Physician Assistant

Reports To: Surgeons/Medical Director

Qualifications & Education, Training and Experience:  Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program, Bachelor’s required.  Clinical training and/or experience as surgical assistant, plastic surgery preferred.  Licensed to practice as a physician assistant in the state of Oregon.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.  Continuing Medical Education required for maintaining position.  Maintains all proper physician assistant licensure and certifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Works with surgeon(s) and clinical staff to prioritize and organize daily tasks in response to changing demands.  Processes requests for information accurately, quickly, thoroughly and recognizes when it’s appropriate to refer to a physician.  Incorporates continuous quality improvement into practice.  Communicates effectively with staff, and able to work as a team to fulfill the organizational goals and objectives.  Demonstrates excellent technical skill as a surgical assistant.  Demonstrates problem solving skills and abilities.  Computer knowledge and skills required.

General Summary of Duties and Functions:  Assistant to surgeon(s) for major surgeries performed in both local hospitals and the on-site Wilshire Surgery Center.  Performs minor in office procedures such as lesion/mole removal. Performs dermal filler injections (Restylane or Juvéderm); BOTOX Cosmetic treatments; and Fraxel laser skin treatments.  Facilitates pre-operative appointments. The duties associated include: conducts pre-operation history and physical on patients, educates patients of surgical policies and procedures, communicates with surgery scheduling and ensures that all necessary authorizations and consents are signed. Verifies that all pre-operative pictures have been taken and that post-op appointments have been made. Works with administration to ensure the health information system accurately depicts our procedures.  Facilitates post-operative patient care and works closely with clinical team to ensure care.  Maintains continual communication with nursing staff and surgeons to ensure proper patient care.  Enters all patient charges for services provided by surgeon(s).  Rounds on patients admitted to local hospitals, administers discharge orders, and dictates discharge summaries on patients, as needed, at time of discharge.  Provides clinical backup to spa personnel.  Takes call through answering service by cell phone after hours and adequately records all interactions with patients.  Acts as liaison for relationship between business management and clinical team. Assists with decision making tools for management staff.  Attends educational meetings /seminars with surgeon(s), and educates nursing staff of new technologies and advances in plastic surgery.  Ensures that the clinic is compliant with OSHA regulations.  May administer clinical research projects.  Facilitates training of new clinical staff members.  Participates in weekly Patient Care meetings with clinical and business staff.  Ensures that all tasks and duties associated with surgery are complete and accurate.

Standards of Performance and Requirements:  Uniforms are provided as scrubs for all clinical based positions. Clinic days, staff is required to wear issued scrubs and name tag. If scrubs are not worn, appropriate professional attire, and lab jacket must be worn.  Actively supports and incorporates the practice’s mission and values. Treats all with respect.  Reports to work as scheduled, and on time. PTO requests are reviewed and approved by clinical team management.  Maintains all HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality relating to patients and employees.  Incorporates principles of safety and infection control in daily activities.  Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with fellow employees, and supervisors so that productivity and positive employee relations are maximized.  Works as a team member, and may train clinical staff on protocols.  Competent in the interpretation of patient behavior. Patient treatment should be individualized.  Understands that responsibility for patient care extends beyond the confines of the office.  Some travel is required in this position. Mileage reimbursement vouchers must be submitted in a timely manner to the business manager.  Maintains an adequate knowledge base while constantly adapting to change within an evolving healthcare environment.

Key Relationships:  Responsible for establishing positive and appropriate relationships with all customers of the Waldorf Center. This would include all employees, patients and their families.  Works closely with physicians, clinical staff, and business manager.  Reports ideas, solutions, and problems to the clinical management or business manager, as appropriate.
