Forte Design Systems Names Mike Arai General Manager of Japan Office Forte Design Systems appointed Masayuki (Mike) Arai to the position of president and general manager of Forte Design Systems KK in Yokohama, Japan. Most recently, Arai was general manager of Synfora in Japan and, previously, president of Synplicity KK, both acquired by Synopsys. Prior experiences include executive-management positions at Mentor Graphics Japan, Compass Japan, and Sumitomo Corp. ======Atrenta Appoints Bert Clement Chief Financial Officer Atrenta Inc. named Bert Clement chief financial officer. Clement’s experience in financial management spans more than 25 years at both private and public companies. He has successfully implemented financing for venture-backed companies and has extensive experience with large and small merger/acquisition transactions. Prior to Atrenta, Clement was senior vice president and CFO for VeriSign. He holds a bachelor of accountancy degree from George Washington University and is a certified public accountant. Shuler, a veteran of the semiconductor and IP industries, has extensive experience marketing to hardware and software engineers and executives. Prior to working in high technology, he flew as an air commando in the US Air Force Special Operations Forces. Shuler earned a BS in aeronautical engineering from the US Air Force Academy and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has over 35 years of semiconductor experience in the areas of marketing and sales, strategic planning, product line design, and general management. Young co-founded three technology companies including Exel Microelectronics, Corsair Microsystems, and Hyundai Electronics’ Flash-memory division. He has a BSEE from Pratt Institute. ======Dr. Rainer Knippelmeyer Is New VP R&D for SUSS MicroTec SUSS MicroTec appointed Dr. Rainer Knippelmeyer as Vice President R&D and CTO. In this function, Knippelmeyer will oversee research and development and innovation management for all products. His main focus will be on the creation of a cross-product technology roadmap within the SUSS MicroTec group. Knippelmeyer has many years of experience in research and development from his employment at various Carl Zeiss AG companies. ======

Pat Pistilli Receives Phil Kaufman Award from EDA Consortium, IEEE Council on EDA Pasquale (Pat) O. Pistilli, chairman of MP Associates of Louisville, Colo., received this year’s Phil Kaufman Award for pioneering the electronic design automation (EDA) industry and building the Design Automation Conference as its premiere showcase and networking platform. As a young engineer at Bell Labs, Pistilli started the Society to Help Avoid Redundant Effort (SHARE) Design Automation Workshop in 1964 as a way of networking and exchanging ideas about techniques for better automating electronics design. The first SHARE Workshop on Design Automation led to DAC and the focal point for the commercialization of EDA software and hardware. As Ellen Yoffa, director of information and interaction at IBM Research, notes, “… Pat Pistilli has touched the lives of many hundreds of people, ranging from high school students to the industry’s most powerful CEOs, and has influenced the careers of many thousands more.” (Pat Pistilli.jpg) ======IEEE Council on EDA Honors Luca Daniel with Early Career Award Luca Daniel, Emanuel E. Landsman associate professor of electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Early Career Award from the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA). Daniel was recognized for his contribution to electromagnetic-field analysis, parasitic variation- aware extraction, and automated parameterized linear and nonlinear stable model reduction. He received the Laurea degree summa cum laude in electronic engineering from the Universita’ di Padova in Italy in 1996 and his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003. Shishpal Rawat (shown in photo), the director of business enabling programs with the design technology solutions group, Intel, was elected chair. Dennis Brophy, director of strategic business development, Mentor Graphics, was re-elected vice-chair. Stan Krolikoski, group director, standards and interoperability, Cadence Design Systems, and Yatin Trivedi, director, standards and interoperability programs, Synopsys, were re-elected secretary and treasurer, respectively. Shishpal Rawat holds MS and PhD degrees in computer science from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, and a B. Tech. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. (crop_1.png) ======XMOS Appoints Terry Leeder as President and CEO XMOS named industry veteran Terry Leeder as CEO, bringing 37 years of semiconductor sales and global leadership experience. He has held CEO positions at MediaPhy Corp. and Medianix Semiconductor as well as several senior vice president, vice president, and business unit manager positions. He holds a bachelor of science (first class) degree from the University of Salford. ======Dr. Morris Chang Honored with Semiconductor Industry Pioneer Award The SoC Summit semiconductor industry conference announced that Dr. Morris Chang, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC), is the recipient of the event’s first annual Semiconductor Industry Pioneer Award. Citing the criteria for the award as an individual who recognizes and successfully leads in a compelling new direction, the SoC Summit adjudication panel--headed by Dr. Yervant Zorian, president of the IEEE Test Technology Technical Council, a fellow of the IEEE, and vice president and chief scientist at Virage Logic--cited Dr. Morris Chang as exemplifying that criterion. In 1987, after a career as a senior executive at Texas Instruments and president of General Instruments, Chang came to Taiwan to create an entirely new foundry business model for the semiconductor industry. ======Simon McLean Named NXP Vice President of Marketing for Standard Products NXP Semiconductors named Simon McLean vice president of marketing for the company's standard products business. McLean joins NXP with over 16 years of management experience within electronic components distribution and manufacturing. Having held leadership roles at TTI, ON Semiconductor, and Avnet, McLean understands NXP’s technology, markets, and the global semiconductor industry as well as both engineer and customer demands. ======Berkeley Design Automation Lands Stephen Meier as VP of Engineering Berkeley Design Automation Inc. announced that Stephen Meier has joined the company as vice president of engineering. A recognized EDA technology and management leader, Meier joins Berkeley Design Automation after more than 15 years at Synopsys Inc. Meier started his career at Intel, where he managed custom physical design tool development. He holds an MSEE from UC Berkeley and graduated summa cum laude with a BSEE from the University of Michigan. Meier also holds a patent in low-power design. ======Dr. I. C. Chen Joins UMC as Vice President United Microelectronics Corp. announced that Dr. Ih Chin Chen has joined the company as vice president of advanced technology development. Chen brings more than 20 years of experience in semiconductor technology research and development at major semiconductor companies in the U.S., mainland China, and Taiwan. He has published over 120 academic papers in professional journals worldwide and possesses 30 patents in various countries. Chen earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University and his master's and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. ======

Open-Silicon Promotes Taher Madraswala to VP of Engineering

Open-Silicon Inc. has appointed Taher Madraswala as vice president of engineering. His career accomplishments include more than 22 years of semiconductor engineering experience--12 of which were devoted to designing microprocessors for Intel Corp. To date, Madraswala has the distinction of being part of more than 150 tapeouts throughout his career. He earned a master's degree in computer engineering from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Aligarh University.

======Discera Names Sheung Li as Vice President of Marketing Discera Inc. has appointed Sheung Li as vice president of marketing. Li has a unique background in industry, government, and international affairs. He holds patents in low power and adaptive radio technologies. Li received a BS in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and both an MS in manufacturing systems engineering and an MBA from Stanford University. ======John Ennis Named Worldwide Sales VP for Altos Design Automation Altos Design Automation Inc. has added John Ennis as worldwide vice president of sales. Prior to joining Marvell, Li served as head of Qualcomm's Shanghai office and senior director of business development. He also previously served as technical deputy for Lucent Technologies and held research positions at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, IL, and Leiden University, The Netherlands. Li obtained a PhD in experimental physics from Leiden University in The Netherlands, a master of science degree from the Chinese Academy of Science, and a bachelor of science degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. After his successful chip-design career, Pollock moved into high-technology marketing. He has published numerous articles and was chairman of the EDAC Emerging Companies committee.
