2005-06 SEASON IN REVIEW or the TCU women’s tennis team, the 2005-06 season was filled with many historical milestones. The Frogs finished the Fseason ranked 15th in the nation in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, which ties the highest finish since the 1979-80 season. The program made history when it became the first TCU women’s program to host the opening rounds of the NCAAs. The NCAA home-court advantage for the Frogs coupled with the 11 match win-streak they were riding, helped TCU topple nationally-ranked Texas to advance in the Championship and make their first-ever Sweet 16 appearance. All indications from the outset proved the Frogs would have a strong year as the team earned a preseason ranking of No. 14 according to the ITA poll. The preseason ranking tied a school record that was initially set in April of 1982 and later equaled in February 2005. Four Frogs were ranked in the top 50 in singles, setting a school record and one doubles tandem was placed in the top 50 as well. TCU notched their first big win of the season by knocking off seventh-ranked Vanderbilt, 4-3, at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors. Beating the Commodores tied a TCU school record for highest ranked team defeated. It was set in the 2004-05 season with a win over Clemson. After their run at the National Team Indoors, the Frogs catapulted four spots in the polls to claim the No. 12 ranking which was the highest ranking in program history.

DIVISION I WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 4 All-Time Team Results 11 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Stanford wins second title in four years: Doubles point deficits. Gutsy individual efforts. Three-set clinchers. Heart-stopping comebacks. “Upsets” of higher seeds. At the end of the day, was anyone really surprised? Definitely not No. 15 Stanford, which once again made a mockery of the bracket en route to claiming its 18th NCAA championship, transforming a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 victory over No. 12 Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon in steamy Tulsa, Oklahoma. It does feel a little odd for 19-time national champion Stanford (18 NCAA, 1 AIAW), long regarded as the gold standard in women’s college tennis, to be celebrating such success as an underdog. But, really, how can it not? Entering the postseason two weeks ago as a No. 15 seed despite winning the Pac-12 and knocking off the likes of Florida and Cal in the regular season, Stanford (20-5, 9-1 Pac-12) just ripped through a postseason gauntlet of high seeds in No. 2 Florida, No. 10 Michigan, No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 12 Oklahoma State. Hoisting the hardware for the first time since 2013, Stanford has now won 14 of its last 16 NCAA matches when seeded lower than its opponent, a streak that covers six years. That includes winning it all as a No. 12 seed three years ago – at the time the lowest-seeded team to accomplish the feat – and taking home the crown in 2010 as a No.

Tennis DIVISION I WOMEN’S Highlights Florida grinds out title victory in rematch after fi ghting back from 3-1 defi cit: Florida’s Lauren Embree knew better than to try and hit with Stanford’s Mallory Burdette, so she just kept playing a steady volley game. Embree survived a grueling third-set tiebreaker to beat Burdette 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6) and clinch the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship title for Florida May 24 at Stanford. Florida turned the tables on Stanford, after the Cardinal edged the Gators by an identical 4-3 score in the 2010 championship match. “Mallory hits the ball so hard I knew I couldn’t hit with her,” Embree said. “I had to grind it out. I just wanted to fi ght as long as I could.” “I had my game plan and I executed it pretty well for the most part,” Burdette said. “I’m proud of the way I played. It just came down to two points and I came up short.” Hilary Barte gave Stanford (28-1) its fi rst point at No. 1 singles, beating Allie Will 6-2, 6-4. Nicole Gibbs gave the Cardinal the lead 2-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Sofi e Oyen at No. 3 singles. Stacey Tan recovered from a fi rst-set loss to beat Joanna Mather 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and give Stanford a 3-1 edge, but Alex Cercone returned the favor at No. 5 singles, beating Veronica Li 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 as Florida (31-1) closed to within 3-2.
