed in 1965, and extended his argument -- ongoing from the mid-1950s -- with Japanese Marxism over questions of literature, politics, and culture. His extraction of the theme of “communal illusion” from the early Marx foregrounds his second major theoretical work of the decade, Communal Illusion, which he started to serialize in 1966 and completed in 1968, and outlines an important theoretical closure to the existential, political, and intellectual struggles he had waged since the end of the ii Pacific War. -

One issue caught in this controversy and mired in confusion the presence of evaluative language in Marx’s ‘later’ works. Critics have seized on its presence, contending that it contradicts his theory of history, rendering his critique of political economy nothing more than proletarian ideology. These criticisms are based on an inconsistency that is only apparent. As this dissertation will demonstrate, Marx is able to consistently and objectively combine evaluation and description in his ‘later’ works because embedded within his dialectical method is an ethic of self-actualization I call Dialectical Humanism. Since so much of the confusion surrounding this issue stems from a failure to adequately contextualize it, Chapter I places Marx’s life and thought in proper perspective. With the overview of the development of Marx’s life and thought complete, Chapter II examines his theory of history to understand how it explains socio-historical phenomena. Chapter III elucidates Marx’s humanism, tracing its development from an explicit to an implicit aspect of his thought. -

Brno 2018 The Power of Negativity: A Philosophical Study of the Hegelian Heritage in Philosophy Saman Pushpakumara Abstract The content of this thesis represents a selection of some of the most prominent Hegelian and anti- Hegelian philosophers of the 19th and 20th century, which starts with Hegel himself and then proceeds historically from Feuerbach and Marx via Adorno and Heidegger to the French metaphysical tradition, to British Idealism and via Russell’s and Moore’s analytic philosophy to the current American post- analytic and neo-pragmatic philosophical tradition. While each of the seven chapters is complete in itself in the sense that it represents one facet of a much larger whole, it simultaneously forms a constituent part of it for a more complete understanding of, arguably, the most central issue of the whole Hegelian tradition which is Hegel’s meta-concept of absolute negativity as the self-generative principle for overcoming the Cartesian subject-object dualism and the establishment of a speculative science. While Hegel employed this meta-concept methodologically to develop his new phenomenological logic, he also used it as an epistemological and ontological category of thought in order to point out the limitations of Kant’s, and indeed, many of his predecessors’ unreflected presuppositions. Having identified this multipurpose-conceptual tool as the core of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Science of Logic, I have then examined whether post-Hegelian philosophers and traditions also understood and applied this powerful concept in the same way, or whether they have reduced it to different modes of negation for their own philosophical agendas. -

Signed:...................... Date:.......................... 2 Abstract This thesis addresses Guy Debord's theory of spectacle through its primary philosophical and theoretical influences. Through doing so it highlights the importance of his largely overlooked concerns with time and history, and interprets the theory on that basis. The theory of spectacle is shown to be not simply a critique of the mass media, as is often assumed, but rather an account of a relationship with history; or more specifically, an alienated relation to the construction of history. This approach thus offers a means of addressing Debord’s Hegelian Marxism. The thesis connects the latter to Debord’s interests in strategy, chance and play by way of its existential elements, and uses these themes to investigate his own and the Situationist International’s (S.I.) concerns with praxis, political action and organisation. Addressing Debord and the S.I.’s work in this way also highlights the shortcomings of the theory of spectacle. The theory is based upon the separation of an acting subject from his or her own actions, and in viewing capitalist society under this rubric it tends towards replacing Marx's presentation of capital as an antagonistic social relation with an abstract opposition between an alienated consciousness and a homogenised world. Yet whilst the theory itself may be problematic, the conceptions of time, history and subjectivity that inform it may be of greater interest. -

MARX’S ENGAGEMENT WITH RELIGION Religion is one of the issues on which the Marxian corpus – the writings authored or coauthored by Karl Marx himself – is deficient. Although there are plenty of references to religion in Marx’s oeuvre, his most quoted statements on the topic belong to the initial transitional phase in his intellectual trajectory during which his break with the Young Hegelians unfolded. Thus, there is no Marxian theory of religion – a theoretical lacuna that contributed to the fact that, to this day, there is no reference work or body of work that can be regarded as providing a comprehensive Marxist theory of religion.1 The major reason for that, of course, is the high complexity of religion compared to plainly political ideologies. The theoretical tools developed by Marx cannot account alone for the multidimensional aspect of the question. Historical materialism is a necessary but insufficient explanans of religion, a topic that requires the input of all major human sciences such as anthropology, sociology or psychoanalysis. Moreover, Marx wrote quite less than Friedrich Engels about religion, probably because of a more limited interest in the topic determined by the limits of his personal religious experience compared to his friend’s. -

Selected Soteriological Threads of Alienation Criticism of Religion1 Jowita Guja AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The article concerns a few soteriological threads of alienation criticism of religion whose feature is the creation of a new autonomous and transgressive subject. It focused on the presentation of this subject using Nietzsche’s philosophy perceived within Freudian perspective. Keywords: atheism, soteriology, alienation, sublimation, repression. 1. Introduction Speaking about soteriology in the area of atheistic philosophy may seem disputable as a term “salvation” is typically reserved for religious traditions. Contrary to this trend, I am proposing a thesis that salvation of a man can have a completely secular meaning. Literally, it can be understood as liberation from a negative state or negative circumstances. That is the comprehension found within the Old Testament and in the Judaic tradition. In Christianity, in turn, salvation has several meanings, out of which restoration of lost inner oneness or completeness to a human being seems to be the most important. We deal with such a perception of salvation in, among others, the Letter to the Romans by St. Paul, within which a split of man into an old (outer) one and a new (inner) one is mentioned and discussed; the cleavage that is to be overcome in Christ. In atheistic philosophy, one can come across a certain analogy to both of these senses while simultaneous reversing the religious belief itself. -
