SLEEPING CHILDREN POLICY AND PROCEDURE

As the lowest age we are registered for is two years, and they only attend for two hours, maximum, they will not normally need a sleep whilst they are in our care. However, as the two years olds attend the afternoon session, they very often miss their afternoon nap, and sometimes fall asleep during the journey to pre-school. Occasionally children fall asleep during the session if they are not well. We offer a child a place as soon as they are two, if a parent feels their child is not ready because they have an afternoon sleep, they can delay the start and be put back on the waiting list.

 If the child comes in asleep, consult with parents/carers as to what they would like to do about waking the child.  If the child falls asleep during the session – parents must be rung immediately as child could be ill.  Lay child on bean bags with a clean sheet in a quiet corner of the room  Launder sheet directly after use.  Child must be in the same room as the group with the adults at all times  If the group needs to leave the room, the child must be woken gently by their key person  The child must be allowed to take their time to waken fully before joining in the activities at their own pace. A suitable activity will be offered by the key person, ie a story.  Children will be offered a drink of water on awakening  Key person will inform parent when they come to collect the child about how long child slept for  If we have to evacuate in an emergency, that child’s key person will be responsible for ensuring the sleeping child is carried out to safety.

. Children may rest or sleep in their own pushchairs monitored By staff if they wish.
